Pune dowry death: Child welfare committee says maternal grandmother fit person to take care of Vaishnavi's child
Following the tragic death of Vaishnavi Hagawane, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has named her mother, Swati Kaspate, as a 'fit person' to take care of and protect Vaishnavi's nine-month-old son, Janak Hagawane.
The decision was taken on Friday, after a thorough assessment by the district child protection officer, who submitted a social investigation report to the CWC, said officials.
On 16 May, Vaishnavi Hagawane allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Bhukum in Pune, following harassment from her in-laws over dowry demands. Her husband Shashank, father-in-law Rajendra, mother-in-law Lata, sister-in-law Karishma, and brother-in-law Sushil were later arrested by police. At the time of the arrest, the Hagawane family gave the child's custody to their family friend Nitin Chavan.
However, Chavan allegedly threatened the parents of Viashnavi at gunpoint when they went to take custody of the child. He was arrested on Friday from the Nepal border.
Aditi Tatkare, minister for women and child development in her X post, said, 'Following the demise of Vaishnavi Hagawane from Pune, the Child Welfare Committee has appointed her mother, Swati Kaspate, as the fit person to take care of her nine-month-old son, Janak Hagawane. Based on the social investigation report submitted by the district child protection officer, Swati is deemed the appropriate person, and her social, emotional, and family environment is conducive to the child's welfare. The complete responsibility for the child's education, health, and overall development will rest with Swati.'
Jitendra Dudi, Pune district collector, said, 'The order was passed based on a social investigation report submitted by the district child protection officer after proper investigation and home visits.''
According to CWC member Prakash Khadilkar as per section 52(1) of the Juvenile Justice Act and sub-rule 13 of the Maharashtra Juvenile Justice Rules 2018, if the biological mother and father are not present then CWC can appoint a fit person to take care of the child or admit him/her to Child Care Unit (CCU).
'The child is just nine months old. So the temporary custody of the child was given to his grandmother subject to the pending enquiry,' said Khadilkar.
According to Khadilkar, a fit person is announced for a period of four months. After four months, the child needs to be produced before CWC. If CWC is satisfied, then we can extend custody to four more months. If required, CWC can ask the district child protection officer to prepare an individual care plan for the child.
As far as this case is concerned, in future, if the biological father of the child seeks custody of the child, in that case, the case will be transferred to the family court, said officials.

Delhi: Two juveniles held for stabbing 16-year-old boy to death in Anand Parbat area
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Two juveniles have been apprehended in connection with the stabbing death of a 16-year-old boy in Delhi's Anand Parbat area, police said on Saturday. On June 2, police received information about a grievously injured and unconscious boy lying near Durga Mandir in Taliwalan Basti. A police team reached the spot immediately. As per the statement, an eyewitness informed the police that while he was returning home with the victim, two unidentified boys approached from behind and stabbed the 16-year-old before fleeing. The victim was rushed to RML Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said. Following the incident, an FIR (No. 275/25) was registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code at Police Station Anand Parbat, and the investigation began. According to DCP Nidhin Valsan's statement, the police team analysed CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and developed local intelligence. On June 5, based on credible secret information, two juveniles were apprehended. During questioning, the juveniles admitted to their involvement in the incident, as per the police. Based on their disclosure, a blood-stained knife, believed to be the weapon of offence, was recovered from a park near Jeewan Mala Hospital. The case is under further investigation, and the Juvenile Justice Act is processing the accused. In a separate incident, the Delhi Police solved a sensational murder case reported from the Bindapur area and arrested a 24-year-old man, Nitish Dass. The arrest was made by a joint team comprising personnel from the Anti-Narcotics Cell and the Bindapur police station, operating under the Dwarka district. The case came to light on May 9, 2025, when the Bindapur police station received a PCR call in the evening. The caller, Baleshwar Dass, informed police that his son, Akhilesh, had been strangled and his body had been left outside their rented home in Phase-2, JJ Colony, Sector 3, Dwarka. A case was registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and an investigation was launched without delay. Given the gravity of the offence, a special investigation team was formed under the supervision of Inspector Subhash Chand of the Anti-Narcotics Cell and Inspector Darshan Lal, SHO of Bindapur police station. The police analysed CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas and reviewed the activities of known local criminals. During this process, a suspect--later identified as Nitish Dass--was seen near the crime scene in CCTV footage. On May 11, a head constable from the Anti-Narcotics Cell received a key tip-off through secret informers that confirmed Dass's identity and involvement. After several days of surveillance, the police tracked the accused to Nawada in Bihar. On May 14, a police team apprehended Nitish Dass in Nawada with support from local authorities and brought him back to Delhi for further legal action. (ANI)

CBI: Hisar man raped multiple kids, used them for pornography
The Hisar district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Friday asked the CBI to arrange counselling sessions for the victims of an alleged sexual predator who has been arrested by the central agency for raping and circulating explicit child sexual abuse material on the internet. The CBI arrested the 40-year-old physically challenged bachelor from his Hisar residence on June 3, days after a case was registered on May 29 on charges of rape and sexual assault on multiple minor victims. The man was arrested following searches at his residence. The agency said it has seized electronic gadgets containing incriminating material, which showed that he allegedly raped, sexually assaulted, and threatened multiple children for pornography. Sources within the agency said that the accused, who operated a common service centre (CSC) in a rural area, had been exploiting the victims over the past few years. Two of the minor victims Thursday recorded their statements with the Hisar Child Welfare Committee. A member of the Committee, Manoj Kaushik said that the panel will ensure protection and welfare of the victims apart from financial assistance to them. The committee is established under the Juvenile Justice Act (J J Act), 2015, to handle cases of children in need of care and protection. They have the powers of a first-class magistrate and are responsible for providing care, protection, treatment, development, and rehabilitation for these children. According to the CBI, none of the victims or their families had approached police with the complaint before the agency charged the accused for creating, browsing, collecting, possessing, exchanging, and uploading child sexual abuse material. The agency identified the accused and the victims using the Interpol's International Child Sexual Exploitation (ICSE) database and Cyber Tipline Reports, generated by Google and submitted it to Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). 'The analysis of the images and videos using cyber forensic tools revealed the location of the incidents to Hisar in Haryana, depicting multiple victims of sexual assault and abuse by the accused,' said the CBI.
