Benoni powerboat pilot needs your help
Reigning SA Formula One (F1) Powerboat champion Keagan Frankiewicz appeals for sponsorship ahead of the season finale at the East Rand Speedboat Club at the CR Swart Dam on May 31.
Frankiewicz is bidding to win the national title for the third consecutive year. High drama is expected during the season's final race in Rynfield as the Benonian looks on course to defend his title.
However, to achieve his bid for a third title, Frankiewicz urgently needs extra sponsors to assist him next weekend and in the future.

The Springbok Women got their 2025 Rugby Africa Women's Cup opener against Uganda in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on Saturday off to a flyer with a comprehensive 62-7 victory over the Lady Cranes that featured several try-scoring debuts. Lock Anathi Qolo captained the South African side that boasted a combined 174 caps. And despite being expected to dominate the scrum with their powerful pack, the Ugandans more than held their own in that aspect of play. The swirling wind made line-out throw-ins and clearance kicks difficult for both teams, though. The power of the SA pack was soon on display in the loose, however. Prop Xoliswa Khuzwayo and flank Lerato Makua were prominent, with strong, tackle-busting runs in midfield as the Bok Women kept the ball tight in the early exchanges. It was a tactic that seemed to catch the Lady Cranes off guard as they scrambled on defence in the face of mismatches. Qolo marked her debut as skipper with a fine opening try that was the result of sustained pressure on the Uganda tryline and quick ball through the hands, dotting down under the posts. Springbok Women's flyhalf Mary Zulu added the conversion (7-0). Uganda were struggling to cope with the rush defence from the Springboks, who dominated the battle for territory and possession, as expected. Bok Women's fullback Byrhandrѐ Dolf was growing in influence as the half wore on. She showed great hands to set up winger Simamkhele Namba on the right wing to score in the corner (12-0). Zulu missed the conversion. The Lady Cranes were forced increasingly onto the back foot. No 8 Faith Tshauke also opened her account on debut after a rolling maul off a line-out was briefly repelled by Uganda. Uganda showed the intent to give the ball air on occasion, finding room out wide. But the Boks were in uncompromising mood on defence as they snuffed out any potential danger. The Boks showed slick hands of their own, with the ball eventually ending up in Dolf's hands as they attacked at pace. The skillful fullback sidestepped a few tackles before making the score 22-0. Zulu landed the conversion this time, to extend the lead (24-0).

Gerda Steyn aims to build on her legacy with another Comrades victory
Local favourite Tete Dijana will target his third win in the men's race at the annual ultra-marathon in KwaZulu-Natal. Though she will line up as the firm favourite to win her fourth Comrades Marathon title on Sunday, Gerda Steyn insists she is not taking anything for granted on the 'down' run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Over the last two years, Steyn has broken the women's 'up' and 'down' run records at the prestigious ultra-marathon. Earlier this season, the 35-year-old athlete won her sixth successive title at the Two Oceans ultra-marathon in Cape Town, and she is expected to dominate again on Sunday. She will, however, have to beat a strong field, with her strongest challenge potentially coming from former winner Alexandra Morozova of Russia. Other contenders include the likes of Polish athlete Dominika Stelmach, American Courtney Olsen, SA-based British runner Carla Molinaro and Zimbabwe's Nobukhosi Tshuma, as well as local athletes Galaletsang Mekgoe, Jenna Challenor and debutant Irvette van Zyl. Lining up against a powerful field, Steyn said she would stay grounded and approach the race as if it was her first attempt at Comrades. 'Every year to me is more important than the year before. I think for me to establish a legacy and to show that I'm not just here to win it once and then disappear is very important to me. 'So every year I approach it as if it's my first time, as if I'm a novice with nothing to fall back on, and I make sure I stay sharp and also excited about every race.' Dijana spearheads men's line-up Meanwhile, Tete Dijana was hungry to reclaim the men's title after struggling to put up a fight last year. Dijana won the race in 2022 and 2023 (when he broke the 'down' run record') but he settled for 14th place last year, with Dutch athlete Piet Wiersma dominating the 'up' run. 'I'm so excited to come and fix what happened last year because I cramped and I walked… so this year I'm not here to walk,' Dijana said. Despite missing out on a top-10 finish in 2024, Dijana said he did not feel any additional pressure, and he warned his opponents that they needed to be wary of him. 'I don't have pressure. They have pressure,' he said. Aside from Wiersma, Dijana will also be up against the likes of former champions Bongmusa Mthembu and Edward Mothibi.

The SA women's national hockey team is gearing up for the FIH Women's Hockey Nations Cup 2 tournament in Poland from June 16 to 22 that includes Uruguay, Malaysia and hosts Poland. It is a platform for emerging national teams to showcase their talent on the international stage, with the opportunity to gain promotion to the FIH Nations Cup. 'Preparations are going well. Although I haven't been centralised with the team, playing league games weekly and training have helped me prepare physically and mentally,' said the 25-year-old hockey player who is based in Cape Town. 'I'm excited to head to an international competition, especially since the last big tournament dynamic I experienced was at the Olympic Games in Paris last year.' Video Player is loading. 'The Olympic experience has elevated my game and experience. Competing against the best allows you to perform better and has greatly enhanced my knowledge of the game and tactics,' she said. She admits that being one of the senior members of the team brings with it extra responsibility, 'but the most important thing for me is to do my best for the team and lead by example on the field'. Her 64 caps is second only to Quanita Bobbs (180) in a squad where three players – Cerian Fourie, Daniela de Oliveira and Shanna Mendonca – will be in line to make their debuts. Three others have less than 20 caps. Fellow Paris 2024 Olympians such as Edith Molikoe, Hannah Pearce, Ntsopa Mokoena, and Ongeziwe Mali also add valuable experience to head coach Inky Zondi's team. Zulu fondly recalls the role players like Celia Seerane, Lilian du Plessis and Erin Christie played in supporting her as a young player coming through the ranks and is ready to pay it forward. 'I've learnt that nothing will be given to you; you need to work hard for the team to add value and contribute to its success. Playing with pride for my country is also a big lesson I aim to pass on,' she said.
