Schoolboy attacked teacher like a 'ragdoll' and left her permanently disfigured

Metroa day ago

A teenager who attacked a teacher and said 'the stupid cow deserves it' has been spared prison.
Carol Shaw, who worked at St Paul's Academy in Dundee, was seriously injured after Keiran Matthew grabbed her and dumped her head-first on a concrete floor.
She was knocked unconscious after being thrown 'like a ragdoll' to the ground, and left lying in a pool of her own blood while Matthew played on his phone and put his feet up on another teacher's desk.
Matthew, who was 17 at the time of the attack but is now 18, walked free from court after his sentence fell within Scottish rules on avoiding short-term prison sentences for first offenders.
The attack happened after Matthew refused to get changed separately from other pupils for a PE class.
The measure had been agreed by Matthew, his foster mum and the school because of his previous aggression towards other pupils.
But on March 22 of last year he became 'agitated and heightened' over his separation from other pupils, so Ms Shaw was called in because she was deemed a 'safe' person for him and had successfully de-escalated volatile incidents.
Two other teachers and pupils were placed in a locked classroom away from Matthew, but Fiscal depute Laura Bruce told the court: 'The accused then realised they had gone to the ICT class and moved towards the door and said 'I'm f****** going in there too'.
'He tried to exit to the corridor where Ms Shaw had her back to him.
'She recalls him gripping her in a rugby-style grip with her arms pinned to her sides and the next thing she felt was the horrific impact of her head striking the floor.
'She was blinded by her own blood, which covered her face and top with a large amount of blood seen on the floor.
'Another teacher had witnessed the accused lift her completely off her feet, throwing her to the floor deliberately and landing head-first.
'Another said she appeared to be like a ragdoll flying through the air.
'The accused sat at a teacher's desk, with his feet on the desk and using his mobile phone.
'He told a teacher 'Sir, it wasn't an outburst of anger. She deserved it'.'
He later banged on the desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.'
A colleague took Ms Shaw to hospital due to an expected 20-minute wait for an ambulance.
She suffered concussion, was unable to finish sentences, and was given 10 stitches, leaving her with a large Y-shaped scar on her head.
Plastic surgeon Dr Ketki Kaushal said the assault could have been life-threatening.
Matthew pled guilty to seizing the teacher's neck and body, throwing her to the floor, causing her to strike her head and be rendered unconscious.
He admitted the assault was to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and the danger of her life.
Matthew, who has ADHD and an 'extremely low' IQ range between 47 and 59, said 'I am sorry' when he was cautioned and charged with the assault.
Solicitor Theo Finlay, defending, said: 'He has had longstanding issues managing his emotions. It is likely he was already in a heightened condition. He experiences nightmares and requires to be medicated.
'That is attributed to childhood abuse. He needs prompts to eat and struggles in noisy or busy environments. He was not being allowed into the changing room and had feelings of unfairness.
'He described becoming agitated. The teacher moved others away, which made him feel more agitated and singled out. At school he felt intensely disliked and frequently provoked by his peers.'
Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith said the assault merited 18 months in prison, but this was reduced for an early guilty plea.
The sentence then fell within Scottish sentencing rules on avoiding short sentences for first offenders, meaning Matthew was able to walk free from court.
He was placed under social work supervision for three years and ordered to attend courses including one for anger management.
Matthew was also placed on a Restriction of Liberty Order for 12 months between 9pm and 7am every night.
Sheriff Niven-Smith said: 'It is difficult to imagine a more serious assault, having regard to the consequences of your attack for Ms Shaw. More Trending
'It is not over-egging the pudding or exaggerating to say your attack has affected her life in every aspect.
'She is permanently disfigured. Photos show an extensive, significant scar on her head.
'Until her promotion, she was the safe person for you to seek sanctuary with if you felt overwhelmed. She has dedicated her life to vulnerable school children such as you.
'You have robbed her of her career as she has been unable to go back to school due to panic attacks, nightmares and night terrors as a result of this assault.'

Family of boy killed in stabbing plan march against knife crime

The family of a teenage boy who died after he was stabbed have said they want his death to make a difference as they plan a march to raise awareness about knife crime. Kory McCrimmon's family said his life 'will not be in vain' as they urged people to join the Parents Against Knives walk later this month. The 16-year-old died after he was found seriously injured in Greenfield Park in the east end of Glasgow on May 31 last year. A 14-year-old was last month sentenced to five years detention after admitting culpable homicide. The march comes in the wake of the deaths of teenagers Amen Teklay and Kayden Moy in separate incidents in recent weeks. READ MORE: Parents Against Knives walk rescheduled in Glasgow Dozens of children caught with knives across Scotland Majority of young people sceptical of national approach to knife crime – poll In a statement issued through Victim Support Scotland, Kory's family said: 'Kory McCrimmon's young life was a brushstroke in time, but we his family wish for his death to make a difference: Kory's life will not be in vain. 'Our aim here is to continue highlighting the increase in deaths and danger by knife and violent crime. Our sons and daughters are more than statistics, they deserve better. 'Kory's parents are very clear: if we can prevent at least one more family going through this life shattering agony, we have gone a long way in our mission, but let's go further. 'We walk in Kory's name, but we stand for all those lives lost or maimed to knife violence: too much, too many. No more. 'Come join our walk and lend your hearts and voices to making our streets, our young people and our lives safer.' Two boys aged 14 and 16 have appeared in court charged with murder following the death of 15-year-old Amen in the Maryhill area of Glasgow on March 5. Kayden, 16, was found seriously injured on Irvine beach in North Ayrshire after police were called to the area at about 6.45pm on May 17. A 14-year-old boy and two 17-year-old boys have appeared in court charged with murder following his death. The Parents Against Knives march will set off from Rangers' Ibrox stadium at 1pm on June 22 and those taking part will walk to Celtic Park in the east end. Kate Wallace, chief executive of Victim Support Scotland, said: 'Too many lives are being devastated by knife crime in Scotland. 'Behind every statistic, hundreds of lives are irreversibly impacted with tragic consequences for everyone involved; family, friends, siblings, school mates, and the wider communities in which we all live. 'We support the Parents Against Knives walk, organised entirely by the McCrimmon family in memory of their son Kory, which will undoubtedly help draw attention to this growing crisis. 'These are complex and sensitive situations which require a multi-agency response from the Scottish Government, victim support organisations, police, social work, youth work and others to work together to tackle knife crime and the devastation it causes. People across Scotland deserve to feel safe in their own communities.' The Scottish Government and Police Scotland have been approached for comment.

Fife football hooligan back in court to admit carrying knife

A football hooligan who battered a young Raith Rovers fan after a Fife derby has now admitted carrying a knife while making a violent threat. Callum Beautyman, who was part of a mob attack on the teenager at a Dunfermline bus stop in January last year, appeared at the city's sheriff court this week to plead guilty to two charges. On May 9 this year at an address in Lauder Street, Dunfermline, Beautyman behaved in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing, banging the door, holding a knife and making a threat of violence. The 18-year-old admitted a second offence of having a knife in public without reasonable excuse of lawful authority. Sheriff Susan Duff deferred sentence on Beautyman, of David Street, Dunfermline – formerly of Kelty – until July 2 for the production of background reports and his bail was continued meantime. His court appearance comes just a few days after his football fan attack co-accused, Mackenzie King, was re-sentenced for failing to do his unpaid work hours in the community for that crime. Beautyman and 21-year-old King previously pled guilty to the assault to injury while acting with others. Prosecutor Annie Henderson told the court that after the game at East End Park – a 2-1 win for Raith – away fans were making their way to Dunfermline's Queen Margaret train station and were approached by a group of teenagers. The pair were verbally abusive and then 'picked up' their victim and threw him to the ground, where he 'landed on his head'. The group continued to batter him as he lay on the ground. Their victim was taken to hospital with concussion after the attack and his hearing aid was broken. A victim impact statement also revealed he suffers nightmares and flashbacks, missed school exams and gave up playing football. The attack drew widespread condemnation from across the Scottish footballing community at the time. Beautyman was placed on an eight-month curfew – running 7pm to 7am daily – for the crime. They were each handed a three-year football banning order.
