Battle for 2 spots among 4 players, serious headache for Gautam Gambhir in England
There is a difficult decision ahead of Team India, as they pick two among four extremely talented all-rounders in the England Tests series. The competition is intense, which mounts pressure on coach Gautam Gambhir. The strategy of the team will be seriously affected by this decision.
Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy are fighting over one leading all-rounder pace position. Thakur has the England experience and Reddy has intrigued with his performance in the Australian tour. Their performance in the intra-squad match and English conditions suitability will be the determining factor.
In three Tests played in England, Thakur has 122 runs and 8 wickets to his name. He has scored a best of 60 runs and has taken 2/22 as his best bowling figures. This experience places him at a huge advantage of selection.
Reddy has no experience of playing in England but scored a century in Australia. His 5 Test matches in Australia picked 298 runs and 5 wickets. The lack of experience is compensated by the hopes about his potential in England after this performance.
The spin all-rounder is a position where Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are fighting. Jadeja has plenty of experience in England (12 Tests, 642 runs, 27 wickets) and is therefore a contender. Talented as he is, Sundar does not have the experience of English conditions.
The overall Test record of Sundar is spectacular, 9 Tests, 468 runs (42.54 average), and 25 wickets. His inexperience in English conditions may count however against the proven record of Jadeja.
Finally, Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill will have to consider experience over potential. Thakur has the experience of playing in England which makes him a probable candidate whereas Jadeja has a long list of records in his name. The playing XI in the end will be an interesting mixture of youth and experience.

Lani Pallister joins Ledecky in cracking 1500m freestyle barrier
Lani Pallister became only the third woman to swim under 15mins 40secs in the 1500m freestyle Saturday, joining American great Katie Ledecky and Dane Lottie Friis. Pallister hit the wall at the Australian world championship trials in Adelaide in 15:39.14, a new Commonwealth record. 'I was chasing number two all the time. I was looking at the rankings, and Lottie Friis is one that stood for a long time, obviously, only behind Katie,' said Pallister. 'I fell apart with like 500 to go. I felt so sick. But I'm just really stoked with the week that I put together.' ALSO READ | Summer McIntosh breaks 400m medley world record Friis' 15:38.88 was set in 2013. Ledecky owns all 23 fastest times ahead of that, including the world record of 15:20.48. Pallister's time capped a breakthrough meet for the 23-year-old, who shattered Ariarne Titmus' 800m national record and went under four minutes for the first time in the 400m. Ella Ramsay, 20, was another standout swimmer, booking a fourth event at next month's world championships in Singapore by winning the 400m medley in 4:36.12 ahead of Jenna Forrester (4:36.19). She also won the 200m medley and 200m breaststroke and came second in the 100m breaststroke. 'Last day is always hard and even harder having the 400m medley,' said Ramsay, with the trials in their sixth and final day. 'I had to keep it composed and I'm really happy with that time.' Ramsay was at the Paris Olympics and part of Australia's silver-medal winning 4x100m medley relay team. She came fifth in the 400m medley but a bout of Covid derailed her 200m medley campaign. She joins Mollie O'Callaghan (50-100m backstroke and 100-200m freestyle) as the only swimmers to qualify for four individual events. O'Callaghan missed out on making a fifth when she finished fourth in the 50m freestyle, won by Olympic silver medallist Meg Harris in 24.17. ALSO READ | Olympic medallist Kaylee McKeown cruises to 100m backstroke crown at Australian trials Olivia Wunsch and Alex Perkins tied for second in 24.70, with a decision yet to be made on which one will take the second available slot. Harris is a serious gold medal prospect with Swedish world record holder Sarah Sjostrom, who beat her to the Paris Olympic title, pregnant and not racing this year. 'That's what I was training for,' Harris said. 'I found a new way to motivate myself this year, and I found a new appreciation for the sport.' Olympic 400m medley bronze medallist Brendon Smith punched his ticket with a 4:12.81 swim ahead of Will Petric (4:13.23), who also qualified. A rejuvenated Kyle Chalmers will take on three events in Singapore after touching first in 22.89 in the 50m butterfly. Olympic 50m freestyle champion Cameron McEvoy was disqualified after coming second.

India Women's Hockey Team Loses 2-3 To Australia In FIH Pro League
The Indian women's hockey team fought valiantly after conceding three goals against Australia but eventually lost 2-3 in a FIH Pro League match in London on Saturday. Australia took a 3-0 lead through field goals from Courtney Schonell (16th minute), Lexie Pickering (26th) and penalty stroke conversion by Tatum Stewart (35th). The Indians, however, mounted a comeback in the contest after the change of ends through two penalty corner goals from Deepika and Neha. India enjoyed the early share of exchanges but failed to break the resolute Australian defence. In the ninth minute, Australia earned their first penalty corner, but India defended stoutly. In the 13th minute, India were denied by brilliant double save from Australian keeper Aleisha Power. A minute into the second quarter, Schonell scored after a defensive lapse from india. Six minutes later, Australia doubled their lead when Pickering found the net from a goal mouth melee. Australia dominated the first two quarters and enjoyed a 2-0 lead at half time. Five minutes into the third quarter Australia secured a penalty corner but first rusher Sunelita Toppo kept the danger away. Australia were awarded another penalty corner for a stick check, which resulted in a penalty stroke for a foot involvement and Stewart made no mistake to hand her side 3-0 advantage. The final quarter, however, belonged to India as they pressed hard on the Australian defence and reduced the margin from their first penalty corner, which was neatly converted by Deepika. India secured two more consecutive penalty corners soon but wasted both. Eight minutes from he final hooter, India had another penalty corner and this time Neha scored from rebound after Deepika's flick was saved by the Australian goalie. Two minutes from time, India had a great chance to equalise from of a penalty corner but squandered the opportunity.
