Sophie Ecclestone left out of first England squad under Charlotte Edwards

Telegraph14-05-2025

Sophie Ecclestone has been left out of Charlotte Edwards's first England squad for the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies.
Telegraph Sport understands the selectors' decision to omit Ecclestone predominantly because of a knee injury sustained by Ecclestone over the winter.
Ecclestone, who tops the ICC's T20Is and 50-over bowling rankings, returned to domestic cricket with Lancashire on Wednesday after missing the opening seven rounds. It is expected she will play for the county for a month before any decisions on her international future are made.
Maia Bouchier is another notable absence from Edwards's first squad as England head coach, having opened across the formats during the Ashes.
Ecclestone made headlines during England's chastening Ashes defeat in Australia when she publicly refused to do an interview with her former team-mate-turned pundit Alex Hartley. The public spat was over comments made by Hartley during the T20 World Cup in the autumn questioning the players' fitness levels, although she did not name any individuals specifically.
Since taking over the role of head coach following the sacking of Jon Lewis in the wake of the England and Wales Cricket Board's review of the series, Edwards has set out her mantra.
Abandoning the previous notion of 'inspire and entertain', Edwards insisted in her opening press conference that going forwards it would be about winning matches.
The conversations surrounding fitness became a black cloud following the England side, amid Lewis' ill-judged comments that Australia's superior 'athleticism' was because of their improved climate and something he noticed on a walk between Bondi and Coogee.
Edwards, who refers to it as the 'f-word' in team settings, has insisted she will judge for herself the abilities of the squad she inherited, but has already shown she is not afraid to go against those who came before her when it comes to squad choices.
Over the past few years, the England women's side has faced criticism for selecting essentially the same squad for all series, despite their fluctuating on-field fortunes.
Edwards has not only encouraged her players to feature for their counties under the new tiered system, but also told them that their performances will play a part in selection.
Along with appointing a new national selector, who Telegraph Sport understands to be Lydia Greenway, Edwards is moving new captain Nat Sciver-Brunt's role away from squad selection.

Spurs' Mikey Moore aiming for another European trophy with England Under-19s

Having made his Spurs debut at the end of the last season, the highly-rated 17-year-old kicked on and showed glimpses of his outstanding potential during a topsy-turvy campaign in north London. Moore made 19 appearances in all competitions for his boyhood club, with five of those coming in a Europa League campaign that ended with Tottenham beating Manchester United to win a first trophy since 2008. The winger was on the bench in Bilbao and three weeks on has more continental glory in his sights as England kick-off their bid for Under-19 European Championship glory against Norway on Saturday. 'It was a top experience – some of the best times of my life on that Wednesday night,' Moore told the PA news agency. 'Hopefully going on to win another medal and another trophy with these boys here would be a brilliant feeling, and experience for everyone. 'There's some top players. We think we can go on and hopefully win the tournament. It's been a good little build-up but excited to get into the games now.' England have been preparing for their shot at Under-19s glory in Romania over the past week, when it was confirmed Brentford boss Frank would be succeeding Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham manager. 'With Ange, I'm thankful to him,' Moore said. 'He gave me an opportunity to go and show people what I could do. 'Now I'm just excited to get back and hopefully go and impress the new manager. Try and show what I can do, really. 'I started away at Brentford, where obviously he was in charge, and I've played against his team before. 'I've heard that he's a good man and he's a good manager. One of the boys here (with the Under-19s) works under him and says good things about him, so I'm just excited to get going under him, really.' Frank is sure to be an interested observer as Moore looks to help England win the Under-19 Euros for the third time. The 17-year-old could be one of the stars of the tournament judging by some of his Spurs displays, with team-mate James Maddison likening him to Neymar after October's Europa League win against AZ Alkmaar. Moore went on to become the youngest Englishman to score a major European goal, breaking a record held by Jimmy Greaves since 1957, with his superb goal against Elfsborg in January, but there have also been some difficult moments. 1️⃣ Mikey Moore – 17y 172d2️⃣ Jimmy Greaves – 17y 245d Mikey is now the youngest English goalscorer in major European competition history 🤯 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) January 30, 2025 'When I look back on the season, when I go back to (last) pre-season I didn't ever expect to be in the position I was halfway through the season,' Moore said. 'But obviously it wasn't all great, it didn't all go to plan. I think there were certain parts in the season where I've not struggled, but had down moments. 'But when I look back on it it's been a massive learning year for me, and it's obviously come to an end now almost, and we came out successful. It's a season I will always look back on and be proud of.'

Sophie Ecclestone recalled by England for T20 series with India

Ecclestone missed the opening stages of Edwards' reign due to a knee injury and announced last week that she was taking a break from domestic cricket with Lancashire to 'prioritise her well-being' and manage a sore quad. But the plan was always for the team's most highly-rated bowler to return for the five-match series against India and the slow left-armer takes here place in a 14-strong squad. Did someone say squad announcement? 👀 Our T20 squad has just dropped for our India series 👇 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 13, 2025 Ecclestone's comeback means no room for leg-spinner Sarah Glenn, who drops out after featuring in just one of the three T20s against the West Indies. 'It's great to have Soph back, and we're looking forward to having her back in the group. She has obvious qualities and she'll be an asset to us,' said Edwards. 'It does mean Sarah Glenn misses out, we are blessed with a strong group of spinners and we unfortunately can't play them all. It's now a great opportunity for Sarah to go back to The Blaze and play some competitive cricket in the Vitality Blast.' Em Arlott and Issy Wong are included again after coming in for Edwards' first series but the team must once again do without former captain Heather Knight, whose hamstring problems have already ended her summer. Reflecting on the challenge of taking on a strong India team who sit third to England's second in the International Cricket Council rankings, Edwards added: 'They're one of the best sides in the world and it'll be a huge test for us. 'There was lots to be happy about in the West Indies series but equally lots of things we want to keep improving on – we're always looking at getting better. Five games against India in front of big crowds at great venues will serve us really well. This is a significant series for us with the countdown well and truly underway towards the home ICC Women's T20 World Cup.' England Women's squad for Vitality T20 series against India: E Arlott, T Beaumont, L Bell, A Capsey, C Dean, S Dunkley, S Ecclestone, L Filer, A Jones, N Sciver-Brunt (c), P Schofield, L Smith, D Wyatt-Hodge, I Wong.
