Former Australian Test batter and cricket commentator Keith Stackpole has passed away
Tributes are flowing for former Test batter turned long-time commentator Keith Stackpole after he passed away aged 84.
A Victorian legend, Stackpole played 43 Tests between 1966 and 1974 before becoming a well known and respected television and radio commentator.
Stackpole made his Test debut in Adelaide in 1966 and went on to score seven centuries among his 2801 runs with a high score of 207 made against the old enemy, England, in Brisbane in 1970.
He finished his Test career with a pair of ducks against New Zealand in 1974.
He played alongside some of the game's greatest players including Ian Chappell and Dennis Lillee, was vice-captain of his country for a time was good enough to be named Wisden's Cricketer of the Year in 1973.
After retiring from cricket in 1974, due to a life-changing back injury Stackpole forged a lengthy career in the media, joining the commentary team for Kerry Packer's rebel World Series Cricket.
He also commentated on radio and had a newspaper column in Melbourne.
Stackpole was awarded an MBE in 1974 for services to cricket.
He is survived by his wife Pat and children Peter, Tony and Angela.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese opens Seven Network's new Melbourne HQ
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has officially opened Seven's brand new, state-of-the-art Melbourne headquarters in one of the CBD's hottest locations. The opening, on Wednesday night, saw the launch of Seven's entire Melbourne operation at the stunning Melbourne Quarter Tower in Collins Street. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, Sport and Communications Minister Anika Wells, Seven West Media Chairman Kerry Stokes AC, SGH managing director and CEO Ryan Stokes AO and Seven West Media managing director and CEO Jeff Howard were also on hand for the opening. 'Seven is part of the fabric of Australian life — informing us, entertaining us, and helping shape the national conversation,' Mr Albanese said. 'This new purpose-built Melbourne headquarters is a major investment in the future of Australian media. It's not just a home for journalism and unforgettable sporting moments, but also a symbol of innovation and ambition. 'Congratulations to everyone involved. Signs point to Reid remaining at Eagles in 2026
West Coast's highly sought young star Harley Reid is leaning towards remaining at the Eagles in 2026 rather than seeking a trade back home to Victoria. Reid, who has been subject to constant speculation – and interest from Victorian clubs since his outstanding debut season in 2024 – is said to be more likely to remain in Perth and play for West Coast next year, according to rival clubs and industry sources who spoke to this masthead on Wednesday. Reid is contracted for 2026, under the AFL's three-year mandatory minimum for first round picks, which means West Coast has a hold on him in any case. Of course, the prospect of Reid moving home to Victoria when his contract expires at the end of 2026 remains a live possibility. While he is more inclined to stay than leave, this is not a definitive position and it cannot be completely ruled out that he might seek a trade. The likelihood that Reid, the 2023 No.1 draft pick, will stay in Perth creates a series of dominoes for rival clubs, given that relatively few were well-placed to satisfy West Coast in a trade this year. Richmond and Essendon would arguably be the Victorian clubs with the best draft capital if Reid was willing to play for those clubs, and both are in the throes of rebuilding or replenishing their lists with youth rather than contending for the premiership. Of the Victorian clubs in contention mode, Geelong and Collingwood do not have first round choices this year in the national draft, while Hawthorn have Carlton's first round pick. Melbourne and Carlton, thus, are without first round picks, although the Blues would gain a top-10 choice, based on current ladder position, if they lost free agent Tom de Koning to St Kilda, who have offered the ruckman a staggering deal worth close to $1.7 million a season over a long-term.
