Paris: Two people died and a police officer was in a coma after nationwide celebrations in France following Paris Saint-Germain's historic Champions League victory, authorities said on Sunday.
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the city of Dax during a PSG street party after Saturday night's final in Munich, the national police service said. A man was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both are being investigated.
Meanwhile, a police officer was hit by fireworks in Coutance in north-west France and placed in an artificial coma because of serious eye injuries, the national police service said.
More than 500 people were arrested in the celebrations, which were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas.
Paris Saint-Germain clinched the Champions League with a 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the German city of Munich, marking their first triumph in Europe's premier club soccer competition.
At the top of the Champs-Elysees, a water cannon was used to protect the Place de l'Etoile, near the landmark Arc de Triomphe after a large crowd not watching the match tried to push through a barrier to make contact with police.
By 2am on Sunday (local time), some 294 arrests had been made in Paris, including 30 people who broke into a shoe shop on the Champs-Elysees. Two cars were set alight close to the club's stadium, Parc des Princes, police added.
At the Place de la Bastille, there were joyous scenes as fans climbed onto the base of the famous column, singing, dancing and letting off flares, while those around joined in.

Madeleine McCann: Portugal police launch new search for missing girl

Portuguese police have launched a new search for Madeleine McCann in Portugal's Algarve region where the British three-year-old disappeared in 2007, following a request from German authorities, the country's investigative Judicial Police says. In a statement, the PJ said it was executing a European Investigation Order on behalf of the public prosecutor's office in the German city of Braunschweig, which in 2022 formally identified German citizen Christian Brueckner as an official suspect in McCann's disappearance. It added that 'a wide range of investigations, namely search warrants' would be carried out between June 2-6 in Portugal's Municipality of Lagos and all evidence seized would be handed over to Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). The search for traces of the child's body will focus on an area between Praia da Luz, a civil parish belonging to Lagos, and one of the houses where Brueckner lived when McCann disappeared 18 years ago, according to news reports by CNN Portugal and German newspaper Bild. Braunschweig prosecutors told Reuters 'criminal procedural measures' related to the McCann case were taking place in Portugal involving the BKA and Portuguese law enforcement but did not provide further details. London's Metropolitan Police said they were aware of searches carried out by the BKA in Portugal, adding the force was not present there but would 'support our international colleagues where necessary'. German police said in June 2020 that McCann was assumed dead and that Brueckner was likely responsible. Brueckner has denied any involvement and has not been charged with any crime related to the case. The convicted child abuser and drug dealer is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve. The last search for McCann was carried out in May 2023, when the police combed an inland reservoir in the Algarve but did not find anything.

Police to launch fresh searches in Portugal this week for Madeleine McCann who disappeared in 2007 on family holiday

Police are set to conduct new searches this week for British toddler Madeleine McCann who disappeared while on a family holiday more than 18 years ago. A German prosecutor has requested police begin a "broad range" of searches in the southern Portuguese area of Lagos where she was last seen alive in 2007. Portuguese police will take charge - with the assistance of their German counterparts - and will scour the coastal and popular holiday location from Tuesday. German investigators had named Christian Brueckner as a suspect. He has lived in Portugal, including in the Praia da Luz area where the then-three-year-old was last seen, but he had never been charged. He has denied any involvement. Brueckner is currently in jail for raping a 72-year-old woman. The last time searches were carried out in relation to Madeleine was two years ago when investigators scoured a reservoir in Silves, not far from the Lagos region. Portuguese Police conducted a three-day search of the Barragem do Arade reservoir and took away pieces of material to be examined further. Christian Wolters, a German prosecutor for the city of Braunschweig, at the time said the items will be evaluated in the coming days and weeks. "Whether individual items actually have a connection to the Madeleine McCann case cannot yet be said. The investigations conducted here in Braunschweig against the 46-year-old suspect are expected to continue for a long time," he said. Police brought in sniffer dogs, heavy machinery and pickaxes to dig up and comb the reservoir after receiving "certain tips" relating to the case. The reservoir is about 50 kilometres from where Madeleine vanished. She was asleep in a room with her twin brothers at the Praia da Luz resort. Her parents Gerry and Kate McCann went to dinner and returned to find she had vanished. They marked the 18-year disappearance in May, saying "the years appear to be passing even more quickly" and vowing to leave "no stone unturned" to find their child. "No matter how near or far she is, she continues to be right here with us, every day, but especially on her special day," they said in a statement. "We continue to 'celebrate' her as the very beautiful and unique person she is. "We miss her."
