Butchery manager arrested in connection with Woodlands acid prank released on bail
CAPE TOWN - The manager of a Mitchells Plain butchery appeared in court on Thursday for attempted murder, after allegedly giving a 17-year-old boy acid to drink.
Police arrested 53-year-old Nuruddin Tembe on Wednesday after the teenager ingested the drain acid on Sunday.
Residents from Woodlands, where the incident happened, gathered at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Thursday to call for justice.
Tembe was granted R1,000 bail.
It's the State's case that Tembe gave the 17-year-old casual worker drain acid to drink from a cold drink bottle.
The State insisted that both the Woodlands community and the butchery's owners did not want Tembe to return to work.
Tembe's attorney, Asghar Mia, told the court that his client was asked not to return to work for his own safety after angry residents threatened to torch the butchery on Sunday.
The accused was warned to stay out of Woodlands.
He is due to appear in court again on 12 August.

Foreign national found with R70K in drugs expected in Limpopo court on Monday
JOHANNESBURG - A foreign national found in possession of drugs worth over R70,000 is expected to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate's Court in Limpopo on Monday. The suspect was arrested on Friday during an intelligence-driven operation led by the K9 unit and tracking teams. Police spokesperson Malasela Ledwaba says the drugs were found at the suspect's home. "During the search at the suspects residence, police seized cat and crystal meth drugs. The suspect is expected to appear before Lephalale Magistrate's Court on Monday, 9th June 2025."

Two ex-councillors from Walter Sisulu Municipality have been sentenced for defrauding a woman of R150,000 in a fake RDP housing scam. Both have been ordered to repay R80,000 by August 2025. Image: Nokuthula Mbatha/Independent Newspapers Two former councillors of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape have been found guilty of defrauding a woman of over R150,000 in a bogus Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing deal. Mokhoabane Spetla Moahlodi, 63, and Mxolisi Mdumisa,44, were arrested in 2018 by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The two had promised the victim an RDP house in April 2017 in exchange for payment, which she duly deposited into their account. However, the promised house was never delivered. After several court appearances, the pair were sentenced to five years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on the condition that they repay R80,000.
