In a harrowing incident that unfolded in Southridge, KwaZulu-Natal, a 15-year-old boy allegedly attempted to set his mother alight and burn down their home following a monetary dispute.
The shocking episode took place on Monday evening when the mother, a 52-year-old single parent, reached out to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for assistance amidst escalating violence.
According to reports, the teenager had been demanding cash for his upcoming sixteenth birthday, insisting on an amount greater than what his mother could afford.
He was frustrated by his mother's inability to provide the anticipated funds, she offered him R100. In a fit of rage, the boy reportedly assaulted her, igniting a series of alarming events that would soon spiral out of control.
As her son's fury peaked, he attempted to set the house ablaze by igniting paper in one of the rooms.
Witnesses noted that this act was not a mere tantrum; rather, it was an alarming escalation of violence that left the mother fearing for her life.
The teenager, in a bid to carry out his intentions, allegedly searched the house for flammable materials to use against his mother.
When RUSA officers arrived on the scene, they found both mother and son in an emotionally charged state. After engaging in discussions with the mother, the officers worked to diffuse the situation.

'Fraudster' arrested after allegedly confessing to RDP housing scam

A woman who allegedly scammed a number of people by promising to fast-track their applications for government subsidised housing has been arrested after allegedly walking into the Gauteng department of human settlements office and confessing her crimes. The woman told a senior official at the department's customer support centre earlier this week she had illegally collected more than R100,000 from members of the public, the department said She claimed she could help them 'jump the housing waiting list' and secure Breaking New Ground or RDP houses. The official alerted authorities and the suspect was apprehended in a joint operation by the department and the Ekurhuleni metro police. She is now in police custody and faces charges of fraud. Human settlements MEC Tasneem Motara praised the official who escalated the matter. 'I commend the official who acted responsibly and was not tempted to get involved in corrupt activity herself. We are serious about cracking down on corruption and fraud, especially those who are trying to take advantage of citizens who have a real need to be allocated [housing] as soon as possible.' The department reiterated warnings about housing scams and reminded the public it does not charge for any of its services. It urged residents to remain alert and avoid being duped by individuals who falsely claim to be government officials. 'Please be aware of unscrupulous individuals who pose as officials from the Gauteng department of human settlement — falsely claiming to be MECs or heads of department to deceive and extort money from the public.'

KZN siblings shot dead while sleeping in bed

Two KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) siblings were fatally shot while sleeping in bed at their home in Intaphuka, Ndwedwe, on Thursday, 29 May 2025. The two brothers, aged 26 and 29, were found unresponsive in their shared bed. According to Reaction Unit South Africa, three suspects forcefully entered the residence of the victims. The suspects shot both victims and stole their phones before fleeing the scene. Speaking to The South African, RUSA spokesperson said that the suspects have not been apprehended, and investigations are ongoing. In other news, suspects broke into a high school in Inhlabamkhosi and stole computers and projectors 'Two projectors were recovered abandoned. It is believed that the suspects involved were also linked to the double murder (of the siblings), but this could not be immediately confirmed,' said RUSA. A 17-year-old girl was found dead inside a locked shack in Kinross after she went missing on 23 May 2025. Police received a request to search a residence believed to be associated with the victim's stepfather. Upon arriving at the shack, police found the doors and burglar gates locked. They forcefully entered the shack and found the naked body of a young female in a semi-decomposed state, believed to be the missing teenager. 'She was lying on a bed covered with blankets, [and] her legs were open. The victim had visible head injuries, including a deep wound and a crushed forehead. It is suspected that she was raped before being killed,' the police said. Additionally, a bloodstained pipe wrench was found next to the bed and was allegedly used in carrying out the murder. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim argued with her stepfather after he wanted to sell the shack that once belonged to her late mother. 'The teenager had reportedly objected, expressing concern for her younger siblings, who would need a place to stay in the future,' the police statement read. Investigations link the stepfather to the murder of the victim. He is also in police custody for allegedly being involved in murdering his 34-year-old girlfriend on the same day the victim went missing. He is now a suspect in both murders.
