"You Better Turn Back": Israel Warns Greta Thunberg On Gaza-Bound Yacht
JERUSALEM: Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz told the military on Sunday to stop a charity boat carrying activists, including Sweden's Greta Thunberg, who are planning to defy an Israeli blockade and reach Gaza. Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the British-flagged Madleen yacht set sail from Sicily on June 6 and is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by Israel. "I instructed the IDF to act so that the Madleen ... does not reach Gaza," Katz said in a statement. "To the antisemitic Greta and her Hamas-propaganda-spouting friends, I say clearly: You'd better turn back, because you will not reach Gaza." Climate activist Thunberg said she joined the Madleen crew to "challenge Israel's illegal siege and escalating war crimes" in Gaza and highlight the urgent need for humanitarian aid. She has rejected previous Israeli accusations of antisemitism. Israel went to war with Hamas in October 2023 after the operatives launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing more 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. More than 54,000 Palestinians have died during the ongoing Israeli assault, according to Gaza health authorities, with much of the Palestinian territory reduced to rubble. The UN has warned that most of Gaza's 2.3 million population is at risk of famine. Katz said the blockade was essential to Israel's national security as it seeks to eliminate Hamas. "The State of Israel will not allow anyone to break the naval blockade on Gaza, whose primary purpose is to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hamas," he said. The Madleen is carrying a symbolic quantity of aid, including rice and baby formula, the FFC has said. FFC press officer Hay Sha Wiya said on Sunday the boat was currently some 160 nautical miles (296 km) from Gaza. "We are preparing for the possibility of interception," she said. Besides Thunberg, there are 11 other crew members aboard, including Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament. Israeli media have reported that the military plans to intercept the yacht before it reaches Gaza and escort it to the Israeli port of Ashdod. The crew would then be deported. In 2010, Israeli commandos killed 10 people when they boarded a Turkish ship, the Mavi Marmara, that was leading a small flotilla towards Gaza.

At Dhindsa's antim ardas, Jakhar bats for panthic unity: ‘Leave ego... else Punjab may see dark times again'
1 2 Bathinda: The 'antim ardas' of SAD leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa turned into a platform for advocating 'panthic' unity, with BJP state president Sunil Jakhar becoming the most vocal backer for a strong regional party, even as he stopped short of naming the Akali Dal. Jakhar devoted a significant part of his brief address to unity while speaking to the large gathering at Gurdwara Nankiana Sahib, Sangrur. "Maafi chahunga, meri jagah taan ni banndi magar masla asal virasat da hai, Punjab di virasat. Aethe bahut Punjab pakhi sakhshiatan virajmaan ne. Mai hath bann ke benati karda haan ke ik majboot, ikjut panthak party Punjab te kaum di lor nahi, desh di bhi jarurat hai, sabh nu apne haume, vikhreve, matvedh chad ke virasat nu saambh lena chahida. Aeh na hove ke virasat da intkal koi hor apne naam chada jaaye ate Punjab ate kaum nu pher maara sama dekhna pave (though it is not my domain, as it is the matter of adopting the legacy of Punjab. As many pro-Punjab personalities are present here, with folded hands, I request that a strong and united panthic party is not only needed for panth or Punjab, but it is also needed for the country. Every leader, leaving behind ego and differences of opinion, needs to come forward to adopt the legacy, or someone else may inherit it Panth and Punjab may again have to witness dark times again)," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Skype Phone Alternative Undo Divisions have been witnessed in the Shiromani Akali Dal in the past when Dhindsa, Ranjit Singh Brahampura, and Rattan Singh Ajnala developed differences with SAD chief Sukhbir Badal and parted ways. After factionalism in the Akali Dal, it reached rock bottom in political battles in assembly and parliamentary elections. A pitch for unity was also made by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who said that he met Dhindsa two days before his demise and the latter too told him to unite. "It is the need of the hour for all to come together," he said. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami also stressed the need for unity between warring groups. Former Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh also emphasised the need for unity and stated that a strong regional panthic party was direly needed to survive. Akali MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali also raised his voice for unity. Dhindsa's son, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, echoed similar sentiments. He said his father wanted a strong Shiromani Akali Dal, and he will continue working for it. Jakhar hade made a similar statement at the antim ardas of former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and advocated for an alliance between Akali Dal and BJP.
