Caroline Harvey Sets Single Season Points Record For Wisconsin Defenders

Yahoo22-02-2025

No defender in the University of Wisconsin's history has scored more points in a single season than Caroline Harvey. Harvey claimed the mark notching her 50th and 51st points of the season in a 6-1 win over Bemidji State on Friday.
Harvey opened the scoring six minutes into the game as Claire Enright drove into the zone and passed it to Harvey who took a shot that was saved before retrieving her own rebound to beat an outstretched Kaitlin Groess in Bemidji's net.
Harvey hit the mark, recording 51 points in only 33 games.
'My teammate had said something to me about the milestone, but I'm just glad we got the win, we just had a week off," said Harvey. "We're going to keep pushing forward and we're focused on the playoffs and what matters.'
The previous record of 49 points in a season was shared by former American national team blueliner Kerry Weiland who has five World Championship and Olympic medals to her name, and former Canadian national team member Meaghan Mikkelson, who has 11 World Championship and Olympic medals, was twice named a World Championship All-Star, and was named the Best Defender at the World Championships in 2011.
The mark is an accomplishment for Harvey considering the long line of standout defenders who've come through the Wisconsin program. It's a group that includes current PWHL defenders Mellissa Channell-Watkins, Anna Wilgren, and Natalie Buchbinder, as well as North American national team members like Carla MacLeod, Molly Engstrom, and Bobbi Jo Slusar.
Harvey is also the runaway scoring leader among defenders nationally this season. She's followed distantly by fellow USA national team member Haley Winn who has 42 points in 32 games for Clarkson, and Canadian national team member Nicole Gosling, who has 34 points in 34 games also for Clarkson.

Insider: Lakers have checked in on All-Star wing

While the Los Angeles Lakers badly need a starting-level center, they're also cognizant that they have other roster needs that need to be addressed if they are to become legitimate championship contenders. One of those other needs is another two-way wing. Dorian Finney-Smith made a significant impact on the team upon arriving in a late December trade, but at this point in his career, he's primarily a power forward. The Lakers could use an athletic wing who can play the 2 or 3 positions (or both), hit 3-pointers and defend at a high level. Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat does all that and more. He has been mentioned as someone L.A. should perhaps go after and could perhaps land. Indeed, insider Anthony Irwin said on his "Lakers Lounge" podcast that the team has talked to Miami about Wiggins (h/t Athlon Sports). "Wiggins… have I heard of any interest in him? I think right now the Lakers are interested in any athlete," Irwin began on the Lakers Lounge. "Now Wiggins does make a little too much money for my liking. $28 million is a lot for Andrew Wiggins. I would imagine they are very well in tune with what Pat [Riley] thinks of Andrew Wiggins, but the Lakers have checked in on him and asked about what the price would be." Wiggins averaged 18.0 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range this season. After he was traded to the Golden State Warriors five years ago, he reinvented himself into a two-way player after he had been regarded as a low-efficiency, no-defense-playing chucker during his initial years with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors sent him to Miami in February as part of the deal that brought them six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler. Wiggins could potentially start at the 3 for the Lakers and guard multiple positions on the perimeter, and his experience winning the 2022 NBA championship in Golden State wouldn't exactly hurt either.

Two Americans fail doping tests in top Chinese basketball league

Associated Press BEIJING (AP) — The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency has released the names of two American basketball players who failed in-competition tests in April during the domestic league. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chinese Basketball Association said it had been notified by the agency of doping violations involving Montrezl Dashay Harrell and Troy Akeem Gillenwater. It said both players tested positive for Carboxy-THC and that both have given up the right to have their 'B' samples tested. The CBA said it will impose penalties on the players once the anti-doping agency makes a final decision on the case. Carboxy-THC is found in cannabis. The World Anti-Doping Agency bans all forms of psychoactive cannabinoids during in-competition periods. Harrell, who was playing for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers at the time of the doping test on April 15, has been associated with four NBA teams. He played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals, winning the Karl Malone Award in 2015 as a junior for being the top power forward in the U.S. Gillenwater, who was playing for the Guangdong Southern Tigers when his test was conducted on April 16, graduated from New Mexico State in 2011. 'The CBA firmly opposes any form of doping violations and maintains a zero tolerance stance on anti-doping efforts,' a CBA statement said. 'We are committed to safeguarding the integrity and fairness of basketball and will not tolerate any breaches of anti-doping rules.' ___ AP sports: recommended
