Mercedes-Benz has appointed Abey Kgotle as its new CEO, among key personnel changes announced this week.
Kgotle will assume his new role from December 1, 2025, following the November 30 departure of the local division's current CEO Andreas Brand.
The outgoing CEO is assuming a new role in Stuttgart, Germany, where he will be responsible for seven manufacturing operations around the world.
The leadership change comes at a time when Mercedes-Benz, along with its fellow German manufacturers, is losing market share in South Africa.
To put that into perspective, Mercedes sales dropped by 82% between 2014 and 2024, BusinessTech reported earlier this year, while its counterparts Audi and BMW/Mini have seen their volumes drop by 70% and 50% respectively.
New CEO Abey Kgotle currently serves as Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at Mercedes-Benz SA. He assumes the new role with more than 20 years of experience in strategic human resources management as well as labour relations, advanced negotiations and stakeholder engagement.
Kgotle has held executive roles at numerous blue-chip companies across the manufacturing and mining industries, including Lonmin and Samancor Manganese.
He has also held senior HR management roles at the City of Johannesburg and Naschem, a division of state-owned enterprise Denel.

Further to that, he has served on the boards of Mercedes-Benz Financial Services and Daimler Trucks and Buses SA.
Kgotle currently also serves as Chairman of the Automobile Employers Organisation (AMEO), which represents South Africa's OEMs.
'We warmly welcome Mr Kgotle on his appointment as CEO of MBSA Limited. We look forward to his leadership that brings new energy and vision as he continues to build on our solid foundation and pursue new opportunities for growth and innovation,' said Wilfried Porth, Chairperson of the Board of Directors.
As the outgoing CEO, Brand also currently serves as Executive Director of MBSA Manufacturing, a separate replacement for that role will be announced in due course, the company said.

Verstappen says he would welcome Vettel having a role at Red Bull
Max Verstappen said he would welcome fellow four-times Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel back to Red Bull after the German spoke of possibly succeeding consultant Helmut Marko at the team. Austrian Marko, 82, a former racer who was blinded in one eye after a stone pierced his visor during the 1972 French Grand Prix in Clermont-Ferrand, has a contract until the end of next year. Vettel, 37, won consecutive titles with Red Bull from 2010-13 and retired in 2022 after stints at Ferrari and Aston Martin. 'It's more than normal that someone that has achieved so much with Red Bull, has been brought up by Red Bull (should return),' Verstappen told reporters at the Austrian Grand Prix on Thursday when asked for his thoughts. 'In a sense there's always a spot available, right? 'I think also Seb always kept a really good relationship with Helmut anyway, even when he left. I didn't know that of course they were talking but I'm sure that there's always a space for Seb in any kind of form.'

Thungela Resources navigates coal production hurdles amid global economic challenges
Thungela Resources, the thermal coal-mining group said its Goedehoop and Isibonelo mines are approaching the end of their life of mine. As a result, a restructuring process had started at these operations during the six months to June 30, 2025. Image: Bloomberg Thungela Resources management on Thursday said coal production in South Africa during the six months to June 30 was bolstered by incremental underground production. However, the opencast operations, primarily at Isibonelo and Khwezela, were impacted by higher-than-expected rainfall, the chief financial officer Deon Smith said in a pre-close statement. In Australia, production and export saleable product qualities in the first half were affected by challenging geology. Smith said Thursday that production is expected to improve in the second half of the year. The share price fell by 4.81% on the JSE to R82.91 in the afternoon, continuing a decline from R111.46 a year ago. Smith said they remained disciplined in executing strategy amid a challenging operating environment, characterised by volatile coal prices and fluctuating foreign exchange rates. In South Africa, the Elders project began to produce export saleable production, while the Zibulo North Shaft project was on budget and on schedule for completion in 2026. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ In Australia, the remaining stake in Ensham was acquired from co-investors. Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) performance continued to benefit from industry collaborative efforts. Rail performance from January 2025 to May 2025 was 55.5 million tons for the industry, reflecting a 17% improvement on the first half of 2024. 'The improved performance is mainly due to fewer security-related issues and improved locomotive availability and reliability, largely thanks to the additional locomotives introduced onto the North Corridor coal line. The signaling project is expected to commence in the second half, which should further enhance rail performance in 2026,' management stated. The threat of higher tariffs and resultant instability in global trade had caused disruptions among the largest economies, constraining global economic growth and impacting energy markets. Conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East were disrupting supply chains and contributing to commodity price volatility. Thermal coal prices had declined since the latter part of 2024, reflecting shifts in demand and supply. Demand had slowed due to the global economic downturn, coupled with big stockpiles across major export hubs, particularly in India and China. Imports into these regions are further impacted by increases in domestic coal production for power generation and industrial use. Export saleable production in South Africa was expected to be approximately 6.4 million tons for the first half of 2025, compared to 6.2 million tons in the first half of 2024. The increase in production is mainly due to improved rail performance and incremental production at the group's underground operations. Full-year production guidance remained appropriate, with further improvements expected in the second half. Export saleable production at Ensham was anticipated to be about 1.6 million tons (on a 100% basis), compared to 2.1 million tons (on a 100% basis) in the first half of 2024, as a result of developments through more challenging geological conditions in the first half of the year. The share buyback announced in March 2025 was completed for a total of R328m, and dividends of R1.4 billion were distributed to shareholders in the first half of 2025. 'We expect to continue to reserve about R800m at the end of June for the completion of our life extension projects, as well as the Lephalale Coal Bed Methane project. The capital allocation framework also seeks to cash collateralise our environmental liabilities over time; we have contributed a further R188m to the green fund in South Africa,' Smith stated. Net cash at 30 June 2025, excluding cash pertaining to the Ensham fixed price contracts yet to be finalised, was expected to range between R5.9bn and R6.1bn. Additionally, there were undrawn facilities of R3.2bn. Goedehoop and Isibonelo mines were approaching the end of their life of mine. As a result, a restructuring had begun at these operations. The interim results are anticipated to be released on 18 August 2025. Visit:

Thoko Didiza's stern warning to MPs over financial disclosures
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza says the failure by three deputy ministers and four MPs to declare their financial interests had the potential to erode public interest in Parliament. Image: Supplied National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza on Thursday rebuked three deputy ministers and four ordinary MPs for failing to declare their financial interests within the stipulated deadline last year. Didiza made Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala, Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Andries Nel, and Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa, along with MK Party MP and national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela, and ANC MPs Mluleki Dlelanga, Mzoleli Mrara, and Masetshego Mofokeng stand up like schoolchildren when reprimanding them at the start of the plenary sitting. Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Moropene Ramokgopa tendered her apology because she is on an international trip, but she will be reprimanded on her return to the House. Didiza rebuked the deputy ministers and MPs after the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests found that they did not disclose their financial and registrable interests by the due date on October 14, 2024. Next Stay Close ✕ She said the ethics code provided a set of values for members, which obligated them to annually declare their financial interest in a public register. 'This allows the public to confirm that no member may have been exposed to any conflict of interest. Honourable members, who are standing today, you have failed to disclose your financial interest for 2024 in due time.' Didiza said that if a member has missed the date, they shall be reprimanded as such and are still obliged to tender their financial interests. 'It does not mean that these members have not declared for 2024, but they were late in terms of the deadline. It is apparent from the committee report that you were provided a fair opportunity to present your records and not having done so, to adequately explain your failures,' she said. Didiza also said the actions by the affected deputy ministers and the MPs had the potential to erode public interest in Parliament. 'I just want to say this is unacceptable. It is also objectionable and deserving of serious consequences, as it has already been determined by the committee in terms of the fine that you have been given.' She noted that financial penalties have been imposed and that they will be implemented without delay. 'I trust, therefore, that this reprimand sends a message to all of us as members to live up to our obligations and ensure that we comply with the code.' Didiza reminded the MPs that Monday is the last day for next disclosures. 'Can I remind you again you do so without delays,' she said. 'This is not a matter that we really should be laughing about. It is important and serious for all of us. While we are reprimanding the members, who may not have done so in 2024, but it still requires consciousness, and we must attend to this matter as members,' Didiza said. A penalty of R10,000 each will be docked from the salaries of Zikalala, Hlengwa, Nel, Dlelanga, Ndhlela, Mrara, and Mofokeng for the offence imposed in breach of the ethics code.
