Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger reports racial abuse during FIFA Club World Cup match against Pachuca
Antonio Rudiger, Real Madrid's defender has reported a serious allegation of racism during the team's 2025 FIFA Club World Cup game against Pachuca. The incident occurred during stoppage time and it has sparked a heated debate.
The incident took place during the closing moments of the match played at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Rudiger, a key player in Real Madrid's line-up clashed with the Pachuca's captain Gustavo Cabral after alleging he was fouled.
Rudiger informed referee Ramon Abatti Abel of a racist abuse directed at him during the argument. In response, the referee crossed his arms over his chest and signaled the activation of FIFA's anti-racism protocol. However, Cabral denied he racially abused Rudiger.
FIFA has a three-step process for handling racist abuse. The match is first stopped, it is then suspended if the issue persists, and ultimately abandoned if the problem cannot be resolved.
In the above scenario, the game ended shortly after the incident, with Real Madrid securing a 3-1 win. But tensions rose post-match as players continued to argue.
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso extended his support for Rudiger, addressing the issue.
'Toni has informed us about something,' Alonso stated in the post-match press conference.
'We have to wait and see now. I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate. But if something did happen, measures need to be taken, and we support Antonio because this is something unacceptable. There's no tolerance for this at any level of football, and whenever it occurs, measures must be taken. That's what Antonio has told us, and we believe him,' he added.
Gustavo Cabral, the accused Pachuca captain, denied any racial abuse. 'It was a fight. We collided. He said that I hit him with my hand, and then there was an argument, and the referee made the racism sign, but I was telling him the same thing the whole time,' Cabral expressed his take on the incident. He admitted to using an expletive and calling Rudiger a 'coward' but explained that his words weren't motivated by any racial remark.
Pachuca head coach Jaime Lozano also addressed the allegations in the post-match press conference.
'I haven't spoken to Cabral about this,' Lozano said.
'I cannot give you an explanation about it because this is the first time that I have heard of this news. It cannot be justified at all. I have known Cabral for a little while, and I have never heard of something like that with Pachuca players. I cannot defend my captain at any cost, but I will talk about it with him," he added.

Kylian Mbappe back in training after missing Real Madrid's first two FIFA Club World Cup 2025 games: Reports
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is back in training after missing its first two FIFA Club World Cup 2025 matches due to an acute case of gastroenteritis, according to reports on Monday. Mbappe missed Madrid's first match against Al Hilal due to illness, with the club confirming he had a fever. The French skipper was even admitted to hospital and was later discharged. As a result, Mbappe didn't travel with the team to Charlotte for its second game against Pachuca and stayed back at the team hotel. ALSO READ | Napoli's leading goalscorer, Dries Mertens, announces retirement from football Mbappe has been an important part of Real's attack and was the top scorer last season, netting 43 goals in 56 appearances in his debut year after joining from Paris Saint-Germain. First-placed Real will face second-placed RB Salzburg in their final game of the group stage on June 27. Real must avoid defeat against Salzburg to secure qualification. A loss would leave its fate hinging on the Al Hilal vs Pachuca result — anything but a win for the Saudi side would still send Xabi Alonso's team through.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Atletico Madrid vs Botafogo live time, streaming
Atlético Madrid still have a shot at reaching the Club World Cup round of 16, but they must beat Botafogo by at least three goals to overtake them in Group B. After a heavy defeat to PSG in their opening game, the Spanish side bounced back with a 3–1 win over the Seattle Sounders, effectively knocking the MLS team out of the competition. Pablo Barrios was the standout performer, netting twice in a commanding display. However, the damage from their loss to the French giants leaves Atlético with a mountain to climb when they face Botafogo in Pasadena on Monday. The Brazilian side caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far by defeating PSG, and they'll be confident heading into this crucial clash. Under Renato Paiva, Botafogo executed a near-perfect defensive performance against PSG, allowing only two shots on target while capitalizing on their limited attacking chances. A similar effort would see the Copa Libertadores winners top what's been labeled the "Group of Death." Atlético Madrid need a big win in Pasadena to progress, but Diego Simeone is unlikely to field an overly attacking side, expect a typically balanced approach from the Argentine manager. Antoine Griezmann is expected to return to the starting 11, likely taking the place of Alexander Sørloth up front. In midfield, Connor Gallagher may come in for the experienced Koke. After his impressive performance and brace in the previous match, Pablo Barrios is set to retain his spot. Although Clément Lenglet is available again following a one-match suspension, no major changes are anticipated in Atlético's defensive lineup. Botafogo team news New signings Joaquín Correa and Arthur Cabral have seen limited action for the reigning Copa Libertadores champions at the Club World Cup, while ex-Everton and Napoli midfielder Allan started in their second group match. Cuiabano, who returned from a back injury to make a brief substitute appearance against PSG, is expected to be in better shape for the upcoming clash. However, with head coach Renato Paiva unlikely to alter his starting lineup, the winger may once again start from the bench. Igor Jesus, who is set to join Nottingham Forest, has been Botafogo's standout performer in the U.S., finding the net in both of their games so far. He's emerging as a dark horse in the race for the Golden Boot. Atletico Madrid vs Botafogo starting 11 (probable) Atletico Madrid starting 11: Oblak; Llorente, Giménez, Le Normand, Galan; Simeone, De Paul, Barrios, Gallagher; Griezmann, Alvarez.
