UFC analyst questions if Khamzat Chimaev could swim in deep waters vs. Dricus Du Plessis
Din Thomas thinks Khamzat Chimaev would struggle against UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis.
Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) retained his middleweight title by defeating Sean Strickland (29-7 MMA, 16-7 UFC) a second time in this past Saturday's UFC 312 main event at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
Du Plessis wants Chimaev next, and has opened up as a betting underdog in a potential matchup against the undefeated phenom. Although Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) has torn through most competition so far, Thomas points to his two decision wins over Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman as a cause for concern.
'I think Khamzat is a sprinter,' Thomas said on 'The Ariel Helwani Show.' 'If you were to make fights one five-minute round, Khamzat beats anybody in the world, any weight class. But you can't fight championship-level fights for five rounds at the pace where he's at his best. If he fights like that at his best, I think Dricus is so durable and he's so smart that he'll be able to withstand that. Now they're swimming in deep water, and Khamzat can't swim that deep.'
Thomas sees Du Plessis weathering Chimaev's early storm, and dragging him to the championship rounds – where Chimaev has never been tested.
'I think that by the third round, Khamzat is like, 'All right, I don't really know. This guy is not going away.' Let's say he does pace himself a little better. Dricus will just pour it on him. So I think that pacing is a big factor. We always talk about this cardio thing, but cardio is really just being able to manage whatever pace you have based on the skill set you have. That's really what it comes down to.
'Like, if you have a very limited skill set and you're forced to be in situations that you're not comfortable in, you're going to have bad cardio. But when you have a very well-rounded skill set, and you can pace yourself better, you're going to have good cardio. That's really what it comes down to.'

"At the same time, I love Islam, and I really care for him. If this was the decision he wanted to make and chose to make, then I'm all for it. As it pertains to me as a fighter, I love it. I believe he's next to challenge for that title. As a champion going up, you absolutely should get that opportunity, if you're willing to vacate the belt like he did. I love it." Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) snapped Belal Muhammad's 11-fight unbeaten run to claim the welterweight title at UFC 315. He managed to stop the majority of Muhammad's takedowns and hurt him on the feet, a similar game plan he'll likely have to impose against Makhachev. If both Usman and Makhachev emerge victorious in their next fights, "The Nigerian Nightmare" is excited at the possibility of adding another marquee name to his resume. "I think him and Jack, I think that's a fantastic fight," Usman continued. "I don't count Jack out. Jack is very a formidable opponent. I said that even before his last fight. I said this is a guy, if you sleep on him, he will ruin your day. He went out there and he ruined Belal's year. ...JDM is definitely no easy out for anybody. "So, it's not just a shoo-in, Islam is going to come in and get that belt. I do think Islam has the ability to do it, but it's not going to be easy. Fast forward, I mean current pound-for-pound vs. former pound-for-pound, I think that's a blockbuster. That would be a great outing to go out there and get another blockbuster before I sail off."

At the time, she was 7-2 and coming off a 'Performance of the Night' bonus-winning decision win over Pearl Gonzalez. Maverick opened her UFC career with two wins. The promotion then matched her against another young fighter, Maycee Barber. Barber was on a two-fight losing skid at the time. She ended that run of defeats with a split-decision win over Maverick. Things did not get any easier for Maverick in her next matchup, as the UFC booked her opposite Erin Blanchfield, who was 1-0 in the UFC, but riding a four-fight winning streak. Blanchfield kept that winning streak intact with a unanimous decision win over Maverick. Since those back-to-back setbacks, Maverick has gone 6-1 with her only loss being a June 2023 decision to Jasmine Jasudavicius. She is 4-0 in her most recent bouts, and coming off a unanimous decision win over Jamey-Lyn Horth in December. Maverick is ranked 11th in the UFC's 125-pound division.
