Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas made a big announcement at our Hideout show Thursday night.
Why it matters: Pappas is widely rumored to be planning a mayoral run and told WGN last week she thinks "the city needs a grey-haired grandmother."
The latest: The 75-year-old curator of Chicago's best free Christmas tree show, a prize-winning baton twirler and star of the county's most prized calendar, tells Axios she is now… a professional senior model.
What she's saying: "I went on the internet and was fascinated by Elon Musk's [model] mother and I'm like, 'Really? I look better than her,'" Pappas tells Axios.
"So I got all dressed up, took a copy of my calendar and a bunch of photos from Victor Skrebneski's studio where I'm lying on a couch in phony fur jackets to Lily's Talent Agency and I signed up."
What's next: Pappas also announced the fall release of her biography, a new report from her office on tax increment financing and a video series documenting her visits to cultural institutions like the Balzekas Museum, Saturday Polish school classes and the Mongolian consulate.

Republicans worry DOGE cuts will sink them in Virginia governor's race
Republicans are increasingly worried that budget cuts by Elon Musk 's DOGE could cost them dearly in November's vote for Virginia governor — an early electoral test of President Trump 's policies. Why it matters: Virginia has one of the highest percentages of federal employees in the country — more than 5% of the state's workforce by some estimates — and Republicans' internal polls are starting to show the damage from tens of thousands of federal layoffs. Zoom in: The University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center has projected that 32,000 jobs could be lost in the state this year, many of them federal positions. "Northern Virginia is filled with people who suffered the consequences of the DOGE cuts, and it's hard to see them being sympathetic to a Republican candidate who supports the DOGE cuts," said Whit Ayers, a veteran Republican pollster. "I suspect this will be an albatross around the neck of every Republican candidate this year," said Virginia Republican Bill Bolling, a former lieutenant governor. By the numbers: A private poll done for the campaign of a statewide Republican candidate suggested that just 39% of voters had a favorable view of DOGE. Nearly half of voters surveyed said they knew of someone impacted by the DOGE cuts, according to results shared with Axios. The poll showed Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears trailing former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) by single digits, outside the margin of error. Between the lines: DOGE could especially hurt Earle-Sears' campaign for governor in Northern Virginia and Norfolk, sections of the state where huge segments of the population are federal workers or have jobs tied to the government. Those areas played a role in Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin's win in 2021, when he cut into Democratic margins and improved on the GOP's performance in 2017. (Virginia governors can't succeed themselves, so Youngkin isn't allowed to run again.) The D.C. suburbs of Northern Virginia are home to upper- and middle-income voters, many of whom have ties to the government and are particularly likely to vote. Even non-federal workers in those areas could be impacted by DOGE, given the role federal funding plays in driving the local economy. Flashback: Republicans already are comparing DOGE's potential impact on Virginia's 2025 election to that of the GOP-led government shutdown of 2013, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of government workers being placed on unpaid leave. Democrats swept the state's highest offices that year — an outcome many GOP strategists blamed on the shutdown. "Washington, D.C., politics have long shaped the outcome of Virginia off-year elections," Virginia-based GOP strategist Jimmy Keady said in a text to Axios. "With over 230,000 Virginians working in or around the federal government, especially in Northern Virginia and Norfolk, any proposal that threatens those jobs — like DOGE — turns into a high-stakes issue," he added. The other side: Democrats are making DOGE a centerpiece of their election playbook. Virginia's Democratic Party has been running ads highlighting Earle-Sears' comments accusing the media of overhyping the impact of DOGE cuts. Other Democratic commercials are linking Republican state legislative candidates to Musk. Behind the scenes: Youngkin has taken steps to try to soften the blow to the state's federal workers, launching a " Virginia Has Jobs" initiative aimed at helping laid-off workers find new positions. Reality check: Republicans say Earle-Sears has an uphill climb, even without DOGE. In every election since 1977 besides one, the state has elected a governor from the opposition party to the sitting president. Top GOP officials — including some close to Trump — have criticized Earle-Sears and her campaign. Chris LaCivita, Trump's 2024 co-campaign manager and a longtime player in Virginia politics, has called her team " amateurs." What they're saying: Peyton Vogel, a spokesperson for Earle-Sears, rejected the notion that federal cutbacks could hurt the GOP candidate.

Original Sin: how Team Biden wished away his decline until it was too late
Joe Biden mistook his victory in 2020 for a sweeping, FDR-like mandate. Officially, that was before age and decay caught up. Horrifically, for Democrats, in June 2024 a debacle of a debate against Donald Trump confirmed what Washington insiders had only dared whisper but what most voters had known: Biden should not have sought re-election. Less than a month later, he was out, replaced as Democratic nominee by his vice-president, Kamala Harris. Now, Trump runs wild and Biden's legacy is buried beneath a heap of unkind reporting – and bouquets of sympathy, after news of his cancer. 'It was an abomination,' one prominent Democratic strategist is quoted as saying by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson. 'He stole an election from the Democratic party; he stole it from the American people.' Tapper and Thompson concur. Over 350 engrossing pages, they deliver a stinging judgment, trenchantly written and well-sourced. The two reporters spoke to about 200 people, including members of Congress, White House staffers and campaign insiders. Some reportedly sounded the alarm about Biden's mental acuity and desperate efforts by aides to hide his deterioration. The alarm was not heeded. Tapper is CNN's lead DC anchor and chief Washington correspondent. Thompson is a national political correspondent for Axios and a CNN contributor. His speech at the recent White House Correspondents' Association dinner was one for the ages. 'President Biden's decline and its cover-up by the people around him is a reminder that every White House, regardless of party, is capable of deception,' Thompson said. 'We, myself included, missed a lot of this story. And some people trust us less because of it. We bear some responsibility for faith in the media being at such lows.' Original Sin begins with a bang. Its first chapter is titled 'He Fucked Us', from an on-record quote by David Plouffe, senior adviser to the Harris campaign, before that manager of Barack Obama's 2008 winning effort. 'We got so screwed by Biden as a party,' Plouffe says. Harris was a 'great soldier', but the race was 'a fucking nightmare. … 'And it's all Biden … He totally fucked us.' Try putting that toothpaste back in the tube. On the other hand, Plouffe doesn't reveal what Harris knew about Biden's fitness and when she knew it. Biden loyalists return the favor, too, the authors write: 'Many … felt that Harris didn't put in the work and was also just not a very nice person. Some quietly expressed buyer's remorse: They should have picked [Gretchen] Whitmer,' the Democratic governor of Michigan. Tapper and Thompson report cold political facts. In 2020, identity politics played an outsize role in Biden's VP pick. 'It boils down to whether he has a Hispanic woman or a Black woman,' Harry Reid, the former Senate Democratic leader, said then. Tapper and Thompson lay bare a sense of betrayal. 'The presidency requires someone who can perform at 2am during an emergency,' they write. 'Cabinet secretaries in [Biden's] own administration told us that by 2024, he could not be relied upon for this.' Yet, Biden and his minions made sure to clear the field. The representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, Biden's only challenger among elected officials, never had a prayer. Governors stayed on the sidelines. Tapper and Thompson tell us one senior White House aide left because he or she didn't think Biden should run again. Biden had been walled off from staff to shield his decline. 'I love Joe Biden,' the unnamed aide continues. 'When it comes to decency, there are few in politics like him. Still, it was a disservice to the country and to the party for his family and advisers to allow him to run again.' That ranks as an understatement. The cover of Original Sin shows Biden with hands covering his eyes. The former president, his family and his closest advisers – known as the 'politburo' here – dwelt in a world of alternative facts. 'The Bidens' greatest strength is living in their own reality,' a source tells Tapper and Thompson. 'And Biden himself is gifted at creating it: Beau isn't going to die. Hunter's sobriety is stable … Joe always tells the truth. Joe cares more about his family than his own ambition … They stick to the narrative and repeat it.' To quote Lewis Carroll: 'I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true.' Biden's decline was not sudden, according to Tapper and Thompson. The signs were there years ago: 'During an eight-day, grueling bus tour in Iowa in December 2019, Biden gave his aides pause. While doing prep, he struggled to remember the name of longtime aide Mike Donilon. 'You know, you know,' he said, groping for it.' Donilon had worked with Biden for nearly 40 years. It should have been time to start worrying. Cover-up and denial are foundational to the Biden saga. This week brought Biden's bad diagnosis. 'He did not develop [metastatic prostate cancer] in the last 100, 200 days,' Zeke Emanuel, a doctor, told MSNBC on Monday. 'He had it while he was president. He probably had it at the start of his presidency, in 2021 … I don't think there's any disagreement about that.' Emanuel's brother, Rahm, was Biden's ambassador to Japan, and before that chief of staff to Obama. Democrats must address such self-inflicted wounds. Disapproval of Trump may be all they need to retake the House next year. But reckoning and redirection will be needed to recapture the White House. The party's brand circles the drain. Former Ring Of Honor Star Announces His Retirement
A former Ring of Honor star has chosen to hang up the boots. Brian Milonas, best known for his tag team, The Bouncers, with the Beer City Bruiser, has decided that it's time for him to retire. Milonas took to social media this morning to announce his retirement from pro wrestling in a very lengthy statement, tweeting out: Advertisement 'Sometimes in life the mind wants something the body just isn't capable of. Since I was a little boy professional wrestling has been something I've been passionate about. From watching the stars of the 80s all the way through till now I have loved professional wrestling. As an adult the pursuit of a career in pro wrestling has been my singular focus. Starting at age 19, I have dedicated so much time, effort and energy into making this crazy dream happen. While I fell short of my ultimate goal of becoming a WWE Superstar, I am very proud of my resume. I've had great times and made great friends along the way. My only regret is not stopping more in the moments to enjoy the journey. Today I say goodbye to the pursuit of pro wrestling as my life. I say goodbye to performing in the ring. As it turns out my last match took place on February 22, 2024. Nearly 23 years of being in the ring and performing has been one of the greatest honors of my life. From the Polish American Veteran's Club in Lowell, MA all the way to Madison Square Garden in New York City. What a ride. Thank you to the fans who have supported me these last two decades.
