UCLA cruises to Super Regional topping UCSB and outscore opposition 31-2 in regional weekend
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alexis Ramirez went 3 for 4 and drove in five runs and UCLA cruised to the NCAA Super Regionals with a 12-1 dismantling of UC Santa Barbara on Sunday in the Los Angeles Regional.
The No. 9-seeded Bruins (52-10) travel to face eighth-seeded South Carolina next weekend. UCLA is chasing its ninth Women's College World Series berth in the last decade. In going 3-0 in this weekend's regional play, UCLA outscored it opponents 31-2. UCLA started the weekend with a 9-1 win over the Gauchos (36-26) on Friday.
Ramirez started the hit parade driving in the game's first two runs. UCLA scored four runs in the first and second innings, three in the fourth and the game was mercy ruled after the Gauchos came up empty in the bottom of the fifth.
Jessica Clements, Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery all homered for UCLA. Clements and Grant each drove in a pair of runs.
Taylor Tinsley moved her season record to 14-4 pitching four innings, surrendering just three hits and one unearned run. She struck out six and didn't give up a walk.
Malaya Johnson (24-12) took the loss for UC Santa Barbara giving up six hits and six earned runs in an inning of work.
Ainsley Waddell singled to center field to score Alexa Sams in the bottom of the second for the Gauchos' run.

Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes is officially set to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss at least the remainder of the 2025 season. This news comes three days after Burnes sought a second opinion on the inflammation in his right elbow from Los Angeles-based doctor Neal El Attrache. Arizona signed Burnes to a $210 million, six-year contract before the season, and the 30-year-old has been very durable over the past several years. He's made at least 28 starts in every season since he won the 2021 National League Cy Young Award for the Milwaukee Brewers. Burnes' injury is yet another problem in a season that has already seen the D-backs go just 31-31 with a negative run differential, putting them in fourth place, 6.5 games back in a competitive NL West and 3.5 back of a wild card spot. Arizona missed the 2024 postseason due to losing the tiebreaker for the final wild card spot to the Mets. The D-backs called up left-hander Tommy Henry to take Burnes' spot on the roster. Tom Rafferty, an offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys, dies at 70
WINDSOR, Colo. (AP) — Tom Rafferty, an offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl and played with two Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman over 14 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, has died. He was 70. Rafferty died Thursday in Windsor, Colorado, where he had been hospitalized since early May following a stroke, his daughter, Rachel Powers, told The Dallas Morning News. A year after getting drafted out of Penn State, Rafferty's first season as a starter was at right guard in 1977, which ended with the Cowboys' 27-10 victory over Denver in Super Bowl 12. He played the same position a year later when the Cowboys lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-31 in the title game. After a move to center, Rafferty threw one of the key blocks on Tony Dorsett's record 99-yard touchdown run in a 31-27 loss at Minnesota on Jan. 3, 1983. Dallas had 10 men on the field for that famous play. Rafferty's final season was Aikman's rookie year in 1989, when he started eight games at center for a 1-15 team. Arizona Diamondback right-hander Corbin Burnes will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery next week, and his recovery could cause him to miss most or all of next season as well, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday. The Diamondbacks placed Burnes on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with elbow inflammation after he exited Sunday's start against the Washington Nationals in the top of the fifth after experiencing tightness in his throwing elbow. Burnes signed a six-year, $210 million contract in December. He went 3-2 in his first season with the Diamondbacks with a 2.66 ERA. He came to Arizona as one of the league's most durable pitchers, with at least 28 starts in each of the past four seasons.
