Fake gun could have led to a bad end for metro-east teen, police chief says
Cahokia Heights police made three arrests since Saturday that resulted in criminal charges and weapons seizures.
Two of the arrests involved juveniles, said Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas Trice, who had been in the job for less than a week.
'We want (people) to know that we will not tolerate it. We are going to be doing proactive policing and anyone who is caught with an unauthorized gun will face the consequences,' Trice said. We are going to make the streets safe for our citizens and our visitors.'
One of the incidents could have ended badly for a 15-year-old who was reported to police wearing a hoodie and face mask and carrying a realistic-looking AR-15 style gun that proved to be fake complete with magazine and steel barrel, Trice said.
When officers spotted him, they could see the butt of the gun protruding from his sweatshirt, Trice said.
'This outcome could have been very different if the officers had made another decision,' he said. 'But, their quick critical thinking prevented that.
'One officer came from behind, snatched the weapon, while the other officer pulled him down to the ground.'
The teen, a resident of Cahokia Heights, was later released to his parents.
In a separate incident, another 15-year-old was detained carrying a handgun. He also was released to his parents.
And in a third arrest,Trice said a rookie Cahokia Heights Police officer stopped a car that was being driven erratically on Range Lane at 6:55 p.m. Saturday and noted the driver was 'acting really nervous.'
'He asked the driver to step outside of his vehicle. While talking to him, the officer noticed a bulge in his waist,' Trice said.
When backup arrived, officers recovered a 9mm weapon from the suspect's waistband.
Joseph McGary, of the 800 block of Mildren Lane in Cahokia Heights, was arrested and charged with being a felon in possession of a gun. He was released from police custody following a pretrial detention hearing Tuesday, but ordered not to leave the area or to use alcohol or drugs.

If convicted, and his sentences are ordered to run consecutively, he could face a maximum of 384 years in state prison for those charges alone. Second suspect arrested for planning Pontiac mass shooting, sheriff says

Jamarion Hardiman and a 19-year-old co-conspirator allegedly hid two loaded firearms with 80 rounds of ammunition under vehicles at the venue. The plot was uncovered after a fight at the ceremony and a tip about a Snapchat threat, though a motive is not yet known. PONTIAC, Mich. (FOX 2) - Just a few hours after announcing a suspect was wanted for planning a mass shooting at a Pontiac high school, the sheriff announced their suspect was taken into custody. Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman was arrested on Friday, within hours of being identified as a suspect wanted for planning a mass shooting at a high school graduation ceremony in Pontiac. Sheriff Michael Bouchard had announced the charges during a noon press conference. By 4 p.m., the sheriff said Hardiman was in custody. What we know The two suspects were arrested after authorities said they planted weapons under vehicles at the graduation ceremony for a Pontiac school at United Wholesale Mortgage's sports complex. A 19-year-old has also been arrested, but has not been arraigned yet. Both men allegedly placed packages under vehicles at the venue, which were later discovered to obtain two firearms containing 80 rounds of ammunition between them. Wisconsin man responsible for nearly 30 kilograms of drug distribution gets 11-year prison sentence
MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – A 32-year-old man in Wisconsin was sentenced to 11 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of meth and for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Timothy M. O'Shea, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Joshua Lake, from Stratford, pleaded guilty to the charges on February 26, 2025. Loaded AR-15 found during traffic stop in Wisconsin; one arrested Lake was identified during an early 2024 investigation as the leader of a group in Marathon County responsible for distributing massive amounts of meth and cocaine. The Central Wisconsin Narcotics Task Force investigation included a sale of 118 grams of meth to a confidential informant in February 2024 at Lake's home. Other co-defendants also completed controlled sales in March and April 2024. On April 15, 2024, a search warrant at Lake's home revealed the following: About two kilograms of meth One kilogram of cocaine Two rifles Over $25,000 Drug ledgers Trafficking paraphernalia During the investigation, officials learned that Lake had distributed about 23 kilograms of meth and six kilograms of cocaine, along with a firearm to a cartel contact in return for drugs in the same timeframe. Wisconsin deputy hospitalized after exposure to meth smoke during search warrant Lake admitted that he received a gun in exchange, which he is prohibited from possessing due to previous felony convictions.
