GCC Boosts Marine Defences

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has renewed its collective pledge to defend the Arabian Gulf's fragile marine ecosystem, launching a call for stronger regional collaboration and investment in ocean-safe technologies.
Speaking at the Third United Nations Ocean and Climate Conference in Nice, France, GCC Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi said the region is pushing forward with joint efforts to curb marine pollution, protect biodiversity, and implement Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on life below water.
Strategic waters
Surrounded by three major bodies of water, GCC countries occupy a strategic maritime corridor.
Yet, Al-Budaiwi noted, the Arabian Gulf faces intense environmental stress.
As a semi-enclosed sea, it is highly sensitive to pollution, climate-driven changes, and marine degradation.
'This ocean represents a very important natural resource for our countries,' Al-Budaiwi said, citing coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and fisheries as vital to food security, cultural heritage, and economic growth.
He highlighted the Gulf 's global significance, noting that over 40,000 ships, including key oil tankers, pass through its waters every year — making maritime protection critical to both the region and the world economy.
Al-Budaiwi pointed to a growing portfolio of collective initiatives among GCC countries: creating marine protected areas, enforcing sustainable fisheries practices, and combatting marine pollution.
He emphasised that the GCC is also integrating marine research, data-sharing, and early warning systems as part of a joint response to ocean and climate threats.
'Gulf countries recognise that ocean health does not respect borders,' he said, stressing the need for regional coordination to defend marine ecosystems from rising temperatures, acidification, habitat loss, and industrial pressures.
Global engagement
The UN conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica and held under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron, brought together global leaders, environmental experts, and senior officials.
Al-Budaiwi used the platform to underline the GCC's openness to international partnerships that help protect oceans for future generations.
He reaffirmed the Council's full commitment to advancing SDG 14 through innovation, cooperation, and long-term sustainability planning.

Israel strikes Yemen's Huthi-held Hodeida port

Yemen's rebel-controlled media reported Israeli strikes on the port of Hodeida yesterday, with the Israeli army saying its navy had hit the area following calls on civilians to evacuate three Huthi-held ports. 'Israeli Navy Missile Ships struck terror targets belonging to the Huthi terrorist regime in the port of ' Hodeida, the Israeli army said in a statement. 'The strikes were carried out to stop the use of the port for military purposes,' it said, adding that the port was being 'used to transfer weapons'. Al-Masirah TV channel said 'two strikes by the Israeli enemy targeted the docks of the port of Hodeida'. In a post on X, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said 'we warned the Huthi terror organisation that if they continued firing toward Israel, they would face a powerful response and be subjected to a naval and aerial blockade.' Earlier, Colonel Avichay Adraee, an Israeli army spokesman said that 'because of the use of maritime ports by the Huthi terrorist regime, we call on all people present' in the ports of Ras Issa, Hodeida and Salif 'to evacuate them immediately for their own security' in an Arabic post on X and Telegram. Yemen's Huthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel since the Gaza war broke out in October 2023 with Palestinian militant group Hamas's attack on Israel.

French President Macron slams Israel for intercepting Gaza humanitarian boat

French President Emmanuel Macron said yesterday the humanitarian blockade of Gaza was a 'scandal' and 'shameful', calling for the reopening of humanitarian supply routes. Macron also called for a truce in the besieged Palestinian territory as tens of thousands of people staged rallies across France after Israel stopped a boat, carrying a dozen activists, including Greta Thunberg, from reaching Gaza. The rallies in Paris and at least five other cities were called by left wing parties. Jean-Luc Melenchon, head of the France Unbowed (LFI) party, called the seizure of the Gaza boat by the Israeli military 'piracy'. Immediate liberation Macron, meanwhile, urged the immediate liberation of French nationals among the 12 activists on the vessel. Macron had 'requested that the six French nationals be allowed to return to France as soon as possible,' his office said. France was 'vigilant' and 'stands by all its nationals when they are in danger,' he added. The French government had also called on Israel to ensure the 'protection' of the activists. Macron also called the humanitarian blockade of Gaza 'a scandal' and a 'disgrace'. 'Heinous attack' Turkey also slammed the Israel move, describing it as a 'heinous attack'. The Madleen left Italy on June 1 to raise awareness over food shortages in Gaza, which the United Nations has described as the 'hungriest place on Earth', with the entire population at risk of famine. 'The intervention by Israeli forces on the 'Madleen' ship while sailing in international waters is a clear violation of international law,' Turkey said, calling it as a 'heinous attack' by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a statement, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) said Israeli troops 'forcibly intercepted' the vessel in international waters at 0102 GMT as it was approaching the Gaza Strip. Turkey's foreign ministry said there were Turkish nationals among those on board, with FFC's website indicating there were 12 people from seven countries, including Turkey. Two of them hold Turkish passports. Hamas condemned the move, saying the Madleen was being taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
