US travel advisory linking Meghalaya with terrorism ‘incorrect', says CM Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday asserted that the travel advisory issued by the United States linking the state and the northeastern region with terrorism and violence is incorrect, and he would take up the matter with the US Ambassador to India. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong also asserted that the state is the safest place in the world for tourists.
The US government had recently issued an advisory asking its citizens to reconsider visiting Meghalaya and other northeastern states due to terrorism and violence.
Permission is not required if employees are travelling only to the capital cities of these states, it said.
"The US Embassy has given a completely wrong status to Meghalaya and the North East as a whole. I do not think the notification is correct," Sangma told PTI.
The chief minister said he would be meeting the US Ambassador to India in this regard.
"I will be presenting facts and figures to the US Ambassador as well as to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs," he said.
Responding to the advisory, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, "It's unfortunate that the US has issued such an advisory. We don't know where they collect their information from to place Meghalaya in that category."
Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, defended the state's record on safety and hospitality.
"Meghalaya is one of the safest places in the world, and people of the state are known for their hospitality," he told PTI.
Tynsong said people who have not visited Meghalaya and met the people may have all sorts of doubts.
"Talk to those who have visited Meghalaya and met the hardworking people living in the beautiful villages of the state. These are the real ambassadors," he said.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the state is expected to host 20 lakh visitors this year, and the tourism department has charted a calendar of events for the entire year, with events like the Cherry Blossom Festivals.
The state government has also initiated a programme to induct 'Tourist Buddies' who will assist travellers at major locations.
"The state is recruiting 50 Tourist Buddies in the state capital itself, where they will be stationed at key tourist locations such as Wards Lake, Golf Links, and Khyndai Lad," Lyngdoh said.
A senior tourism officer told PTI that the state government plans to invest over ₹ 1,000 crore to boost the tourism sector.
He said the sector provides employment to over 50,000 people directly and indirectly and is one of the largest job providers in Meghalaya, second only to the state government which employs over 85,000 people.

EC to review voters' lists in six states to weed out illegal immigrants

As part of the intensive review, poll officials will carry out house-to-house verification to ensure an error-free voters' list, starting immediately with Bihar Aman Sahu New Delhi The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to carry out an intensive review of electoral rolls — that is, the voters' list — this year in six states, beginning with Bihar, to eliminate illegal foreign migrants by checking their place of birth, according to a report from news agency PTI. Assembly elections are scheduled in Bihar later this year, and in five other states — Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal — in early 2026. The move follows crackdowns in various states on illegal immigrants into India, including those from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Eventually, the poll authority will begin special intensive revision across the country 'for the discharge of its constitutional mandate to protect the integrity of the electoral rolls'. In view of the Assembly elections in Bihar, the ECI has decided to conduct its special intensive revision in the state immediately. The last such exercise for the state was conducted in 2003. The terms of the legislative Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal end in May–June next year, and a comprehensive review of the electoral rolls in these states will commence by the end of this year, ECI officials told PTI. Amid allegations by opposition parties that the election body has manipulated voter data to help the BJP, the poll panel has taken additional steps during the revision process to ensure illegal immigrants are not enrolled in the voters' list at any stage. An additional 'declaration form' has been introduced for a category of applicants seeking to become electors or shifting from outside the state. They will have to prove that they were born in India before 1 July 1987, and provide documents establishing date of birth and/or place of birth. One of the options listed in the declaration form is for those born in India between 1 July 1987 and 2 December 2004. They will also have to submit documents verifying the date/place of birth of their parents. The ECI said multiple reasons — such as rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths, and inclusion of names of foreign illegal immigrants — have necessitated the revision to ensure integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls. While conducting the revision, the EC will scrupulously adhere to the constitutional and legal provisions regarding eligibility to be registered as a voter as well as for disqualifications for registration in an electoral roll, which are clearly laid down in Article 326 of the Constitution and Section 16 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, respectively, the poll authority said.

After English, a lesson in French: Shashi Tharoor slams Pakistan in Russia

Shashi Tharoor. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor , widely recognised for his eloquence in English, drew widespread praise this week for speaking fluent French while strongly criticising Pakistan's inclusion in an upcoming anti-terrorism conference organised by Russia. During a meeting in Moscow with Russian Liberal Democratic Party chairman Leonid Slutsky, Tharoor responded in French to Slutsky's remarks regarding a proposed summit on combating terrorism. Slutsky had announced Russia's plans to host a conference early next year involving the parliamentary heads of six countries: Turkey, Iran, Russia, India, Pakistan, and China. He emphasised the need for concrete action, not just discussion, on the issue of terrorism. In a striking moment, Tharoor replied in French, directly addressing the problem of Pakistan's involvement. "There is a country that unfortunately provides a safe haven for these terrorist groups," Tharoor said. "They have their headquarters, they train terrorists in their country, fund them, arm them, and send them to other nations. It's difficult for us to ignore the fact that they enjoy patronage in Pakistan. " The video of Tharoor's French-language exchange with Slutsky quickly went viral on social media, earning him praise for both his linguistic skill and diplomatic clarity. Following the meeting, Tharoor posted on X: 'Good to renew my acquaintance with my Russian counterpart, Mr Slutsky, who had visited Parliament in New Delhi a few months ago with a Russian delegation. We exchanged views on regional peace, Operation Sindoor , and possible avenues of future parliamentary cooperation.' Tharoor has long been vocal about Pakistan's links to terrorism and reiterated India's concerns abroad while leading the Indian delegation under the government's Operation Sindoor global outreach initiative.

Plea to rescue fishermen stranded in Iran

Member of Parliament C. Robert Bruce has appealed to Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar to take immediate steps to rescue 33 fishermen from Idinthakarai village in the district who were now stranded in Iran. In a memorandum to the Minister, Mr. Robert Bruce said 33 fishermen from Idinthakarai were working in the mechanised boats of Iran for the past several months. After the Iran – Israel war, the families of these fishermen cannot contact their breadwinners and hence the families were worried. Hence, the Ministry of External Affairs should take immediate steps for ensuring their safe return to their native place, Mr. Robert Bruce said. The MP has also sent a similar appeal to the Ambassador of India to Iran at Tehran seeking his intervention in rescuing the stranded Idinthakarai fishermen.
