Chicagoans heading to Rome to attend Pope Leo XIV's papal installation mass

CBS News16-05-2025

Pope Leo XIV will be formally installed as bishop of Rome on Sunday at St. Peter's Square, and many Chicagoans are heading to Italy for the historic occasion for America's first pope, who was born in Chicago.
"We are simply overjoyed," said Sister Barbara Reid, who was beaming with pride on Friday as she prepared to head to Rome for the papal installation mass for Pope Leo XIV on Sunday.
Reid is the president of Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park, where Pope Leo enrolled in 1978 and earned his Master of Divinity in 1982.
"To have not only the thrill and the excitement of our own graduate be chosen as Pope," Reid said.
Reid was in Rome last week when then-Cardinal Robert Prevost was elevated to the papacy. She said, as pope, he will bring a great deal to the Roman Catholics he will lead around the world.
"His emphasis on care for the planet, his emphasis on care for migrants and refugees; we know he is a missionary, and will certainly advance the concept that Pope Francis spoke about so often about being missionary disciples, being intent on serving the people who are the poorest and the neediest," she said.
In 1999, Father Bob, as he was known back then, was a mentor at the Augustinians' residence in Hyde Park, where young men studying to be priests were living. They were learning about the priesthood at Catholic Theological Union across the street.
A booklet recently printed by Catholic Theological Union is a compilation of prayers for Pope Leo from the Catholic Theological Union community and beyond. Reid is bringing the booklet to Rome for the pope.
"You can read all of them on our website. We created a place on our website where anyone who wanted to could add their prayer for Pope Leo, and some of them are just so touching," she said.
Fr. John Lydon will also join Reid on the trip. Lydon is a priest at Catholic Theological Union and lived with Pope Leo for about a decade in Peru.
He had this prayer for his friend:
"That wisdom that comes through our Lord, communicated also through his blessed Mother, will guide him with the challenges of the church, and will give him the strength to carry forth," Lydon said.

Cubs Linked to Marlins Ace Sandy Alcantara as Trade Deadline Nears

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs need starting pitching help at the trade deadline, and there isn't really any way around it. It's only a matter of time before the Cubs make a move to address the rotation, and MLB insider Jeff Passan believes Sandy Alcántara of the Miami Marlins is the best case scenario for Chicago. MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 17: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Tampa Bay Rays in the first inning of the game at loanDepot park on May 17, 2025 in Miami, Florida.... MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 17: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Tampa Bay Rays in the first inning of the game at loanDepot park on May 17, 2025 in Miami, Florida. More"Among Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon, the Cubs have a perfectly OK starting rotation to take into a playoff series," wrote Passan. "Considering the lineups they could face in the NL playoffs -- the Dodgers, Phillies, Mets and Diamondbacks, among others -- OK might not be enough. And that's not to say Alcántara would suddenly morph into a world-beater once he put on a Cubs uniform. He's just the kind of guy on whom teams in need take a risk." Alcántara has been far from perfect this season as he's given up a significant amount of runs. However, his resume speaks for itself. Contenders are going to take a chance on him, and hope a fresh start away from an awful Marlins team will help revive his season. The Cubs have certainly been in the market for starting pitching going back to the offseason. This makes a trade even more likely for Chicago, and Passan added there is some familiar history between the organizations. "The calculus here could change if Valdez or Gallen becomes available, but in terms of pitchers teams know will be available, Alcántara, even a slightly diminished version, is the best," wrote Passan. "With two more years of club control beyond this season, he slots nicely into the front of a rotation that lost Justin Steele to Tommy John surgery. And don't forget: The Cubs had a deal in place for Jesús Luzardo before medicals scuttled it. The teams are very familiar with one another's systems, and that always helps when trying to facilitate a trade." Chicago will certainly need a pitcher like Alcántara if it wishes to compete for a National League pennant or World Series title. 3 injured in multi-vehicle crash in Beach Park, Illinois

Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Chicago's far northern suburbs. Lake County Sheriff's police said, around 8 a.m., a GMC Acadia was headed north on Sheridan Road when it struck the stop arm of a school bus which was stopped near Mawman Avenue in Beach Park, Illinois. The GMC kept heading north, and sideswiped a Ford Focus, pushing it into a utility pole. The GMC then hit a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck and a Ford Flex SUV in the oncoming lanes of Sheridan Road. Police said it's possible the driver of the GMC, a 74-year-old man from Zion, Illinois, suffered a medical emergency before the crash. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Neither the driver nor the two children on the school bus were injured. The driver of the Ford Focus and the driver of the Chevrolet Colorado were taken to the hospital in serious condition, but police said their injuries were not life-threatening. The driver of the Ford Flex was not injured. The cause of the crash was under investigation Tuesday afternoon.

Some road flooding possible in Chicago Wednesday from overnight rain

There is the possibility of some ponding and flooding on low-lying roads as waves of steady rain come through the area Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The rain will come from a storm system with a slow-moving cold front, and bring the heaviest, steadiest rain Wednesday morning. Ahead of this system, the Chicago area can expect to see a few storms late Tuesday and then gradual increasing widespread coverage of rain overnight. See the full 7-day First Alert forecast Drivers should brace for a rainy, slow commute Wednesday morning and waves of rain will slowly taper off from west to east. The rain should end in Chicago by midday, but could persist in Northwest Indiana until late afternoon. Most areas can expect 0.25 inches to 0.5 inches of rain, but heavier totals are possible. While this storm system doesn't carry a risk of producing severe weather, the quantity of rain could lead to some ponding and flooding on low-lying roads and in low-lying areas.
