Three suspects killed in police shootouts after failed KZN cash heist
Police fatally shot three men suspected of a cash-in-transit heist during separate confrontations around Durban on Thursday night, 29 May 2025.
According to South African Police, the suspects opened fire on the surrounding community during the failed heist.
The suspects killed a bystander and wounded a child in the crossfire.
KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said the robbers used explosives in an attempt to access the cash vehicle's safe. However, they miscalculated the blast and failed to open it.
'Since the robbery failed, they started shooting randomly to terrorise the community nearby. This caused injuries to some people.'
Police traced at least three suspects to two different areas around eThekwini.
Officers engaged all three in shootouts, and all suspects were fatally wounded.
During the attack, police recovered a rifle stolen from the crime scene. The firearm belonged to a Fidelity security guard.
One of the suspects, previously employed by Fidelity, had been dismissed for misconduct, Mkhwanazi said.
'There's no cash heist without inside knowledge,' he explained.
He added that by recovering the suspect's cellphones, police hope to download information that could link many more people involved in the crime.
'These three suspects are not the only ones involved, and we are still looking for others,' Mkhwanazi said.

Donald Trump unaware of Elon Musk's DRUG use
US President Donald Trump said on Friday he was unaware of Elon Musk's alleged drug use, brushing aside reports that the billionaire tech mogul regularly used ketamine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms during his time as a key figure in Trump's administration. Speaking during a surreal farewell ceremony in the Oval Office – where Musk formally stepped down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – Trump told reporters: 'I wasn't [aware]. I think Elon is a fantastic guy.' The remark came hours after The New York Times published a bombshell report claiming Musk's heavy drug use had sparked concern among close aides and campaign staff. According to the report, Elon Musk's behaviour – including carrying a pill box on official trips – raised questions about his fitness to serve in a senior advisory role. Despite the mounting allegations, Trump offered no indication that the reported drug use had influenced Musk's departure. Elon Musk, who appeared at the White House event wearing a 'Dogefather' T-shirt and a dark bruise under his right eye, laughed off questions about the injury. He claimed it resulted from playful roughhousing with his five-year-old son, 'Lil X.' When pressed on the drug allegations, Musk dodged the question and instead criticised the press, calling out The New York Times for what he described as 'false reporting' and suggesting the story was politically motivated. The Trump administration downplayed the significance of the drug claims. Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, whose wife reportedly works for Musk, responded dismissively: 'The drugs that we're concerned about are the ones crossing the southern border.' The low-key reaction contrasts with the typically tough-on-drugs rhetoric of Trump's previous administrations. Elon Musk's departure comes amid growing tension within Trump's inner circle over spending and the effectiveness of DOGE, which promised $1 trillion in savings but reportedly delivered far less. Despite stepping down, Musk vowed to remain a close ally. 'I look forward to continuing to be a friend and advisor to the president,' he said. But with scrutiny over his personal conduct mounting, questions remain about how long Musk can maintain his influence in Trump's orbit – or whether the former president was truly in the dark about his top advisor's controversial habits. Fraud warning for SASSA black and gold card holders
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank have warned social grant beneficiaries to stay vigilant against a rising wave of fraud targeting holders of both the black Postbank cards and gold SASSA cards. Fraudsters reportedly visit SASSA beneficiaries at their homes while posing as Postbank officials. These imposters deceive individuals into handing over their cards and PINs under false pretences, often claiming that the cards are faulty or that future payments will be blocked unless the information is provided. 'There is nothing that requires fixing on any of its black cards and SASSA gold cards,' Postbank confirmed in a statement. 'Both cards will continue to work beyond 31 May 2025 for the payments of their grants.' The criminals often wear uniforms and drive branded vehicles to appear legitimate. They typically arrive without appointments and insist on accessing SASSA beneficiaries' card PINs, an action that Postbank strongly condemns. Postbank has issued clear advice to help communities deal with suspicious activity: Alert neighbours discreetly and contact the police immediately. Report any such incidents to Postbank at 0800 53 54 55. Never give out your SASSA PIN even if the person claims to be an official. Memorise your PIN or, if written down, keep it far from the card. Postbank emphasised that it does not conduct uninvited home visits. Any official interaction must be requested through established home visit channels. SASSA beneficiaries should also reject any advice, even from someone claiming to be a government official, telling them to switch from their Postbank black or SASSA gold cards to other bank payment methods. '[SASSA] Beneficiaries must always remember that their cards and PINs are their personal keys to their money. They should never give them to anyone,' Postbank said. KZN truck accidents KZN has been battling the scourge of truck accidents in recent months, due to several factors. On 16 May, two trucks collided along the N3 Southbound just after the Peter Brown off-ramp, after one of the trucks allegedly experienced brake failure. A week before, a collision between a truck and a light delivery vehicle transporting passengers claimed multiple lives on the N2 highway near Empangeni. Duma says the province has adopted a zero-tolerance attitude to drunk drivers due to the high number of accidents. 'Weeks ago, we laid to rest nine victims of a horrific accident involving a truck in Empangeni along the N2,' said Duma. 'Families lost their loved ones and breadwinners, with children becoming orphans as a result of one reckless truck driver. 'During my meeting with senior management last Monday, I instructed our RTI team to intensify their 'no-nonsense, zero-tolerance' and Alufakwa campaign on our roads. The department said the country's roads would no longer be 'playgrounds' for irresponsible drivers. 'We must remove all these elements that are costing our country a fortune. 'We have been informed that road accidents cost the South African economy over R164 billion annually, an equivalent of 3.4% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).'
