Britain's Got Talent's Shaheen Jafargholi life now after EastEnders exit and Michael Jackson connection
Hailing from Swansea, singer and actor Shaheen Jafargholi captured the nation's attention with his 2009 audition on Britain's Got Talent, though you might be surprised to learn he already had a string of TV roles to his name before his memorable audition.
A graduate of the Mark Jermin Stage School, Shaheen boasted appearances on CBBC's Grandpa in My Pocket and Torchwood, and he even shone as a young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live on stage, all before his acclaimed BGT performance.
His BGT audition launched him onto the global scene, but not without a hiccup. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

When Shaheen began singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse, Simon Cowell interrupted, asserting that the choice was "getting it really wrong".
Prompted by Cowell to switch tracks, Shaheen then delivered a standout rendition of Smokey Robinson's Who's Loving You, receiving plaudits from the judges and a standing ovation at Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre.
Though Shaheen didn't take home the BGT title, finishing sixth after winning dance troop Diversity and Susan Boyle, did little to dampen his stride and in fact was the break he needed.
His professional background sparked debate on whether BGT should be 'only open to amateurs', with critics challenging the fairness of his participation. In response, BGT clarified that the competition was 'open to everyone'.
After his stint on BGT, Shaheen continued to find success and he even build up a friendship with the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
In September 2009, following Michael's sudden death, Shaheen performed I'll Be There at the MOBO Awards. This led to him being invited to sing at Michael Jackson's memorial at the Los Angeles Staples Center in July that year.
After his rendition of Who's Loving You by The Jackson 5, Berry Gordy (founder of Motown Records), famously remarked: "I have no cotton pickin' idea who that is, but if I were [still] in the business, I would sign him tomorrow."
In 2010, someone did just that, as Shaheen released his debut single, Last Train Home.
The track was meant to be part of an album, but to date, the album has not been released. Shaheen's management cited "huge international interest and some overseas opportunities".
These 'overseas' opportunities never came to fruition, possibly because Shaheen was about to embark on a new venture in the UK.
Shaheen, a trained actor and singer, joined the cast of EastEnders in 2016 as Shakil, the son of Carmel Kazemi, played by Bonnie Langford. His character was involved in several high-profile storylines, including a romance with Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield), involvement in gang crime, and ultimately a stabbing resulted in his character's tragic death.
The storyline received widespread praise, with the producers collaborating closely with the Ben Kinsella Trust, established by former EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella following her brother's fatal stabbing.
Notably, during Shakil's funeral episode in 2018, real-life families affected by knife crime were featured as mourners.
After leaving EastEnders, Shaheen immediately transitioned to another ongoing drama, Casualty, where he portrayed nurse Marty Kirkby. Marty was described as "a confident nurse who has a blunt bedside manner and excellent clinical skills".
He had been central to several major storylines, including coming out to his parents, engaging in casual sex with strangers, and contracting HIV. Upon joining the show, Shaheen expressed: "It's an honour to become a small part of this legacy."
With his real-life mother working in a hospital, Shaheen often turned to her for assistance with medical terminology and patient communication techniques.
The singer-turned-actor has undergone a significant transformation over the years, now sporting a fresh short hairstyle and boasting a unique fashion sense.
More recently the actor appeared in the BBC mini series Lost Boys & Fairies as the character Celyn. He said on social media: "Working on this show felt so bloody good for so many reasons. The fact that it was made and set in Wales was one of them."

He added: "So grateful to @dafjameswrites for letting me be a part of his story and to live vicariously through 'Celyn'. A job I will never forget."
From Britain's Got Talent to Michael Jackson concerts, and from Albert Square to Holby ED, Shaheen Jafargholi is one Welsh star who consistently demonstrates that he's not just a one-hit wonder.

Lionsgate's Staggered ‘Ballerina' Embargo For 'Enthusiastic' & 'Critical Sentiment' Irks Reviewers
We're all atune to the increasingly curated early responses to movies from distributors but this was beyond the pale for many. Lionsgate yesterday sent out an email to Ballerina critics and reviewers in which it told them that 'spoiler-free enthusiasm' on social media is allowed starting on May 22 but that 'critical social sentiment & formal reviews are embargoed until' June 4. More from Deadline Michael Jackson Biopic Returning To Production As Lionsgate Mulls Splitting Pic Into Two Lionsgate Confirms It May Split Michael Jackson Biopic Into Two Movies As Release Is Pushed - Update New Lionsgate Studios Swings To The Black, Revenue Pops In First Quarterly Report As Standalone Company Quite rightly, this bent many out of shape. That's an unethical demand for most. Critics we spoke to hadn't heard of an embargo edict going that far before. Many online were also perturbed. We hear from studio sources that this was a case of poor wording and that following the outcry marketers reached out to those who received the note to let them know that they're welcome to express whatever opinion they have of the movie. That would be a good outcome if it came to pass. Hopefully the rowing back wasn't only a result of the outcry. The early reaction and influencer curated responses to movies have been growing in the wrong direction for a while. We don't need anymore blurring of the critical boundaries. Michael Jackson's Chart Record Has Finally Been Beaten
SZA's SOS claims a historic thirty-eighth week at No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, ... More breaking the tie with Michael Jackson's Thriller. SZA at Variety Hitmakers, Presented By Sony Audio held at Nya West on December 2, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Variety via Getty Images) SZA has done more with two albums than most musicians manage in a lifetime. Everything about the R&B superstar's career seems to defy the norm in today's music industry, from spacing out her releases by many years to keeping her collections not just on the charts, but in the highest reaches of some of the most competitive tallies in America for years at a time. Her latest full-length, SOS, which is far from new at this point, continues to make history this week, as it remains at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart yet again, helping SZA match one of the greatest musicians of all time. The set earns its thirty-eighth stay on the throne of that list, which ranks the most consumed full-lengths in those styles throughout the U.S. Billboard notes that by keeping its position at No. 1, SOS breaks out of a tie with Thriller by Michael Jackson to claim the most weeks at No. 1 of all time on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Just days ago, the two projects were tied with 37 frames at the summit, but now Thriller has been pushed down — at least for the time being – and it's likely that SOS will continue to rule. SZA's blockbuster isn't just successful on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The full-length is a strong performer across a variety of rankings, thanks largely to sustained streaming activity. At the moment, the project is just one spot away from ruling the Billboard 200, where it sits at No. 2 behind One Thing at a Time by Morgan Wallen. That project opened with the largest debut of 2025 just a week ago, and it holds firm this time around. SOS has now lived on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally for 129 weeks, but even that total is far from what has been accumulated by SZA's only other complete project, Ctrl. This time around, that full-length jumps to No. 9, as it reaches 325 stays somewhere on the roster.

SZA's ‘SOS' Breaks Michael Jackson's Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums
SZA's SOS sails into uncharted waters on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart by becoming the longest-running No. 1 title in the chart's 60-year history. The juggernaut earns the achievement with a 38th nonconsecutive week at No. 1, on the chart dated June 7, breaking its tie with Michael Jackson's Thriller, which set the previous record of 37 weeks in 1983-84. The new title-holder attains its historic week with 47,000 equivalent album units earned in the United States in the tracking week of May 23-29, according to Luminate, a 2% increase from the prior week. In total, SOS has spent 129 weeks on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and has never fallen outside the top 10. The set opened at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and sparked hit singles such as 'Kill Bill,' which spent a then-record 21 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and 'Snooze,' which spent 13 weeks at No. 2 on the chart. The album received a second wind in December 2024 with its deluxe LANA edition's release that added more than a dozen songs to the track list, including hits 'Saturn' and '30 for 30.' As SOS rewrites the record books, here's an updated look at the albums with the most weeks at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums since the chart launched in 1965. Prior to the switch, the chart's ranks were based solely on traditional album sales. A growing shift toward longer track lists, too, has helped many popular albums retain strong chart positions as multiple popular songs from an album have provided a foundation for steady streaming numbers. Due to the shifts, several longevity milestones have been rewritten in recent years. In addition to holding the No. 1 record for decades, Thriller also had the most weeks in the top 10 of Top R&B/Hop-Hop Albums, at 76 frames in 1983-84. While no album matched that total for over 30 years, six albums have now passed Thriller's top 10-week count, all of which were released in 2012 or later. Elsewhere on Billboard's charts, SOS captures a 112th week at No. 1 on Top R&B Albums, far and away the longest leader on the 12-year-old list. On the all-genre Billboard 200, SOS ranks at No. 2, after having ruled the chart for 12 nonconsecutive weeks since its No. 1 arrival in 2022.
