Alex Palou Indy 500 prize money: How much will winner take home. And what about the rest?

Hindustan Times25-05-2025

Alex Palou made history on Sunday by becoming the first Spaniard to win the Indianapolis 500. The 28-year-old, driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, held off Marcus Ericsson for a close victory. With the title, the Spain-born driver will take home a whopping prize money.
The Indy 500 purse is among motorsport's largest, funded by Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), NTT IndyCar Series awards, sponsors, and TV revenue. In 2024, the purse reached a record $18,456,000, with winner Josef Newgarden earning $4,288,000, including a $440,000 BorgWarner rollover bonus for back-to-back wins.
The purse has grown steadily, from $16,000,200 in 2022 to $17,021,500 in 2023, and is expected to hit or exceed $19 million in 2025, per IndyStar estimates.
Approximately 20% of the purse goes to the winner, with the rest distributed among the 33-driver field based on finishing position, laps led, and special awards.
Palou's 2025 winnings are projected at $3.8 million to $4.5 million, assuming a purse of $19 million and no rollover bonus (since he's a first-time winner).
Base Winner's Share: Historically, winners receive ~15–20% of the purse, equating to ~$3.8 million for a $19 million pot.
Laps Led Bonus: Palou led at least 14 laps, with each lap led worth ~$5,000–$10,000 based on 2024 payouts, adding $70,000–$140,000.
Qualifying and Practice Awards: Despite starting sixth, Palou's fast practice laps (226.765 mph) and Top 12 qualifying (233.043 mph) likely earned $10,000–$50,000 in bonuses, per IndyCar.com.
Chartered Team Boost: The 2025 IndyCar charter system grants higher payouts to chartered teams like Chip Ganassi Racing, increasing Palou's share over non-chartered entries.
The remaining purse is distributed progressively, with second-place Marcus Ericsson likely earning ~$1.05 million (as Pato O'Ward did in 2024) and the average driver payout around $550,000, up from $543,000 in 2024.
Special awards, like the $50,000 Rookie of the Year bonus (won by Kyle Larson in 2024), add to individual earnings. Pole-sitter Robert Shwartzman earned $100,000 for his historic rookie pole.
The exact payout is only revealed after the race.

'Illegal alien': Steve Bannon demands federal probe into Musk's immigration status; says SpaceX should be seized ‘before midnight'

Former White House official Steve Bannon on Thursday called for to be investigated and deported, claiming the billionaire is in the US illegally. 'They should initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status, because I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien, and he should be deported from the country immediately,' he said while talking to The New York Times. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Bannon also demanded investigations into Musk's alleged drug use and an incident in which the South African-born entrepreneur reportedly tried to obtain a classified Pentagon briefing on China. He said Musk's security clearance should be suspended, and his government contracts canceled during the probe. Additionally, during his "War Room" podcast, he urged Trump to invoke the Defense Production Act to take control of , following Musk's brief threat to decommission the Dragon spacecraft used by to transport astronauts to the International Space Station. Musk later walked back the statement, but Bannon insisted Trump act swiftly. The Defense Production Act, first enacted during the Korean War, allows the president to prioritise government contracts for national defense but does not explicitly grant the power to seize private companies. Tensions between Musk and Trump have been rising over Musk's support for a congressional spending bill and his growing criticism of the former president. Trump expressed disappointment in Musk during an Oval Office meeting on Thursday, saying, 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' Musk responded on X by accusing the Trump administration of withholding documents related to and suggesting Trump should be impeached and replaced by vice president JD Vance. Bannon, a longtime Musk critic, has previously called him 'a parasitic illegal immigrant' and accused him of having no respect for American values. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On his podcast, Bannon argued that Trump had given Musk significant power, which the billionaire then used for personal gain. 'He turned on President Trump. He turned on MAGA. But most importantly, he turned on the country and the American people,' Bannon said. He warned that Musk might financially back progressive leaders like house minority leader Hakeem Jeffries and support efforts to impeach Trump.

Trump-Musk fallout: How it will impact the president and the tycoon

It was always just a matter of time, insist some, after US President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk fell out in dramatic fashion over the past week. Their partnership played a critical part in powering the Republican Party and Trump to a dominant victory in the 2024 election, allowing both men to realise their ambitions to reshape American politics. At the heart of their disagreement is Trump's major tax cut bill, dubbed the 'One Big Beautiful Bill.' The White House has argued that the bill's tax cuts will unleash unprecedented economic growth. However, according to the congressional budget office, the cuts could expand America's fiscal deficit by a staggering $2.5 trillion over the next decade. Musk has been clear that he opposes the bill, which is a centrepiece of Trump's economic agenda. As head of the department of government efficiency (DOGE), Musk promised to cut the deficit by radically restructuring the federal government and cutting spending. Musk has vehemently opposed the One Big Beautiful Bill for running against his efforts at DOGE, since the bill could potentially expand the fiscal deficit and worsen America's debt burden. The bill also cuts tax credits for electric vehicles, which could hit Musk's Tesla. These disagreements spilled into a very public breakdown in relations between Trump and Musk. The consequences for both men could be serious. For Trump, Musk has been a determined political ally who could become a dogged opponent of his agenda. The 'One Big Beautiful Bill' remains controversial within the Republican Party, and Musk's criticism of it has given some Republicans — including, for example, Florida's governor Ron DeSantis — some cover to criticise the bill. The legislation must now go to the Senate, and Musk's opposition could make passing Trump's signature financial bill harder. More broadly, Musk has been a major financial engine powering Trump's political campaigns. The South African-born entrepreneur gave an estimated $250 million to Trump's 2024 presidential election campaign. Large sums were also expected to be allocated to the Republican Party for the 2026 midterm elections, where the party will face a difficult fight to hold on to control of America's House of Representatives and the Senate. Without Musk, things will be harder for the party. Musk's ownership of X, previously Twitter, has also helped amplify Trump and his movement's message to millions of users around the world. However, Musk will likely suffer some blowback for his public attacks on Trump. Musk left the administration towards the end of May to refocus on his flagship businesses, including electric vehicle maker Tesla and space technology firm SpaceX. The latter business has received billions in government subsidies over the last few decades as it develops cutting-edge technology for cheaper space travel and satellite internet. Following their fallout, Trump has threatened to eliminate government subsidies and contracts with Musk's companies. This sent the stock price of Tesla spiralling downwards. Many investors had expected Musk to benefit from a closer relationship with the Trump administration, which now seems to be in jeopardy. Musk is also likely to face significant political heat for his decision to attack Trump. Musk and his companies — especially Tesla — faced protests and even arson because of his work on DOGE. These political controversies could be further amplified, with even conservatives moving against Musk.

From sleepovers to jumping on stage: A look at Elon Musk and Donald Trump's bromance before ‘big beautiful breakup'

For a short while, though, U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk seemed inseparable. Here are key moments from their high-profile alliance before it unravelled over Musk's criticism of Trump's grand, 'big, beautiful' budget bill. The world's richest man, Elon Musk, quite literally jumped for joy when he publicly backed Republican candidate Donald Trump on October 5, 2024. The South African-born Musk sprang into the air like one of his own SpaceX rockets as he joined Trump on stage in Butler, Pennsylvania — the same location where Trump had survived an assassination attempt just three months prior. "As you can see, I'm not just MAGA, I'm dark MAGA," Trump told the crowd, tipping his all-black "Make America Great Again" hat. He would go on to become the campaign's biggest donor, spending nearly $300 million. Trump caught reporters off guard when he unexpectedly brought Elon Musk into the Oval Office for Musk's first media appearance since arriving in Washington. The bigger surprise, however, was Musk arriving with his young son — officially named X Æ A-Xii but more commonly called "Lil' X" — whom he later hoisted onto his shoulders. 'This is X and he's a great guy,' said Trump, as the boy picked his nose while his father boasted about his cost-cutting exploits with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Rumors of friction were already circulating between the headstrong Musk and members of Trump's administration when the billionaire attended his first cabinet meeting in February. But Trump moved to squish any suggestions of trouble in paradise. 'Anybody unhappy with Elon? If they are, we'll throw 'em out of here,' said Trump, jumping in after AFP asked Musk whether the reports of strains were true. The rest of the cabinet then erupted into a round of applause for Musk -- just as they would do three months later when it emerged he was stepping back from the role. At another meeting, Musk proudly wore a 'Trump was right about everything' baseball hat. In the frenzied early weeks of Trump's return to the presidency, the president and the tech mogul appeared nearly inseparable. They traveled side by side aboard Air Force One and the Marine One helicopter. Musk even stayed overnight at the White House, proudly claiming he once devoured an entire tub of ice cream. Their bromance also took a macho turn, as they were spotted together at mixed martial arts events, cementing their public camaraderie. Musk meanwhile proclaimed his loyalty on his social media platform, X. He declared himself the "First Buddy" and said: "I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man." Musk's Tesla car company took a major hit from his bromance with Trump. Trump, knowing that a threat to Musk's businesses could drive him out of his role, decided to help out. The president turned the White House South Portico into a pop-up Tesla showroom for Musk, with a Cybertruck and a Model S parked outside. Trump even said he had purchased one. Two of Trump's press aides were seen posing in the gleaming red car as recently as last week, AFP reported. I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man. After the spectacular break up it was still sitting in the White House parking lot on Thursday.
