Days after former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber was found dead at her Virginia home, local authorities are now saying she died from "natural causes."
Alexandria police said on Wednesday that although the investigation into Aber's death is ongoing, at this time, detectives "have found no evidence suggesting that her death was caused by anything other than natural causes."
The 43-year-old was found dead in her home around 9:18 a.m. on Saturday after the police received a call about an unresponsive woman.
Aber served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia until her resignation in January.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia had not examined Aber's body yet, a Virginia Department of Health spokesperson told USA TODAY on Monday.
Before her death, Aber was dealing with a "longstanding medical issue," multiple outlets including Fox News and CBS News reported, citing a friend of the family. Police believe the medical issue contributed to her death over the weekend, Fox News and NBC News reported, citing a family friend.
It is unclear what medical issue Aber was reportedly dealing with before her death.
Who was Jessica Aber?
From August 2021 until President Donald Trump's inauguration in January, Aber served as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. She was nominated to the role by former President Joe Biden and unanimously confirmed by the Senate.
As U.S. attorney, Aber oversaw money laundering charges against two Russian nationals, a guilty plea from Siemens Energy over corporate espionage charges and murder convictions against an MS-13 gang member.
In 2023, the Eastern District of Virginia charged four Russia-affiliated military personnel with war crimes, including unlawful confinement, inhuman treatment and torture of a U.S. national in Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion.
Aber resigned from the U.S. attorney's office on Jan. 20 for undisclosed reasons.
'I've had the privilege of spending my career as a prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia working alongside talented, hard-working public servants who manage matters affecting citizens here and across the world,' Aber said in January. 'Concluding my service to the District as its U.S. Attorney has been an honor beyond measure."
'We are devastated by this loss'
Many have offered their condolences to Aber, including the current U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik S. Siebert, and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
"We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague," Siebert said in a statement. "We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world. Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard. Though we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and endeavor to live up to that standard."
"The loss of Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, is deeply tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this profoundly difficult time," Bondi said in her statement.

Russia actively transfers weapons to Africa: new Africa Corps replaces Wagner Group

Russia is increasing its military presence in West Africa by delivering tanks, artillery and advanced electronic warfare systems to regions where Africa Corps, a new Russian military formation, is gaining influence. Source: Associated Press Details: Journalists report that Russia is using cargo ships flying its flag to transport military equipment to West African ports. Notably, the Baltic Leader and the Patria, both under sanctions, unloaded at the port of Conakry in Guinea at the end of May. The equipment was then transported by land to Mali. The shipments include tanks, armoured personnel carriers, artillery systems (including 152 mm guns), electronic warfare systems, Spartak armoured vehicles and military infrastructure such as tanker trucks and boats marked in Russian. Satellite images also showed a Su-24 fighter jet at the airbase in Bamako. The Associated Press notes that, unlike military groups nominally subordinate to local armies, Africa Corps seems to have been granted autonomous aerial support. "We intend to expand our cooperation with African countries in all spheres, with an emphasis on economic cooperation and investments," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. "This cooperation includes sensitive areas linked to defence and security." After the disbandment of the Wagner Group in 2023 and the death of its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Kremlin established Africa Corps – a new structure that took over operations on the continent. The European Union has information that it is controlled by Unit 29155, a covert unit of Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU) known for sabotage and contract killings in Europe. Read more: Women no longer go out to work, fearing rape by Wagner mercenaries: how Russia is colonising Africa In December, the EU imposed sanctions on the commander of this unit, Major General Andrey Averyanov, for coordinating the Africa Corps' activities. "In many African countries, Russian forces provide security to military juntas that have overthrown legitimate democratic governments, gravely worsening the stability, security and democracy of the countries," the EU sanctions ruling said. Quote from Associated Press: "Researchers and military officials say the flow of weapons from Russia appears to be speeding Africa Corps' ascendancy over Wagner, helping it win over mercenaries that have remained loyal to the group. Africa Corps is also recruiting in Russia, offering payments of up to 2.1 million rubles (US$$26,500), and even plots of land, for signing a contract with the Ministry of Defence, plus more on deployment." Fox News Host Jesse Watters Uses Edited Clip to Cover Up Trump Flub

Fox News' Jesse Watters Primetime conveniently omitted a portion of Donald Trump's comment about a phone call with Gavin Newsom in order to make the California governor look bad. The attempted dunk tried to skirt the fact that Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Tuesday afternoon that he last spoke with Newsom 'a day ago,' which Newsom denied. 'There was no call. Not even a voicemail,' he wrote on X in response. Fox News anchor John Roberts obtained a record of a call from Trump to Newsom on Friday night Pacific time (Saturday morning in the east), and admitted the calls were not made 'a day ago,' as Trump claimed. 'This was June the 7th. Now, granted, this was on Saturday,' the Fox anchor said. However some on the right, like Watters, spun the story as somehow proof that Newsom was lying. When Watters introduced the topic Tuesday night, Fox's broadcast of Trump's comments just so happened to begin a split-second after he said those three words, omitting, 'a day ago' from its broadcast. 'Called him up to tell him: got to do a better job. He's done a bad job, causing a lot of death and a lot of potential death,' Trump said, as Fox portrayed it. Watters made no mention of the omission Tuesday night. Instead, he went ahead bashing Newsom anyways. 'Newsom responded, and he said there wasn't a phone call. He said Trump never called him. Not even a voicemail, he said. But John Roberts got Trump's call logs, and it shows Trump called him late Friday night and they talked for 16 minutes,' Watters said confidently. 'Why would Newsom lie and claim Trump never called him? Why would he do that?' he then asked. Newsom has already said that Trump didn't even talk about the National Guard during their call last week. 'We talked for almost 20 minutes and this issue never came up,' he told MSNBC. 'He never once brought up the National Guard. He's a stone-cold liar.'

Russian airstrikes kill 3 in Ukraine as Zelenskyy warns of evolving drone tech

Russian drone strikes and bombs killed at least three people in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight, regional officials there said, even though Moscow's latest drone and missile barrage elsewhere was significantly smaller than preceding nights. The Kharkiv Regional Military Administration said in a post to Telegram that another 60 people were injured by Russian attacks overnight, which included the use of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones, first-person view commercial-style drones and KAB guided bombs. Kharkiv -- Ukraine's second largest city with a pre-war population of around 1.4 million -- sits just 20 miles from the Russian border. That proximity has seen the city bombarded throughout Russia's full-scale invasion. Kharkiv has also faced intense recent attacks as Moscow expanded its drone and missile campaign, plus as Russian forces reportedly mass along the nearby border and threaten new incursions. Elsewhere on Tuesday night, at least five people were injured by Russian shelling in the southern Kherson region, local officials said in a post to Telegram. One person was also killed and another injured by Russian shelling in the eastern Donetsk region, officials said. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 85 drones and one missile into the country overnight, of which 49 drones were shot down or otherwise neutralized. Impacts were recorded in 14 locations, with drone debris falling in two other locations, the air force said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Tuesday night post to Telegram that he had spoken with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov about "our efforts to counter drones, protect against missiles and reinforce our air defense." The meeting came after Monday night's massive Russian attack on cities including Kyiv. "The Russians have once again used ballistic missiles from North Korea," Zelenskyy said of Monday night's attacks. "We are also tracking evidence that Russian-Iranian drone technologies have spread to North Korea. This is extremely dangerous both for Europe and for East and Southeast Asia." MORE: Zelenskyy demands 'action from America' after latest Russian drone, missile attack "The longer this war continues on our territory, the more warfare technologies evolve and the greater the threat will be to everyone," Zelenskyy added. "This must be addressed now -- not when thousands of upgraded Shahed drones and ballistic missiles begin to threaten Seoul and Tokyo." Russia's Defense Ministry, meanwhile, said its forces shot down 33 Ukrainian drones overnight into Wednesday morning. In Russia's Tambov region -- around 260 miles southeast of Moscow and 230 miles from the closest Ukrainian-controlled territory -- acting governor Evgeny Pervyshov said on Telegram that a fire broke out in the town of Kotovsk due to falling drone debris. "The situation is under control," Pervyshov wrote. But Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Counter-Disinformation Center operating as part of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said in a Telegram post that an explosives plant in the area was hit by drones. Kovalenko claimed that the Tambov gunpowder plant had been forced to suspend operations by the strike. "It produces gunpowder used for various types of small arms, artillery and rocket systems," he said of the facility. "The enterprise is one of the main suppliers of explosives for the Russian army," Kovalenko added. "With the beginning of a full-scale war in Ukraine, production at the plant has increased significantly." The governor of Russia's western Belgorod region said six people were also injured by a Ukrainian drone strike on a factory in the town of Shebekino. All were hospitalized, the governor said in a post to Telegram. Russian airstrikes kill 3 in Ukraine as Zelenskyy warns of evolving drone tech originally appeared on
