Ukrainian tenor Gorai dies while volunteering in Sumy, Odesa opera says

The Stara day ago

(Reuters) -Tenor Vladislav Gorai, a soloist with the Odesa National Opera, died on Sunday while engaged in a volunteer mission in the northern region of Sumy bordering Russia, opera officials said.
More than three years after launching its war against Ukraine, Russia moved further into Sumy last week, threatening the regional capital in a dual advance with fierce frontline fighting and relentless missile and drone attacks.
"The whole world knew the voice of Vladislav Vikentiiovych, but his heart belonged to Ukraine," the opera said in a Facebook statement on Sunday. "Even in the darkest times, he did not stay aside - he helped, volunteered, supported."
It added, "The Odesa National Opera has been orphaned."
It was not immediately clear how Gorai, designated in 2013 an Honoured Artist of Ukraine, died. Reuters could not independently verify the report.
On its website, the opera says Gorai worked with the Odesa theatre since 1993, after graduating in 1988 from the music faculty of the Vinnytsia State Pedagogical Institute.
He participated in international opera projects in cities such as Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Lyon, Strasbourg and Zurich.
Among the international music houses with which he worked were Madrid's Teatro Monumental and Romania's State Opera and Ballet Theater. He toured Britain, Canada, Italy and the United States, among other countries.

Pickup truck driver swerves to avoid puddle, triggers 4-vehicle pile-up

JOHOR BARU: A pickup truck driver's attempt to avoid a water puddle led to a four-vehicle pile-up along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam early this morning in an incident that has since gone viral on social media. The 5.50am crash, near Bangunan Sultan Iskandar here, involved a Toyota Hilux, a Perodua Alza, and two motorcycles. No injuries were reported. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said a 34-year-old man was driving the Hilux when he swerved to avoid a puddle in the left lane, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an Alza on the right lane. "The impact caused the Alza to slide forward and hit two motorcycles ahead, causing both riders to fall onto the road," he said in a statement today. A video clip of the accident, shared on TikTok and Facebook by user Mulan Woon, has since garnered public attention. Police confirmed they were alerted to the viral footage at about 10.26am today. "All parties involved have lodged reports, the case is being investigated for failing to control a vehicle while driving," Raub said. He reminded all road users to exercise caution during wet conditions and to drive within safe limits, particularly in low-visibility or water-logged areas.

Johor woman loses RM55,000 to online scam

JOHOR BARU: A woman lost more than RM54,000 after being scammed into believing an online side job offering a high commission. Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the 32-year-old victim lodged a police report last Thursday (June 5), where she was duped into believing the offer she came across on Facebook. 'Her ordeal began on May 30 when she saw a job offer on the social media platform. The victim then clicked on the link given and was directed to a WhatsApp number. 'She was promised to get a commission from 10% and 35% in a short time,' he said here on Tuesday (June 10). ACP Sohaimi added thinking the offer was legitimate, the victim then carried out 16 withdrawals into 10 different bank accounts between May 30 and June 3, amounting to RM54,950. 'The victim was then told to make more payments to allow her to withdraw her commission, but she failed to do it. She only realised she had been cheated after failing to get back her capital and commission. 'Initial investigation through the Semak Mule found that six out of the 10 bank accounts have seven police reports involving the same modus operandi,' he said. He urged the public not to easily believe in any job opportunities that offer high commission in a short time and always make checks with the relevant authorities before making any payments. ACP Sohaimi also said the public should get complete information on online job offers from verified sources and should immediately report to the authorities if they were doubtful. 'People should not give their personal information, including banking details, to unknown third parties and should not be fooled by any offers that provide easy money in a quick time. 'Use the Semak Mule before carrying out any financial transactions and if they have been scammed, please contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 as an early action to stop their money from going out of the suspect's account,' he added.
