Major update on probe into slaying of Ireland based dad and daughter in Iceland

Police in Iceland investigating the fatal stabbings of an Irish-based French dad and daughter found dead in a Reykjavik hotel room are gathering information from mobile phones and surveying CCTV videos to try and shed a light on what happened. A French woman, who is the wife of the man and mother of the daughter, was arrested and remains in custody in hospital as she is being treated for stab wounds. Her condition is stable and according to Icelandic media, she is able to speak. The family had French citizenship but had been living in Ireland in recent years. The woman, aged in her late 50s, her husband, who was also in his late 50s, and their daughter, who was around 30 years of age, had travelled from Dublin to the Icelandic capital Reykjavik on Saturday 7 June. They were due to fly back to Dublin last Saturday, June 14. However, the husband and daughter's bodies were discovered that morning in the hotel room. A staff member at the Edition hotel had alerted Icelandic police to the 'serious incident.' A police report states the French woman has been remanded in custody at a hospital by the Reykjavik District Court until Friday, June 20 on the basis of investigative interests at the request of the Metropolitan Police in the interest of their investigation into the two deaths. Police say that the period of detention may be extended for another week when she appears in court again. 'No further information can be provided at this time,' the police report states. According to local reports, the bodies of the father and daughter were found on the fourth floor of the hotel. They had both sustained stab wounds. The woman in her 50s was found alive and had also sustained stab wounds. She was brought to Landspitali University Hospital, the main national hospital which is located in the capital.

Irish-based dad and daughter stabbed to death in holiday hotel room tragedy

A French woman has been arrested in Iceland after her husband and daughter - who all had been living in Ireland - were found stabbed to death in their hotel room in Reykjavik. The family had French citizenship but had been living in Ireland in recent years. The woman, aged in her late 50s, her husband, who was also in his late 50s, and their daughter, who was around 30 years of age, had travelled from Dublin to the Icelandic capital on Saturday 7 June, according to RTE News. They had booked a flight home for last Saturday, 14 June, the day on which the bodies were discovered. Icelandic police received a call at 7.14am local time that morning (8.14am Irish time) from a member of staff at a hotel located in downtown Reykjavik, close to the harbour. Officers were told that "an incident had occurred", and while no details were given in that call, "it was clear something very serious happened", a spokesperson for the Reykjavik Metropolitan Police told RTÉ News. The incident occurred at the Edition Hotel in Reykjavik, Icelandic state broadcaster RÚV reported. According to local reports, the bodies of the father and daughter were found on the fourth floor of the hotel. They had both sustained stab wounds. The woman in her 50s was found alive and had also sustained stab wounds. She was brought to Landspitali University Hospital, the main national hospital which is located in the capital. The woman then appeared in Reykjavik District Court on Saturday, and was remanded in custody until Friday 20 June, RTE News reports. Police say that the period of detention may be extended for another week when she appears in court again, but could not comment on what charges, if any, may be brought, as it is still the early stages of this investigation. The French Embassy was immediately contacted upon discovery of the bodies, Icelandic police confirmed. It is understood that police have not contacted the Irish consulate. Fatal blaze in car linked to Irish person may have been sparked by a cigarette

North Yorkshire police suspect a fatal blaze in a car registered to an Irish person may have been accidentally sparked by a cigarette. The remains of a body in a burnt out car were discovered on Marishes Lane, Malton, North Yorkshire at around 4am on Monday, June 16. North Yorkshire Police said formal identification 'may take some time' but a family in Ireland is being supported by specially trained officers. The death is currently treated as unexplained. However, it is understood they are investigating whether the fire was accidental and not suspicious with sources saying a cigarette may have caused the car to go on fire Sources also say the connection to an Irish family was made as the car is registered to an Irish person. Police also say the discovery of a body in a burnt out car may be linked to an earlier crash. A spokesperson for the force said: 'Detectives are also investigating a possible link to an earlier collision, which occurred at around 11.10pm on Sunday 15 June on the A169 Malton Road between the A64 interchange at Malton and Marishes Low Road. 'This incident involved a black Vauxhall Astra and an unknown vehicle. The occupants of the Astra were not injured.' Anyone with information should contact the force.
