Marcus Monzo's thirst for enlightenment took him to India and the Amazon jungle but ended in a rampage that killed Daniel Anjorin after his mind was warped by powerful psychedelic drugs
The man behind the Hainault sword attack that killed a 14-year-old schoolboy was today sentenced to life in prison witha minimum of 40 years, but prior to his bloody rampage he had been on a spiritual quest.
Marcus Monzo could barely contain his excitement as he filmed himself trying out his new Katana sword. His small ginger cat, named Wizard, sat at his feet as his owner described the two-foot blade as "frigging sexy". Less than a month later Wizard would become Monzo's first victim after the drug-crazed swordsman came to believe the cat was about to cause Armageddon. He strangled, skinned and deboned his pet with the intention of cooking and eating the animal. But instead he went on a blood-soaked rampage, killing 14–year-old Daniel Anjorin and attempting to murder three others in Hainault, north east London, on April 30, 2024.

Over the previous decade Monzo had been on a spiritual quest that took him to India and deep into the Amazon jungle. But instead of reaching enlightenment, he had become increasingly isolated as his drug-taking fuelled a growing obsession with conspiracy theories and swords.
Marcus Arduini Monzo was born on April 11, 1988, in a small village in the municipality of Astorga in southern Brazil. His mother owned a clothing business and he would ride horses in the countryside. Monzo studied business administration at university before the family moved to New Hampshire in the US.
In 2013, he relocated to London and found work in a pub. Monzo began learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu and joined a gym in east London where he became a blue belt. His brother, Eduardo, told his Old Bailey trial: "He was a healthy, popular guy, he had no problems." But Monzo had also started smoking cannabis, which eventually became a £100-a-day addiction.
He also experimented with LSD, magic mushrooms and large quantities of ayahuasca, a powerful hallucinogen taken by tribes in the Amazon. Eduardo said he became a "completely different person" after meeting an online yoga guru in 2017 and spending time in an Indian ashram, a community where members devote themselves to spiritual practices.
Eduardo said: "Marcus's behaviour started to change. He didn't want to be contacted by me any more." Four years ago Monzo took large amounts of ayahuasca in northern Brazil while staying with indigenous Amazonian tribes.

"He said the drink was good for him and connects you to the spiritual world,' Eduardo said. "I believe he was drinking it quite a lot." Monzo's online postings in the year before the rampage had shown a fascination with violence, far-right extremism, misogyny and incel ideology.
An incel, which stands for involuntary celibate, is a member of an online community of men who consider themselves unable to attract women and have hostile views towards them. He was also interested in toxic influencer Andrew Tate and liked posts on X (Twitter) which praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

At his Old Bailey trial, Monzo had told jurors he believed the world was flat and that the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York was "probably" a conspiracy theory. This flat earth belief was also reflected in various montages and memes on X. One post stated: "How did I become a flat earther? I tried debunking it.." Monzo responded to a news report on the flat earther epidemic by claiming on social media that this was a positive as it would spark curiosity over the issue.
In a reference to another conspiracy, Monzo posted: "I live in London. Here everybody will agree that the city is GREY. And the reason is BECAUSE they spray the sky ALL DAY, EVERY DAY". The chemtrail conspiracy theory asserts that governments or other malicious actors are engaged in a secret programme to disseminate toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.

Over the period of a year, Monzo's X account also reflected an interest in an Indian yogi guru and soil improvement campaigns as well as controversial public figures such as Elon Musk, David Icke and Tate. Among the various conspiracy theories Monzo liked or interacted with were claims of CIA brainwashing, that the Titanic disaster was no accident, and the supposed existence of giants and "ancient AI".
He also shared anti-vaccination misinformation including a video claiming close proximity to those who received the Covid-19 jab would result in illness. Monzo's social media accounts also underlined his fascination with traditional Japanese samurai and katana swords. On TikTok, his FreeKingMark profile described him as a mystic, musician, martial artist, jedi and a ninja. On Pinterest, the FreeKingMark account had saved dozens of images featuring figures with samurai swords and other weapons.

Less than two weeks before the attack, Monzo uploaded a video of himself to an Instagram account called 'FreeKingMark' repeatedly punching a bag in the gym. Another photo, posted on January 25 last year, showed him smiling with two thumbs up and a number of medals from a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition around his neck.
Monzo's boxing coach, who asked not to be named, said that he was a recluse who struggled to fit in. On the former delivery driver, he said: "He was a bit different, but he was a nice guy. As far as I know, he did not have any friends."

On Wednesday, Monzo was found guilty by a jury at the Old Bailey of Daniel's murder, three charges of attempted murder, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article relating to a kitchen knife. He was cleared of one count of attempted murder but found guilty of the lesser offence of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Monzo, who showed no emotion as the verdicts were read out, previously admitted having the samurai sword used to kill Daniel and a katana sword found in his van.
Monzo had denied Daniel's murder, and the attempted murders of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry De Los Rios Polania and Pc Yasmin Margaret Mechem-Whitfield, as well as wounding Inspector Moloy Campbell with intent. He also denied aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article relating to a kitchen knife. Monzo previously admitted two counts of having an offensive weapon, namely two swords.
Today, Mr Justice Bennathan sentenced Monzo to life in prison, with a minimum term of 38 years and 309 days. Sentencing, Mr Justice Bennathan said: "Over 20 minutes - members of the public were attacked, police officers were gravely injured, a couple were terrified in their own home and a clever, talented young boy was killed.
"You, Marcus, did all of that. Daniel was a clever boy, he was gifted musically and played a variety of sports well. His loss is devastating to his parents, his brother and sister and his grandparents. I am very conscious no sentence I can pass can even begin to temper Daniel's family's grief."
He added that his sentence was mitigated by his "previous good character" but that it was limited by his use of "unlawful drugs over the years".

Hainault trial sentencing as it happened: Marcus Monzo jailed to life for sword attack that killed Daniel Anjorin, 14

We're ending our live coverage That's all from us at the Old Bailey, where Marcus Monzo was sentenced to life behind bars. He will only get his first chance at parole in 38 years and 309 days. The 37-year-old was found guilty of murdering Daniel Anjorin, 14, and the attempted murder of three others during a 20-minute rampage with a samurai sword in Hainault on 30 April last year. To catch up on today's key developments, browse through the key points above - or scroll through this quick recap: Monzo was told by the judge "you must have known he was a boy" before he swung his sword at Daniel - sentencing him to at least 40 years in total, minus time already served on remand; Daniel's family - in a statement read by his father - said no family should endure what they have, but added they will honour his life "though the love and happiness" he brought; Monzo was "clearly psychotic", the judge said, as he praised the courage of police officers who approached him that day; He did show "some remorse" in a letter written for the judge, while his defence team said he would "turn back the clock" if he could; But survivors of his attack called for justice in their victim impact statements, detailing severe physical and emotional harm from Monzo's sword attack. Watch below: The moment Monzo is jailed for life 'We carry Daniel's light even in this dark time', says Anjorin family Daniel Anjorin was taken from his loved ones in a way "no family should have to endure", his father says. Dr Ebenezer Anjorin tells reporters his son had "so much potential ahead". "He was gifted academically, was kind and had a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him," he adds. "We carry that light with us even in this dark time." Speaking briefly alongside Daniel's mum, Grace Anjorin, he also says they "honour Daniel's memory". "Not in the shadow of this tragedy," he adds. "But through the love and happiness he brought to us, and to all those who knew him. Thank you." Daniel Anjorin's father giving statement for family now Dr Ebenezer Anjorin, Daniel's dad, is now giving a statement to the media outside court. He's speaking on behalf of the family, after his son's killer Marcus Monzo was sentenced to life in prison. Watch in the live stream at the top of this page - we'll also provide text updates here. Watch: How the sword attack murder unfolded Marcus Arduini Monzo murdered 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin and attacked five others. Here's how that morning unfolded, from crashing a van into a pedestrian to his eventual arrest. As we've just been reporting, he will now spend a minimum of nearly 39 years in prison. Warning: This footage includes disturbing scenes Judge: Daniel's father showed composure that most of us would find impossible The judge said Daniel Anjorin's father's witness statement (see 12.57 post) was "a hard read, so heartbreaking are its contents". Mr Justice Bennathan continued: "Daniel was a clever boy. He was gifted musically, and played a variety of sports well. He was a happy child, and his loss is obviously devastating to his parents, and his brother and sister, and his grandparents." He also praised the conduct of Daniel's father, Dr Ebenezer Anjorin, throughout the trial. He said he acted in a "calm, dignified manner" and showed "a composure that most of us would find impossible". "I am very conscious that no sentence I pass can even begin to temper Daniel's family's grief," he said just before handing down his sentence. Judge said Monzo was 'clearly psychotic' and praised police courage Just before he passed his sentence, the judge told Marcus Monzo he was "clearly psychotic" during the attack. "You choosing to consume cannabis was the dominant cause of the state you were in that day. You knew it made you paranoid and could lead to panic attacks," he said. He said PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield - who he seriously injured with several "savage blows" - acted "totally fearlessly" to try to stop him hurting others. He said PC Cameron King, who had been with PC Mechem-Whitfield when she was stabbed, placed himself between her and the attacker, "probably saving her life". He added that Inspector Moloy Campbell - one of the other first responding officers - showed "great bravery and leadership, tried to disarm or subdue you with his baton, only to be caught by a powerful swing of your sword, leaving him with a deep chopping wound to his right hand". "Soon afterwards, you were stopped and detained by a number of police officers using tasers that finally brought you under control," he added. He said all officers at the scene "behaved with exemplary courage and put their lives on the line to try to protect the public" and should be "proud". Video shows 'extraordinary bravery' of officers confronting Monzo In his sentencing remarks moments ago, the judge praised officers who responded with "exemplary courage" to the attack last year and confronted Marcus Monzo. The Metropolitan Police commissioner echoed that message before today's sentencing, hailing "extraordinary bravery". Sir Mark Rowley praised their "relentless courage" in a statement shared alongside a video of the moment officers approached Monzo. It shows them chasing after him, before one officer is attacked while another shouts, "police officer stabbed". Other officers are seen confronting Monzo, before it shows him being put in handcuffs. "Many will remember the events that unfolded in Hainault in April last year and the shock waves that they sent through communities," Sir Mark said. "The two elements of this case which drew such attention were, of course, the horrendous killing of Daniel, but second to that, the most extraordinary bravery of our officers who responded that day." Watch the police force's video below Life-changing injuries Police on the scene were "desperate to protect the community", Sir Mark said, and ran "towards an erratic and violent man" who had just killed a young child and injured others. PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield was hit with "extreme force" three times with the 60cm long blade as she chased Monzo through alleyways and residential properties. Inspector Moloy Campbell tried to detain Monzo in a car park - he suffered a slash wound to his hand. Sir Mark said two officers received "life-changing injuries". "And despite seeing their colleagues suffer those injuries, additional officers, without hesitation, continued to pursue the suspect, using every tactic available to stop this rampage," he added. Monzo jailed for life Marcus Monzo has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 40 years. Mr Justice Bennathan told him, including time he has already served, he will be in prison for 38 years and 309 days before he is eligible for parole. "Mr Monzo can go to jail," the judge says. It is possible he will never be released. After that time, he may be eligible for parole, but much will depend on his behaviour and remorse until then. He will be at least 75 at that point. You must have known he was a child, judge tells Monzo The judge describes a "peaceful" setting before the attack on 30 April last year. He tells Marcus Monzo - who is in court wearing a bright green hooded top and light grey sweatpants - he caused a "devastating" scene. Monzo killed a "clever, talented, much-loved" young boy - Daniel Anjorin, 14 - with a "savage blow" of a sword. "You, Marcus Monzo, did all of that," he says. He says Monzo drove to Hainault in a "clearly psychotic state", and first tried to murder pedestrian Donato Iwule. "You then must have seen Daniel Anjorin," he says. "You must have known he was a child, a schoolboy. You came up behind him and struck him in the neck." The judge also pays tribute to a heroic passerby, Nathan Hutchinson, who tried to help Daniel, before he was "forced back" by Monzo. Judge now delivering sentencing remarks The judge is now in place and has started to give his sentencing remarks, which you can watch live in the stream at the top of this page. He will soon reveal Marcus Monzo's jail time - stay with us for updates.

India markets regulator says probing 'pump and dump' instances

June 27 (Reuters) - India's markets regulator said on Friday that it found "incriminating evidence" as a part of its ongoing investigation into "pump and dump" practices involving certain stocks. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said it conducted search and seizure operations in multiple locations this month, but did not name any specific sites or companies involved. 'Pump and dump' refers to a stock manipulation practice in which market participants artificially inflate share prices through continuous purchases, luring other investors to buy in, and then sell their shares at higher prices to realise profits. Local business news website Moneycontrol reported last week, citing sources, that SEBI carried out raids in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and the northern hub of Gurugram to crack down on a pump and dump scheme worth more than 3 billion rupees ($35.1 million) The raids reportedly involved 15 to 20 shell firms. At least two listed agro-tech companies and their promoters are allegedly at the helm of the network, according to the Moneycontrol report. ($1 = 85.4610 Indian rupees)

Club World Cup star's WAG fumes after run-in with police inside stadium

Karoline Lima, the girlfriend of Flamengo star Leo Pereira, was left fuming during the Brazilian side's 1-1 draw against Los Angeles FC in the FIFA Club World Cup but not for the reason you may think Influencer Karoline Lima was left fuming with police after watching her footballer boyfriend Leo Pereira play for Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup. The Brazilian WAG - who has almost six million followers on Instagram - has been a regular attendee of the matches in the United States. After watching the Brazilian side draw 1-1 with Los Angeles FC at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando which saw Flamengo claim top spot in Group D, pipping Chelsea by a point, controversy ensued inside the arena. ‌ Taking to her Instagram stories, Lima revealed that she was almost thrown out of the stadium by US police who approached her after the full-time whistle blew. According to the authorities, the influencer was not wearing a wristband that allows access in a section of the venue which is reserved for the players' families. ‌ "You don't understand, but I almost got kicked out," she said in the video. "When the game ends, Leonardo asks us to wait there so he can talk to us where we're sitting. Then out of nowhere, a bunch of police arrived, saying things in English, right?" Lima added that she attempted to explain that she was in fact family as she continued: "And I said, 'No, my friends, calm down. Let's talk. I'm family'. They said you had to have a wristband. All the family members have wristbands. Then the confusion started, everyone saying: 'Yes, she's family'. It was a big deal." Despite the stressful ordeal, the situation was resolved as Lima was eventually given a wristband. The drama at the Camping World Stadium wasn't an isolated incident for the influencer who also almost lost her bag after an argument with security prior to kick-off. The red heart-shaped bag, which has been labelled as lucky by fans due to her holding it during several Flamengo wins, was almost confiscated before the clash against LAFC due to bags not being allowed in stadiums in the United States. "The woman wanted to confiscate my heart-shaped bag," Lima revealed. "Here in the United States, they don't allow bags into stadiums. In fact, they have a size chart for permitted bags, and it's really small. I arrived here, and the woman wanted to confiscate my bag. I said, 'No, love. It will not be touched.' I took my bag and left. Here it is!" ‌ The bag certainly worked its magic as Flamengo clinched a vital point through Wallace Yan's 86th minute equaliser to ensure top spot in the group as they progress to the knockout stages of the global competition. The Brazilian giants - who defeated the Blues 3-1 in their second game of the tournament - face a tough test against Bayern Munich on Sunday. A quarter-final clash against the winner of Inter Miami vs Paris Saint-Germain awaits should they get past the German champions.
