Teamsters president urges Congress to scrap AI state law ban

CNA6 hours ago

The president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters urged Congress on Wednesday to scrap a proposal that would effectively bar states from regulating artificial intelligence for 10 years, calling it "a disaster for communities and working people."
Teamsters president Sean O'Brien, who spoke at the Republican National Convention last year, said in a letter posted on social media site X that the measure "denies citizens the ability to make choices at the local or state level."
"Pure and simple, it is a give-away to Big Tech companies who reap economic value by continuing to operate in an unregulated void where their decisions and behavior are accountable to no one," he said.
The letter from the head of the powerful union that represents more than 1.3 million workers, many of them in blue-collar jobs such as trucking, is the latest instance of bipartisan pushback against the measure in the lead-up to crucial votes by the U.S. Senate this week.
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz authored the version of the measure included in President Donald Trump's sweeping tax-cut and spending bill. Proponents say the measure is necessary to allow small AI companies to experiment and lift the burden of complying with laws that differ from state to state.

Micron forecasts quarterly revenue above estimates on AI-driven memory chip demand

Micron Technology forecast fourth-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, betting on robust demand for its memory chips used for artificial intelligence hardware in data centers. Shares of the memory chipmaker rose 6.7 per cent in extended trading. Micron is positioned as a key player in the AI memory market. Its high-bandwidth memory chips are used in some of the most advanced artificial intelligence systems, including data centers. Many cloud companies, such as Google, have reaffirmed their investments this year to expand AI infrastructure, underscoring strong demand for AI-related products. Micron said it expects revenue of $10.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, in the fourth quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of $9.88 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

NBA-Lakers confirm sale of majority stake in franchise to Mark Walter

The Buss family have agreed to sell a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to TWG Global CEO Mark Walter, the two parties confirmed on Wednesday, while adding that Jeanie Buss will remain governor of the storied NBA franchise. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but when the news was first reported last week it said the agreement valued the 17-times NBA champion Lakers at $10 billion, making it the largest-ever sale of a professional sports team. Walter, who has ownership interests in several professional sports teams including MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, has been a minority owner of the Lakers since 2021. "From the day our father purchased the Lakers, we have been determined to deliver what the City of Los Angeles deserves and demands: a team that is committed to winning – relentlessly – and to doing so with passion and with style," Buss said in a news release. "I have gotten to know Mark very well over time and been delighted to learn how he shares those same values." The sale is expected to close in the third or fourth quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions including obtaining NBA approval, the two parties said. The late Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 and turned the team into one of the world's most popular sports franchises, winning five championships during their now-iconic "Showtime" era in the 1980s. Through the years the Lakers' rosters have featured world-famous talents such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and LeBron James. Jeanie Buss, who took over as principal owner after her father Jerry died in 2013 and became one of the most powerful women in sport, will oversee all team operations on a day-to-day basis for the foreseeable future. "Since Dr Jerry Buss first purchased the team in 1979, they have truly set the standard for basketball in one era after another, which is why you can find people anywhere in the world wearing Lakers shirts and jerseys," said Walter. "I admire what he, Jeanie and the Buss family have built, and I know how much this special organization matters to Southern Californians and to sports fans everywhere. "I also have tremendous respect for Jeanie's continued commitment to maintaining the Lakers' long-term vision and elite status, and I'm excited to work with her on the next era."

Regulator orders Fannie, Freddie to consider crypto holdings in loan assessments

The regulator overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Wednesday ordered the housing giants to consider cryptocurrency as an asset for single-family mortgage loan risk assessments, a move that could potentially open the door to borrowers using crypto investments to qualify for home loans. William Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said in a social media post that he had ordered Fannie and Freddie to "prepare their businesses to count cryptocurrency as an asset for mortgage," which he said would be in line with President Donald Trump's vision of making the U.S. "the crypto capital of the world." The FHFA oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which have operated under U.S. government control since 2008 after suffering heavy losses during the subprime mortgage crisis. They guarantee over half of the nation's mortgages. Cryptocurrencies are known for being highly volatile and are often subject to wild price swings, sometimes for no clear reason. In February, bitcoin - the largest cryptocurrency - suffered its biggest weekly fall in two years, dropping 16 per cent, although it has since recovered. Trump has sought to overhaul U.S. cryptocurrency policy after courting cash from the industry on the campaign trail. Trump has appointed industry-friendly regulators and has hosted industry leaders at the White House. Cryptocurrencies have reacted favorably, with bitcoin reaching all-time highs this year. In a directive signed Wednesday, Pulte said that considering additional borrower assets - such as cryptocurrencies - could enable Fannie and Freddie to assess the full financial picture of a borrower and could "facilitate sustainable homeownership to creditworthy borrowers."
