Searches for Madeleine McCann resume in Portugal countryside

The Guardian2 days ago

Searches for Madeleine McCann have resumed in Portugal with police using a digger to clear debris around an abandoned building a miles from where the British toddler was last seen in 2007.
On Wednesday, Portuguese and German authorities continued focusing on derelict structures in countryside a few miles from the resort of Praia da Luz.
The fresh searches for Madeleine began on Tuesday, 18 years after the three-year-old disappeared from Praia da Luz while her parents were out having dinner, leaving her sleeping in a nearby room with her toddler twin siblings.
The sounds of chainsaws and strimmers could be heard as investigators appeared to continue clearing areas of scrubland in Atalaia, on the outskirts of Praia da Luz.
Police used a JCB to clear rubble around one building and also appeared to have emptied another nearby disused structure of debris. Bricks and rocks could be seen piled outside the graffitied structure.
Personnel wore protective gear including as hard hats and face masks as they cleared vegetation around the structures.
Officers stopped journalists from getting close to the search areas, which were cordoned off with police tape.
The search is being carried out at the request of the German federal police, as they look for evidence that could implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.
Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine's parents, are not commenting during the 'active police investigation', staff at the Find Madeleine campaign said.
Brueckner is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought.
In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
About 30 German police, including forensic experts, are expected to take part in the search, which is expected to last until Friday, along with Portuguese officers.
The Metropolitan Police said they were aware of the operation but that British officers will not be present.
German investigators and Portuguese officers last carried out searches in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz.
Brueckner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir.
It was previously searched in 2008, when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to search it, after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was there.

Man charged with murder after disappearance of Colombian woman

A man has been charged with murder after a Colombian woman disappeared after leaving her east London home. Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, was reported missing to the Metropolitan Police on Saturday May 31 having left her home in Ilford on the morning of Thursday May 29. Police were at a scene in Gray's Inn Road, Camden, on Friday as part of their investigation into the incident. Juan Toledo, 51, of south-east London, appeared at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on the same day charged with her murder. Scotland Yard said the man, who was arrested on Tuesday, is known to Ms Castro Mendez. Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in Camden, said: 'Officers have been working around the clock to find Yajaira. She has not been seen or heard from by her family or friends since the date she was reported missing. 'Yajaira's disappearance was initially treated as a missing person investigation led by local officers. 'The investigation was then transferred to the Met's Specialist Crime Command on Thursday (June 5) after a range of extensive further inquiries very sadly suggested she has come to harm. 'Yajaira's family continue to be supported by specialist officers, and we are keeping them updated with developments. 'Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances and there are crime scenes in place across Camden and Lambeth. 'We thank the community for their patience while we carry out our inquiries and ask that any one with information please comes forward.' Anyone with information relating to Ms Castro Mendez's disappearance is asked to contact police via 101 or @MetCC quoting CAD 3020/06JUN25, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Body found in search for missing 19-year-old Cole Cooper

A body has been found in the search for Cole Cooper, a 19-year-old who went missing four weeks ago in Falkirk. Police officers said the body of a man was discovered in a wooded area near Kilsyth Road in Banknock, near Falkirk, at about 4.15pm on Friday. While formal identification has yet to take place, Cooper's family, who are from the village, have been informed, Police Scotland Forth Valley said in a statement on Facebook. Cooper was last seen at about 8.45pm on 7 May on the A803 at its junction with Cumbernauld Road in Longcroft, near Falkirk. He was reported missing two days later, on 9 May. The investigation has so far involved a large-scale search operation, including the use of helicopters, divers, and specialist digital and financial investigators. Police said almost 400 people had been spoken to as part of door-to-door inquiries, and more than 2,000 hours of CCTV footage had been reviewed. Detectives had previously said they were treating the case as a missing person inquiry rather than a criminal investigation. A major incident public portal set up to collect images, footage and information from the public had received numerous submissions, police said. Police added that inquiries were ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
