WWDC 2025: Apple brings live translation to Messages, FaceTime and Phone calls

Time of India4 hours ago

Apple kickstarted its annual developer conference—
WWDC 2025
today (June 9). At the event the company unveiled the live translation feature which enable
real-time language translation
across Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps. The new capability, powered by on-device Apple Intelligence, ensures private and seamless communication without relying on external servers. This innovative capability is powered by Apple-built models that operate entirely on-device, ensuring user privacy and real-time responsiveness.
WWDC 2025: How live translation works
In the Messages app, text will be automatically translated as users type, delivering messages directly in the recipient's preferred language. Responses will also be instantly translated back, allowing for fluid, back-and-forth communication.
For FaceTime calls, the feature introduces live caption translation. This enables users to follow along with translated text that appears on screen, while still hearing the original speaker's voice. This dual approach aims to preserve the authenticity of the conversation while providing immediate comprehension.
Live Translation extends to traditional Phone calls, offering spoken translation throughout the conversation. This means users can engage in real-time verbal exchanges with individuals speaking different languages, with the AI facilitating the translation on the fly.
Apple emphasised that Live Translation runs entirely on-device, ensuring that personal conversations remain private. The feature is designed to break down language barriers, making global communication more accessible.
Live Translation will roll out with iOS 26, expected later this year, and will support multiple languages at launch.

Apple WWDC 2025: Why did tech giant move from iOS 18 to iOS 26?

Apple, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference 2025, unveiled various upgrades to its operating systems on Monday, including the release of iOS 26 as the tech giant decided to change its naming convention. The tech giant announced the release of its new iOS this fall. Originally, as per the usual sequence name after iOS 18, this year's release would have been called iOS 19. However, since Apple declared that it is changing its naming convention, saying that its future iOS versions will be numbered on the basis of the year, similar to how car manufacturers name new models, this year's release will be called iOS 26. "Our releases for the fall that will power us through the coming year 2026 will be version 26," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president. The upcoming latest software versions cross all products of Apple will end with '26' - iOS 26, watchOS 26, macOS 26, visionOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26. Apple also announced a new "Liquid Glass" design language for its software. This will display apps and toggles with a translucent, glass-like shine. The new design will be implemented in buttons, sliders, media controls and larger elements such as tab bars and sidebars, along with matching redesigned toolbars and navigation system. The tech giant is releasing updated Application Programming Interfaces so that developers can begin adapting their apps ahead of the release of the new design later this year. The company said that it is also making new additions of Apple Intelligence to its operating system, including Live Translation. Image Playground is also getting a new feature boost with the incorporation of OpenAI's ChatGPT. Apple will also let users learn more about what's on their iPhone screens with the help of Visual Intelligence. Users can search about images on their iPhones across Google, Etsy, and other supported apps. If the tool finds out that you are viewing an event, iOS 26 will suggest that you add it to your calendar. Additionally, the tech giant said that it would add generative AI to its Xcode coding tools that can help developers write code, test it and resolve errors.

Apple's Spotlight on macOS Tahoe can now send emails and run shortcuts, not just open apps

With the macOS Tahoe , Spotlight is getting its biggest update ever that transform the Mac 's search feature into a powerful action centre capable of sending emails, creating notes, and running shortcuts without opening other apps. The revamped Spotlight can now perform hundreds of actions directly from the search interface, letting users complete tasks like playing podcasts, setting reminders, and composing messages without switching between applications. Apple says this makes Spotlight the fastest way to access content across your Mac. Quick Keys are the standout new feature: two-letter shortcuts that instantly jump to specific apps or actions. Type "SM" to send a message or "AR" to add a reminder, with options to create custom shortcuts for personal workflows. This brings Alfred and Raycast-style launcher functionality directly into macOS. The interface has been completely redesigned with intelligent ranking that groups all results – files, apps, messages, and events – together based on relevance. New filtering options let users narrow searches to specific file types like PDFs or Mail messages, while browse views make it easier to scan through apps, files, and clipboard history when you're not sure what you're looking for. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Retirement Village Coming To Alexandria - Take A Look At The Prices New York Retirement Village Click Here Undo Apple Intelligence integration makes Spotlight contextually aware, suggesting actions based on user habits and current work. The system learns routines and surfaces personalised shortcuts, like quickly messaging frequently contacted colleagues. Developers can integrate their apps using the App Intents API , making third-party actions searchable alongside Apple's built-in functions. Spotlight can also search through menu bar options in currently open apps, keeping hands on the keyboard for power users. The updates extend beyond Mac. Spotlight can now surface apps from connected iPhones through iPhone Mirroring and search documents stored on third-party cloud services. There's also clipboard history integration, addressing a long-requested feature from Mac users.
