PM Anwar: Malaysia supports June 14 Thailand-Cambodia border talks

PUTRAJAYA (June 7): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries.
Anwar said that Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN 2025, is prepared to follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia that is slated for June 14, in addition to providing the cooperation required in the talks.
'I spoke with both the Prime Ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia)… they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute.
'I'm ready to follow and provide the cooperation (that is) required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media after performing the solat sunat Aidiladha with about 15,000 congregants at Masjid Putra here today.
On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia.
Following the tension, the two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on June 14.

In a statement last Thursday, the Foreign Ministry stressed that the UNSC's repeated failure to act on one of the worst humanitarian tragedies since World War II, due to the use of veto power, is regrettable and deeply disappointing. Anwar also said that the continued actions of countries supplying arms to Israel are unacceptable and go against the principles of international law. 'It's contradictory when they issue statements of condemnation, yet continue to supply or sell weapons to Israel. Such actions violate the principles of international law and humanitarian norms. 'We strongly condemn (the atrocities) and seek diplomatic avenues to support the Palestinian struggle and help them reclaim their legitimate rights, including in Gaza,' Anwar said. Separately, Anwar said during phone conversations with leaders of other Muslim nations, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, they had expressed concern over the violence committed by the Zionist regime. 'All of them conveyed a clear stance, and we have agreed to continue consultations to find a resolution to this crisis as soon as possible,' he added.

He said the national oil company's move to downsize its workforce was instead due to global challenges. The restructuring process, he said, is necessary given the decline in crude oil prices. Fadillah also plans to meet with PETRONAS to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why PETRONAS has to relook its entire operation. 'I am planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of lay-offs can be reduced, if not avoided,' Bernama reported him as saying after the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here yesterday. On June 5, PETRONAS president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the national oil company would be cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on the following day that the lay-off exercise involved mostly contract workers. On May 21, the federal and the Sarawak state governments signed a joint declaration, establishing clear parameters and a collaborative framework for PETRONAS and Petros in the oil and gas sector. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company, under the Petroleum Development Act and its regulations. Following the joint declaration, the Prime Minister's Office said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.

His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. The Ruler said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia.
