Raducanu says ‘expectations are pretty low' for Queen's Club after back spasm

Emma Raducanu has admitted she is unsure how her body will hold up to the rigours of the grass court season after another back spasm in training. The 22-year-old's latest injury concern came as she was preparing for the first women's tournament at Queen's Club for 52 years, and left her unable to practise for several days.
It was Raducanu's second back spasm in three weeks, after initially experiencing the problem against Danielle Collins in Strasbourg a week before the French Open, and she admits she goes into the Queen's Club event with low expectations as a result.
'Of course I want to win this tournament, like every tournament, but especially when it's at home,' Raducanu said. 'But my expectations are pretty low, because I played points for the first time today, and I've had maybe two or three days on the grass courts, so it's not been much.'
Asked whether she was worried about it affecting her grass court season, Raducanu replied: 'I can't really predict the future, and how it's going to be. I know I've been managing my back for the last few weeks now. It's something that comes and goes.
'It can be frustrating. When I was playing in Strasbourg in my second-round match it definitely hindered me, and in the first round in Paris when I got through. But I try not to let it get to me. I just have to manage it and take care of it when things happen.'
Raducanu knows she faces a stacked field at Queen's Club that includes the reigning Wimbledon champion, Barbora Krejčíková, the Olympic gold medallist Qinwen Zheng and the Australian Open winner Madison Keys. However, her preparations were given a lift when her former coach Nick Cavaday, who left her camp for health reasons in January, returned to help her practise with her main coach Mark Petchey still at the French Open.
'I'm happy to see Nick healthy, first of all,' Raducanu said. 'It's been a long time since we were last on court together in Australia, and Mark is in Paris commentating. Nick was around, and it is nice to have a few days with him.'
The new WTA 500 tournament at Queen's Club features an enhanced prize money of $1.4m (£1m), but the purse remains about half that of the men's ATP 500 event, which begins next week. Raducanu did not want to be drawn on whether there should be more equal prize money between the men's and women's tour.
'There is obviously a big difference, and I'm sure a lot of players will say their piece on it, but prefer not to kind of get involved,' she said. 'Whatever the situation is, I'll kind of roll with it, but I'm never really going to take a stand, either way.'
She was equally non-committal when asked about the LTA's commitment to equal prize money at Queen's by 2029. 'I don't really get involved or stay in the loop with all the boards and all the decisions and stuff,' she said. 'I just get on with it. But I don't feel like I really am playing for money. Of course, I need to sustain my team, which is extremely expensive. And with my kind of profile, coaches and team members see that. So it is a very expensive sport, but it's not my motivation when I play.' skip past newsletter promotion

As a child, Raducanu used to come to Queen's Club with her father, although she admitted that she was more interested in looking for brownies than watching the tennis. But now she admits she is delighted that women are finally back playing for the first time since 1973.
'To be playing here is amazing. It's the first time there's been a women's event for a very long time,' she said. 'It's going to be great to be playing on home turf with a good crowd.'
Raducanu will also be making only her second appearance in a WTA doubles tournament after agreeing to partner with her fellow Briton Katie Boulter, with whom she has played in Billie Jean King matches. 'It'll be extremely special,' Boulter said. 'Obviously, she's a great player, and I'm looking forward to having the first of many more.'

By the end, it felt cruel to want more. Look at the state of these men: bedraggled and dishevelled, dragged into a place of wildness and madness, of mental atrophy and physical dismay. You, on the other hand, have spent the last five and a half hours sitting on your couch, eating snacks and gorging on the finest sporting theatre. You want this prolonged for your entertainment? You want more of this? And of course the only real answer is: yes. Yes, please. Twilight zone at Roland Garros. Two sets each, six games each: the shadows ravenous, the noise bestial, every thrill laced with a kind of sickness. By the end, admiration began to meld with pity. Pity for their teams and families, trapped in the convulsions, feeling a spiralling hypertension with every passing moment. Pity for the tennis balls, being smacked and beaten mercilessly across the Paris night. Pity for the watching Andre Agassi, who you could swear had hair when this match started. And ultimately, with one scream and one shrug, pity for Jannik Sinner, for whom it will be no consolation at all to have lost one of the greatest matches ever played on the crushed brick of Paris. Neither he nor Carlos Alcaraz had lost any of their grand slam finals. Sinner had never won over more than four hours. Alcaraz had never come back from two sets down. What followed was a match that took them, and us, and very possibly the sport of tennis itself, to new and giddy places. Perhaps the snapshot that best illustrated this came an hour and a half earlier, with Alcaraz perched at the baseline, facing three championship points. For four long and ragged sets, he had thrown everything against the world No 1. He tried giving his groundstrokes a little more air. He tried hitting lower and flatter. He tried breaking up the rhythm. He tried smearing clean winners to wrench back the momentum. He tried stepping up on the Sinner serve. He had unleashed every part of his game, and still found himself playing somebody else's. Because to watch Sinner at his best is like watching a hydraulic excavator very methodically demolishing a bridge. The techniques and the instructions are drilled to flawlessness. The sense of immense power is almost irresistibly effortless. Every movement is timed and calibrated, every tool the perfect implement for its job. And as Sinner stood on the verge of victory, the job appeared to be done. But of course there are some jobs that cannot be done by machine. And for all the flaws and blemishes in Alcaraz's game, what he brings is a very human ingenuity: the sense that however deeply you analyse him, however well you can read his intentions, you can never know for sure, because no two situations are ever the same. Tennis is a game of repeatable skills but it is also a game of moments that exist entirely in their own time, of human will and human feelings and human choices. And so the three errors that Sinner makes on championship point are unforced errors, but entirely human errors, a product of this moment and this opponent. For Sinner is of course not a machine, as became so painfully evident in that fifth set. Here the margins began to fray. Here the brutal thudding forehands that had previously just cleared the net were now clipping it. Here he railed angrily at his box. Even a crucial line call at 30-30 in the 10th game went against him, the ball over an inch out but called good. For obvious reasons Sinner will never be as lavishly adored by crowds as Alcaraz: the less reserved of the two, the more emotionally available of the two, the only one of the pair not to have failed a doping control. For all this there remains a deeply admirable quality to him, so evident in that fifth set when Alcaraz taunted him with drop shot after drop shot. Forlornly, Sinner kept chasing them down, kept falling short, a man utterly and spellbindingly committed to his mission, even if it took every last drop of effort out of his body. And of course this is the stuff of which great sport is made, of which great theatre is made, of which great rivalries are made. Perhaps this was the game that truly buried the Big Three era, even if Novak Djokovic is still puffing along on his last fumes. These two have now won the past six majors between them. The only player to beat Sinner on the ATP Tour since last August is Alcaraz. The only man to take a set off him in Paris was Alcaraz. Naturally there will be an irresistible tendency, as there always is, to draw out the contrasts in this particular rivalry, to set Sinner and Alcaraz against each other like wrestlers, hero and heel, poles apart. But these are players defined more by what they share: a murderous ambition, a taste for the spectacular, the never-ending quest for perfection on a tennis court. You want more of this? THOMAS FRANK has agreed to become the new Tottenham manager. Although that could cost Levy up to £70million with a possible £10m compensation package for Frank, plus £60m for Mbuemo's services. That would test Totteham's financial power, especially as Mbuemo is thought to be demanding around £250,000 per-week in wages, which would make him the club's highest-paid player. But Spurs' victory over United in Bilbao does mean they can offer him Champions League football. MANCHESTER United may have had one of their worst seasons — but they topped the league for shirt sales at airports. More fans bought Red Devils jerseys than those from the likes of Man City and Liverpool during the Prem season, figures show. 1 Liverpool may have clinched the title but among shoppers at JD Sports outlets at London Stansted and East Midlands, as well as, unsurprisingly, Manchester, their tops were popular enough only for fourth place. United's local rivals Man City ranked second, with England shirts third. Retro also appears to be making a revival, with 1990s England shirts in the top 20. While the Red Devils tops of Bruno Fernandes and Co took top spot overall, there were regional variations. Arsenal kit was the best-seller at Stansted and the Gunners appeared in the top five across all three airports, owned by Manchester Airport Group. Prem strugglers Tottenham were only eighth at Stansted, their nearest airport. They were the fourth-placed London team, also behind Chelsea and West Ham, and were even beaten by Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan across all airports. At East Midlands, the England shirt was No1. MAG communications director Adam Jupp said: 'Airports are always places where people love to show their football allegiances — whether that's fans travelling to fixtures at home or abroad, or international visitors coming to watch world famous teams here in the UK. 'Despite a dismal season, Man United's appeal, across the UK and with inbound tourists, appears to be as strong as ever.'
