The legendary duo Ulganayagan Kamal Haasan and filmmaker Mani Ratnam have reunited after 38 years for Thug Life. Thug Life starts with a powerful narration of an old Rangaraaya Sakthivel ( Kamal Haasan ) where he speaks about how the world has known him as a gangster ever since his existence and his hide-and-seek game with the god of death.
Cut to 1994 in Delhi, where Sakthivel and his brother Manickam (Nasser) are having a meeting with Sadanand (Mahesh Manjrekar) to sort out all the conflicts which have led to gang war between them.
While Sadanand shakes hands with Manickam, he double-crosses them as police officers are waiting for Sakthivel, Manickam and their gang members.
As there is a shootout between police and Sakthivel's members, Manickam kills one local newspaper distributor so that there is a distraction and they can escape.
Sakthivel picks the newspaper distributor's son Amar as a shield and later adopts him. Amar grows up (Silambarasan) and handles the majority of his gang work.
Sakthivel gives responsibility of the gang to Amar while going to jail and tells every member he is now in charge of the gang. While Manickam smiles and accepts his decision, he is jealous and upset that Sakthivel has given the power to Amar over him.

Manickam now creates a rift between Sakthivel and Amar by telling the latter that it was Sakthivel, who killed his father despite knowing that he was a newspaper distributor and not a cop. Shattered Amar plans to execute Sakthivel with the help of Manickam and two other gang members at Hilsa (Nepal).
Sakthivel is shocked and shattered to see his close ones attacking him. They throw him from the snow-capped mountains and Amar declares himself the boss of the gang with Manickam being his partner.
So, will Sakthivel make a comeback and take revenge and get all the answers from his close ones turned enemies?
Mani Ratnam has presented the 90s style of cinema in a modern battle with his engrossing storytelling and gripping narrative. Mani has always enhanced his film with brilliant technical aspects and Thug Life is no different as Ravi K. Chandran's camera work is stunning with A. Sreekar Prasad's sharp editing.

Talking about the performances, Kamal Haasan carries the film with his pure charisma and rules the screen as Sakthivel. Right from emotional scenes to fight sequences, the legend shows his acting mettle with ease and finesse. Silambarasan wears an attitude with Amar and manages to make his screen presence count in front of Kamal Haasan. Abhirami and Trisha Krishnan have done their roles to T. Nasser also makes an impact with his portrayal of Manickam.
On the whole, Thug Life is a massy affair, which can be enjoyed on the big screen.

That age-old conundrum: why are men paired with women half their age in films?

Casting decisions by filmmakers often take me back to my high school biology lessons about puberty and menopause. This knowledge has been useful as I've tried to wrap my head around the possibility of an 82-yr-old (say, Amitabh Bachchan) and a 51-yr-old (say, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) being brother and sister in reality. This is not a random thought. I was led to it by the 2002 Hindi film, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, in which director David Dhawan cast Amitabh and Aishwarya as siblings. Which got me wondering why such biological improbabilities - and in some cases, impossibilities - occur so frequently in our cinema. The most striking recent example came in 2021 with the Malayalam film, One, starring Mammootty and Nimisha Sajayan as siblings. He is now 73. She, according to the internet, is 28. She looks even less. My first thought as a woman watching One was - Good heavens! That poor mother had periods for a minimum of 45 years. Okay, okay. No more wisecracks about biology. Here's my point. These bizarre casting choices are driven by the same mindsets behind romantic pairings in mainstream films. Financiers, producers, and directors, by and large, assume that audiences do not want to see female actors who are past a certain age in pivotal relationships with male protagonists (barring as mothers, aunts, etc). Truth: these decision-makers themselves find older women less interesting. So do male superstars. Such all-pervasive sexist ageism is what has now given us 70-yr-old Kamal Haasan playing 42-yr-old Trisha Krishnan's lover in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life. While in RS Prasanna's upcoming Sitaare Zameen Par (SZP), 60-yr-old Aamir Khan and 37-yr-old Genelia Deshmukh apparently play a couple. Kamal and Aamir are the producers of Thug Life and SZP, respectively. Angry fans tend to respond to such critiques of male stars by asking: Are you a mind-reader? How do you know what producers, financiers, directors and actors think? Answer: I've asked them. In 2001, after Gadar became a blockbuster, I asked Sunny Deol about the years that separate him and Ameesha Patel. As justification, Sunny pointed to similar age gaps between real-life couples. But Gadar was not pitched as an older-man-younger-woman romance. Besides, 15-40-yr age differences are not the norm in this country. But any outsider whose only exposure to India is through our mainstream cinema is likely to assume that the average Indian man is at least 20 years older than his wife/lover/ later, I posed the same question to Kamal in the context of his films. He replied that I should interrogate viewers instead about their preference for younger women. Not that male stars have given us concrete evidence gauged from market surveys. But if, indeed, they are right about viewers, it still merits the question: Why don't they use their tremendous influence to change attitudes? Besides, producers and directors across Indian language industries admit in off-the-record conversations that many male stars believe having a much younger woman as a screen lover or wife makes the man appear both younger and cooler. They don't want to be seen wooing or getting physical with women their age. By extension, if a woman young enough to be your grandchild plays your sister, perhaps you hope to convince audiences that you belong to her generation. Question 2 from fans: Aren't you being ageist towards men? No. I wish Amitabh, Mammootty, Kamal and Aamir careers that last as long as their lives. The issue is that the casting in their films devalues their women contemporaries, thus ensuring that no woman attains equivalent professional longevity. Aamir has been quoted in the press addressing criticism of SZP's casting. 'We have the advantage of VFX now,' he said, adding, 'Age is no longer a barrier for actors.' Lovely. Yet somehow, VFX was not deployed to make an 83-yr-old woman look 60 and cast her as the wife of the character he plays. Just saying.

Actor Kamal Haasan Loses Cool Over Sword Gift Stunt at MNM Meet Amid Language Row Fallout

Tempers flared at a Makkal Needhi Maiam meeting in Chennai as party chief Kamal Haasan lost his cool after a supporter attempted to gift him a sword on stage. Initially smiling for the cameras, Haasan quickly turned angry as the situation spiraled into chaos. A police officer intervened and secured the weapon, while security removed the man. Known for his rationalist and non-violent stance, Haasan's outburst comes at a time when he is already facing backlash over his Kannada language remark during the 'Thug Life' audio launch. His comment that 'Kannada was born from Tamil' has caused controversy, leading to the film being withheld from release in Karnataka. Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' low run at the box office; digital partner to reconsider 130 crore OTT deal

Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan's 'Thug Life,' which hit theaters on June 5, 2025, did not live up to the box office expectations. Despite the mass discussion around the reunion of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after 'Nayakan,' the gangster drama opened to mixed reviews, which affected its dramatic run. Now, the film has to face a fresh obstacle—Nails, which had previously acquired its digital rights, allegedly looking at the post-theatrical deal to resume. Netflix pushes for reduction. According to a report by Pinkvilla, Netflix is emphasizing a reduction of 20–25% on the earlier quoted amount for the digital premiere of 'Thug Life.' Initially, OTT rights were sold in banking to the legendary pair of ₹130 crore, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. However, with the fall of dramatic response, the platform is asked to reevaluate its investment. Talks are underway to release digital releases from eight weeks to only four, which indicates an attempt to promote access and returns. 'Thug Life's dark and gritty plot The film describes the dark and gritty story of Sakathivel Rangaraaya Naicker, a powerful crime boss in New Delhi, who takes an orphan boy to Amaran. As Amarran grows up in the ranks of the mafia, the tension between the two starts boiling, causing a brutal clash of strength and betrayal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah?
