BET Awards Set to Go Ahead as Planned Despite Los Angeles Protests; Organizers 'Monitoring' Situation

Yahooa day ago

Amid ongoing widespread protests across Los Angeles County against unlawful immigration raids, the organizers behind the BET Awards have reaffirmed that the 2025 ceremony at the Peacock Theater will go ahead as planned on Monday evening.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a BET spokesperson said, 'BET remains committed to the safety of our guests and staff. We are working closely with LAPD and monitoring the situation. The 2025 BET Awards will take place Monday, June 9th, 2025, at 8pm ET/PT as scheduled.'

Violent clashes erupted during immigration raids across Los Angeles this week, as demonstrations escalated into street battles between protesters and law enforcement. On June 6, protests turned chaotic when crowds fought running battles with LAPD and ICE agents who were attempting raids to pick up undocumented people. The unrest spread on June 7, with new confrontations breaking out between activists and federal officers in Paramount and Compton during continued enforcement operations.
The situation in Los Angeles escalated on Sunday as thousands of residents flooded the streets surrounding City Hall and the federal courthouse, bringing a major freeway to a halt in protest of President Donald Trump's move to deploy their state's National Guard to quell the demonstrations. The protests have led to questions around big public events in the L.A.-area.
In response, California Gov. Gavin Newsom formally requested that the Trump Administration 'rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and return them to my command.' He added in a statement on Instagram, 'We didn't have a problem until Trump got involved. This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they're actually needed.'
Further heightening tensions, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth tweeted on Sunday, 'If violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert.'
Newsom tweeted back at Hegseth, 'The Secretary of Defense is now threatening to deploy active-duty Marines on American soil against its own citizens. This is deranged behavior.'Best of The Hollywood Reporter

Doechii Slams Trump Administration In Powerful BET Awards Acceptance Speech

Source: Kevin Winter / Getty Doechii was all smiles as she accepted the 2025 BET Awards for 'Best Female Hip Hop Artist.' After all, it's the 'Anxiety' artist's first BET Award. But instead of a traditional acceptance speech, she used her platform to bring awareness to the peaceful protest outside the Peacock Theater, which is being forcefully interrupted by authorities. 'I do want to address what's happening right now, outside the building,' she said passionately.'These are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities. In the name of law and order, Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be — when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.' Dozens of people have been detained and taken into custody during raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, prompting protests in the DTLA area, NBC News reports. 'People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it is my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' she added. Per AP, an initial 2,000 Guard troops ordered by Trump started arriving Sunday, which saw the most violence during three days of protests driven by anger over Trump's stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws that critics say are breaking apart migrant families. These attacks on our civil liberties is more evidence of the Trump Administration's failure to the people. 'This isn't about public safety,' Gov. Gavin Newsom said. 'It's about stroking a dangerous President's ego.' Sly Stone's Fabulous Style

In 1974, decades before Ye, then known as Kanye West, packed Madison Square Garden for a twin album-fashion spectacular, Sly Stone, the cosmically groovy singer-songwriter who died on June 9, offered his own extravaganza of dance, funk and flash on New York's biggest stage. The occasion was a sold-out Sly & the Family Stone concert in front of more than 20,000 fans, and the centerpiece was Mr. Stone's wedding to Kathy Silva — a gold and black display of fabulosity. The bride and groom (and the whole wedding party, band included) wore coordinated Halston looks. Mr. Stone wore a gleaming cape and jumpsuit, the waist cinched with a big gold belt buckle, so he looked like a cross between a disco superhero and a sci-fi lord come lightly down to earth. Behind them, a dozen models in black dresses carried gold palm fronds. It was, The New Yorker declared, 'the biggest event this year.' It was also seven years after Mr. Stone arrived on the music scene promising 'A Whole New Thing,' and boy, had he delivered. He introduced not just a whole new sound but a whole new kind of style to the stage. Like his music, it crossed genre, race, gender and audience, offering unity in a psychedelic stew of fringe, rhinestones and lamé that was sometimes celebratory and sometimes chaotic, often outrageous, but almost always impossible to forget — whether it was on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' or the Woodstock stage.
