In the Nave: Church hopes live music will put venue 'on the map'
A church which doubles as a music venue to help pay its bills is hosting a new series of concerts which it hopes will put it on the map.St Peter's Church in Parkstone often plays host to tribute acts and DJs but a new partnership will see it host some "very special" gigs by international artists.Church rector, the Reverend Mike Trotman, said the concert series - In the Nave - would be "carefully navigated"."We don't want anything too sweary," he said. "We need to tap in to what makes this a unique and special place."
The rector, who describes himself as a music lover, said he began exploring the idea of hosting concerts after hearing about Mr Kyps, a popular music venue in Parr Street which closed in 2018."There's a real appetite for live music," he said."I genuinely think we are doing something very special."The concerts, for up to 400 people, are being organised by music management firm Warm.Founder Ali Tillet said he wanted to "put the venue on the map for amazing artists to come and play year in, year out".
The first gig will feature Annie and the Caldwells, a soul band from Mississippi, signed to David Byrne's LukaBop record label."It's great to have them coming," said Mr Tillet."They will definitely bring the energy to the church because they are from a church background in America as well."Mr Tillet said he was "hugely excited" about the project."If we can get the artists I'm potentially going to have in the next 18 months to come and play, they will be moments that, if you are able to get tickets to those shows, you will remember it for a long time."

Holly Willoughby looks loved-up with husband Dan Baldwin during family day out to the park
HOLLY Willoughby held hands with her husband Dan Baldwin as they looked loved-up on a family day out to the park. The blonde beauty has been keeping a low profile of late since losing her spot on two TV shows. 4 Holly was pictured today with her producer hubby looking carefree as she cut a casual figure in baggy jeans and T-shirt. The couple - who have been married since 2007 - went for a walk around Richmond Park in London with their three kids this weekend. It's the first time the partnership have been photographed for some time following a turbulent year for the presenter. After stepping down from This Morning in October 2023, Holly recently lost another primetime role with ITV 's cancellation of Dancing on Ice. Her Netflix reality show, Celebrity Bear Hunt, is also facing the axe - with a second series yet to be approved despite several meetings. The triple blow means the mother-of-three is currently without a regular presenting gig for the first time in over 15 years. Holly, 44, was notably absent from the TV Baftas this year - despite her husband Dan in attendance. He is the founder of Hungry Bear Media, the production company behind several BAFTA-nominated shows including Michael McIntyre's Big Show and Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad. Despite stepping away from daytime TV, insiders say Holly has a "string of exciting projects" in the pipeline for 2025. It follows her hellish experience since being targeted by obsessed security guard Gavin Plumb, who planned to kidnap, rape and murder her. The mum of three's ordeal led to her quitting her presenting role on ITV1's This Morning and taking a break from the box altogether. She returned to screens for Dancing on Ice in 2024, joined by co-host Stephen Mulhern, and the duo teamed up for a short series reboot of You Bet! However, the ITV dance show has been "put on ice" once again. And Stephen will go on to host a full run of the challenge show solo.

England beat West Indies to clinch ODI series with Root masterclass
CARDIFF, June 1 (Reuters) - England batter Joe Root scored his 18th One-Day International century and surpassed 7,000 runs in the format when the hosts beat West Indies by three wickets on Sunday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Root's masterly 166 off 139 balls helped England, who won the first ODI by 238 runs at Edgbaston, chase down a target of 309 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, England made an early breakthrough to make it 6-1 by claiming the wicket of 18-year-old opener Jewel Andrew (0), before Brandon King and Keacy Carty put on a run-a-ball 141-run stand to calm West Indies' nerves. Spinner Adil Rashid broke the partnership when King (59) holed out to long-off, and all-rounder Will Jacks struck to end Carty's fluent knock of 103 off 105 balls, reducing West Indies to 205-3. Carty was dropped twice — on one and 41 — and also survived a few run-out chances, before going on to punish the England bowlers by notching his fourth ODI century. But Rashid continued to shine with the ball, trapping Shimron Hetmyer (4) lbw and finishing with figures of 4-63 to become England's highest wicket-taking spinner across formats. West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals, but captain and wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope (78) and Justin Greaves (22) came to their rescue, helping the visitors to a total of 308 all out in 47.4 overs. England opened their run chase in disastrous fashion, reduced to 2-2 after both openers, Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett, were dismissed for ducks. Dropped on 30 by Hope off the bowling of Jayden Seales, England skipper Harry Brook went on to make 47 as he tried to stabilise their innings before falling to Alzarri Joseph, who ended with figures of 4-31. With former captain Jos Buttler out for a duck and Jacob Bethell trapped lbw, Root anchored the innings, putting together a 143-run partnership with Jacks (49). But after Brydon Carse (2) was dismissed, Rashid (10) provided Root help on the other end as England chased down the target with seven balls to spare. Root, 34, also surpassed Eoin Morgan to become England's leading ODI run-scorer. The final ODI will be played at The Oval in London on Tuesday.

'Final defeat feels raw'
Southend United will reflect with pride on their journey to the National League's promotion final but it may take some time, according to boss Kevin Shrimpers were within 29 minutes of a return to the EFL before going down 3-2 in extra time to Oldham Athletic at Wembley Essex side have endured a troubled recent history, including a number of winding-up petitions, transfer embargoes, relegation to non-league football, and continued ownership issues before being taken over last July."What we've all been through at this club, you shouldn't have to go through those sorts of things," Maher told BBC Sport. "When we reflect we should be proud as a football club to see how far we've come in such a short period of time - but it's pretty raw because as a professional you want to win."Southend only secured their play-off place on the final day of the regular season before coming through extra time to beat Rochdale 4-3 in their play-off eliminator, and then squeezing past Forest Green Rovers on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the led twice in the Wembley showpiece in front of a record crowd of 52,115 with an own goal from Oldham's Manny Monthe and then Leon Chambers-Parillon's header in the first minute of extra after Joe Garner had levelled from the penalty spot early in the second half, James Norwood and Kian Harratt scored in the space of two minutes in extra time to send Oldham back to the EFL after a three-year absence."There were so many momentum shifts in the game," Maher, the former Southend midfielder, said."At 2-1 I thought we might go and get the third, and if you do that it probably puts it to the bed."Maher congratulated Oldham in his post-match press conference and added his voice to the calls for a third promotion spot from the National League."There's a bottleneck at this level, and this game tells you everything about the standard and quality in the league. "In the National league you've got to be better than 22 teams and only the top one goes up automatically, while in League Two you've only got to be better than 20 sides – it should be three up, of course it should."Whether it gets voted in or not I don't know, people say it's like turkeys voting for Christmas."
