Whitecaps 2, Montreal 0: Vancouver writes itself into the history books
You don't know what you don't know. And Jesper Sorensen didn't know he didn't have a bench to rely on.
At least that was the prevailing sentiment about the Vancouver Whitecaps coming into 2025. A team with a good core, but a paper-thin bench. Thinner than Christian Bale in The Machinist. Less depth than a DC superhero movie.
'The good thing for me is that I didn't know the players, so I didn't know that we didn't have a bench,' he said with a twinkle in his eye after training earlier this week.
But every time a player has gone down with an injury, or been allowed some bench time to recuperate in this frenetic start to the season, their backups have come in and succeeded.
MLS SuperDraft pick Tate Johnson, in his debut start, scored in the Whitecaps' 2-0 win over CF Montreal Saturday night at B.C. Place. The rookie got the start because Sam Adekugbe went down with an injury two games ago. His replacement on the back line, Édier Ocampo, was suspended for Saturday's game after a retroactive red card assessed by MLS DisCo this week.
In their mid-week CONCACAF Champions Cup game against Monterrey, centreback Belal Halbouni scored an 87th minute equalizer. The second-year centreback has just two starts and three appearances in league play, though his performances in Cup play have been impressive.
The Whitecaps' bench will now be severely tested. Ryan Gauld went down 23 minutes into Saturday's game after suffering a non-contact knee injury. He had to be helped by two staffers off the field, then past an applauding supporters' section into the tunnel. The severity of his injury will be determined after post-game testing.
Vancouver was already without Adekugbe and the revelatory Jayden Nelson, who came off five minutes into the Monterrey game with a hamstring strain. He's day to day, and questionable for the return leg of the Cup clash in Mexico.
With Johnson and Matias Laborda — who scored his first of the season against Montreal — eight different players have scored for Vancouver, across all competitions this season, further smashing that erroneous assessment of a shallow roster.
The Whitecaps have actually accomplished something never done in their MLS history — win three straight games to start the season. Vancouver and the Philadelphia Union are the only teams to win all three of their games to kick off 2025.
The team's defence has given up just two goals in three league games this season, and had shutouts in two of their last three. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made a point-blank save on Montreal striker Prince Owusu late in the second half, and got some luck when an shot caromed off the crossbar and out to keep the game scoreless.

Here's a look at what to watch for in today's race: Restarts, restarts, restarts Today's race will mark the third for Christopher Bell with new spotter Matt Philpott, who took over after Stevie Reeves left the team after Bell's All-Star win last month at North Wilkesboro. Let Bell, who starts 25th today, explain what Philpott will face in spotting today's race: 'He's in a for a rude awakening at this race track, let me tell you, because restarts here are probably the most intense restarts that we get all year long,' Bell told NBC Sports. 'Massive draft runs. Lots of lanes to pick where to go. 'He's been doing a lot of studying. He's been doing a great job, too. I think for getting thrown in the middle of the season, he's done everything you could ask for. 'From my side, really, there's been a couple of really tight clears. I had my incident with a teammate Ty (Gibbs) at Charlotte that hindered his race, so that was a bummer, but we worked through that. It's just me understanding his language and knowing his tone of voice, stuff like that. He's doing a really good job.' As Bell noted, restarts are a key part of the racing at Michigan because of how wide the track is, allowing drivers to use different lanes to get around cars. Of course, it also can create calamity and multi-car crashes. Seven cars were involved in a crash shortly after a restart in last year's race that eliminated Bell, Kyle Larson and Joey Logano. A new winner today? Six of the top 10 starters for today's race have yet to win a race this season. Those are Chase Briscoe (starting first), Kyle Busch (second), Chris Buescher (sixth), Ty Gibbs (eighth), Bubba Wallace (ninth) and Zane Smith (10th). Briscoe is starting on the pole for the third consecutive race. Busch is winless in his last 71 Cup races and finished fourth in this race a year ago. Buescher won here two years ago and finished sixth last year despite being involved in an incident. Gibbs finished third in last year's race. Four of the last five races have seen a driver score their first victory of the season. Those drivers were Ryan Blaney (Nashville), Ross Chastain (Coca-Cola 600), Joey Logano (Texas) and Austin Cindric (Talladega). Wait now or wait later With pit crews able to change four tires quicker than a fueler can fill a car with gas, crew chiefs will be left with the decision of having to make their driver wait on fuel or leave when the tires changed and with less gas. Fuel often plays a key role at this 2-mile track. While restarts will be pivotal, gaining track position with a faster pit stop also can prove key. Watch when teams wait for fuel and when they don't in today's race.
