From Water-Rich Foods To Light Meals: The Science Of Eating Right In Summers
Last Updated:
While it is necessary to stay hydrated in summers, one must also pay close attention to what they are eating. Eating right can help in staying energised and refreshed.
As temperatures rise, your body works overtime to stay cool, and what you eat can make all the difference. Heavy, greasy meals can leave you feeling sluggish, while the right foods can help you stay energised, hydrated, and refreshed. What you consume when it's hot outside is just as important as drinking water.
From juicy fruits to cooling herbs, celebrity dietcian and wellness coach Dr Simrat Kathuria breaks down how to eat smart when the mercury climbs, so you can beat the heat from the inside out.
Why Does Appetite Dip in Summer?
Dr Kathuria says, 'When the weather is hot, our body automatically endeavours to keep itself at a constant internal temperature. It diverts blood flow towards the skin to encourage cooling by sweat, and digestion is neglected. This is why big meals seem a little slower in warm weather, and our hunger naturally subsides. It's the body giving a message: Go easy!"
The Science of Water-Rich Foods
Watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, zucchini, oranges, and tomatoes are the gifts of nature for the summer season. Filled with water (partly 90–95% filled), they supply ongoing hydration, help to replace lost electrolytes, and help with digestion. These vegetables and fruits also contain necessary micronutrients like potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C – all of which are crucial in fighting heat stress and in maintaining cell health.
Rather than three heavy meals, Dr Kathuria suggests having smaller and more frequent meals. Light meals can be easily digested and avoid the post-meal tiredness caused by consuming calorie-rich or oily food.
These are hydrating, cooling, and nutritious, just what your body requires when the mercury ascends.
Watch Out for Cooking Techniques
Make the transition from deep-frying to steaming, grilling, or sautéing. Dr Kathuria says, 'Rich gravies, creamy sauces, and masalas can overload your digestive system. Opt for coconut-based curries, buttermilk marinades, and lemon-tamarind infusions for flavour sans heaviness."
Probiotics to the Rescue
Heat and moisture can disturb gut flora. Dr Kathuria suggests incorporating natural probiotics like curd, lassi, buttermilk, or fermented foods like kanji to improve gut health. These probiotics can enhance nutrient absorption and help you not feel bloated.
What Not to Eat?
Dr Kathuria advises, 'Too much caffeine, fried foods, processed sugar, and alcohol, all these are drying and can enhance heat storage in the body. The odd iced coffee is okay, but too much of it can interfere with sleep and aggravate summer fatigue."
Quick Tips for Intelligent Eating during Summers
Begin your day with soaked almonds and lemon water.
White rice can be substituted with millets like bajra or jowar for a better cooling effect.
Reheated leftovers should be avoided; they drain nutrients and can induce indigestion.
Avoid missing meals, but have small and balanced portions.
Infuse water with a splash of cool water and antioxidants using mint, tulsi, or slices of lemon.
Eating light and hydrating meals isn't just about staying cool, it's about keeping your metabolism, digestion, and immunity in sync with seasonal demands.

No need to panic because of rising Covid cases, just be cautious: Dr Wali
New Delhi, June 7 (UNI) The Covid cases are rising rapidly and the deaths have alerted us but there is no need to panic, prominent doctor Mohsin Wali has said. Dr. Wali, who has had the unique privilege of serving three Presidents of India -- R. Venkataraman, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, and Pranab Kumar Mukherjee -- said most of the people infected with the virus will have mild to moderate respiratory illness and will not require special treatment. While the potency of the current strain of the Covid virus has increased slightly, there is no need to panic, he says, adding people should, instead, be cautious about its transmission and follow Covid-appropriate behavior. 'This is a respiratory virus, a sars virus, and the current variant is a sub-variant of Omicron. Its spike protein has changed, and it has increased its ability to bind to cells. However, we need to fear not the virus itself but its transmission," he said. 'Fearing transmission means we need to wear masks, use sanitizers, maintain social distancing, and follow covid-appropriate protocols. We should not go directly to (interact with) small children or elderly people after coming home from outside," he suggested. "If you have cough, cold, and fever for more than three days, get tested for covid. If the test is positive, don't panic. Isolate yourself and follow the doctor's advice," he added. People with asthma, cold, and fever along with heart or kidney disease should be cautious and those who have undergone kidney or liver transplant should also be careful. "We don't need to do anything more than this. The government is monitoring it, and whenever there is another variation, it will be caught," he says. UNI AM AKK BM

Goa health minister Rane abuses, threatens GMC doc on camera, sparks furore
Panaji: Health minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday directed the immediate suspension of an on-duty chief medical officer (CMO) at Goa Medical College's casualty department. Rane's move followed a complaint alleging that the doctor told a patient to go to an urban health centre to receive an injection. In a video widely shared on social media, Rane is seen telling the senior doctor to 'go home' and 'shut up', and issued directions to 'kick him out of here'. When the doctor tried to respond, Rane told him, 'You are not authorised to speak when I am speaking' and 'first learn to shut up when I am talking to you', before telling him to 'get out from here'. As the doctor tried to reason with the minister, Rane said, 'When I make up my mind, I don't want to listen to you. .. 'Don't open your mouth when I'm talking.' 'You're dealing with me. You want to file a case, file a case,' Rane told the doctor, adding, 'go home before my blood pressure boils'. The video clip angered netizens, who didn't appreciate the minister's 'herogiri' and slammed him. They alleged that while he was preaching to the doctor to serve the poor, as TCP minister, he allegedly serves the rich from Delhi-NCR and Haryana, and thus has no moral right to preach. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lake Mary: How Much Does It Cost To Install Windows In 2025? The complaint that sparked the minister's reaction related to a 77-year-old woman and her daughter, relatives of a journalist, who went to GMC on Saturday to receive an injection for the knee. The orthopaedic patient was told she was required to take the injection every day for ten days, Saturday being the fourth day. As OPDs were closed on Saturday, the patient was asked to go to GMC's casualty department, where the CMO allegedly didn't guide the patient properly, and told her to go to the urban health centre for the injection. Rane lectured the doctor on how to talk to patients, and not send them from pillar to post but to guide them properly. He told the doctor he was at GMC to 'serve poor people'. 'However much loaded you are, you will talk properly and guide the patient,' Rane said, addressing the doctor in the casualty department. Rane directed GMC's medical superintendent, Dr Rajesh Patil, to get orders issued to suspend the doctor, and told him to get another CMO to replace him.
