Linwood Charter awaits BESE board vote transferring school charter to Third Future
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Louisiana Department of Education is recommending to the BESE Board that Third Future Schools based in Colorado take over the contract to run Linwood Public Charter School.
Since 2017, Linwood has been under a year-to-year management agreement with the state. Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley said, 'We have the option of recommending to you all to close this school; we're not making that recommendation.'
However, they recommend that Third Future take over the school starting with the 2025-2026 school year. Linwood's CEO, Dr. Staughton Jennings, says they have faced challenges, but their scores have risen over the past few years. Jennings said, 'If you look at our trend data year over year, we've been able to show an increase year over year.'
Superintendent Burton explains reasons for recommendation to close Blanchard Elementary
Jennings also said the year-to-year contract has made it difficult to hire qualified teachers because teachers want stability in their jobs.
Linwood charter has shown gains in school performance, growing from the 2020-2021 simulated index score of 41.4% to a 50% performance score in 2023. However, as questions increase about the future of the U.S. Department of Education, the impact of 'school choice' and the LA GATOR program, and the school spending tracker rolled out by the Louisiana State Treasurer, it seems incremental gains will not be enough for schools to maintain good standing with the state.
The BESE board is expected to vote on April 9th on the possible contract change.

Shreveport Mayor highlights Economic Development Website, talks father's Day event, and speed camera bill
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS)—Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux highlights a new initiative to boost local business growth, celebrate community events, and address updates on traffic enforcement. Salute the Badge: A candid conversation with SPD Chief Wayne Smith One of the most significant announcements was the launch of a new economic development website, a one-stop shop designed to facilitate the city's collaboration with entrepreneurs and small business owners. 'When we came into office, we wanted to simplify the process for people to do business in and with the city,' said Mayor Arceneaux. 'You can now find checklists, permit information, and applications online, without needing to visit Government Plaza.' The website is accessible from the city's homepage and includes resources tailored to new and existing business owners. 'Small businesses create most of the jobs in this country,' the mayor emphasized, 'so we want to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit right here in Shreveport.' Mayor Arceneaux also expressed his excitement about the upcoming Father's Day 5K, organized by community leader Alex T. Ray. The mayor will attend—'more walking than running,' he joked—and praised the event's focus on fatherhood and community unity. 'There's strong data that shows children who grow up with a father or father figure do better in life.' Shreveport mayor speaks on La. speed camera bill The mayor also acknowledged recent successes that have brought national attention to the city, including the LSUS Pilots' national championship win and their record-setting 59–0 season. 'They'll be forever in the record books,' Arceneaux said proudly. Finally, he addressed Senate Bill 99, which limits the use of speed cameras to school zones. 'We're happy to continue that program, but we are exploring other ways to address the epidemic of speeding and red light running in the city,' he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
