The internet is buzzing with chatter around Abhishek Banerjee-led Stolen. The film that was just released on Amazon Prime has been the talk of the town for its intense plot, edge-of-the-seat thrill and brilliant acting by the cast. If you have seen the movie or even just the trailer, then we bet you must be thinking whether it is a true story. Well, let us tell you that yes, it is inspired by the 2018 Karbi Anglong lynching case in Assam.
What was Assam's Karbi Anglong lynching case all about?
As per reports, two men, Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath, were travelling in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. It was at the same time that the villagers in the state had fallen prey to a WhatsApp rumour about child kidnappers. The buzz was that there were child abductors operating in the same area. Believing this, the villagers attacked these two men.
Despite Niloptal and Abhijit pleading in front of the crowd and trying desperately to prove their innocence, the villagers pulled them out of their car and beat them to death with sticks and stones. Not just this, the attackers also filmed the brutal scene, and the traumatic and horrifying video went viral, sparking national outrage.
Karan Tejpal on Stolen being based on real-life incidents
The director in an interview had confirmed that his directorial debut, Stolen, is based on real-life incidents that happened in Assam's Karbi Anglong area. Tejpal admitted that this incident left him traumatised, after which he began his research. He revealed that this incident was the initial push he needed to make Stolen.
Cast, Plot and Producers of Stolen
The executive producers of Stolen include Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, Nikkhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane. The film is directed by Karan Tejpal and produced by Gaurav Dhingra. The cast features Abhishek Banerjee, Harish Khanna, Mia Maelzer, Sahidur Rahaman, and Shubham Vardhan.
Abhishek plays Gautam Bansal, and Shubham plays Raman Bansal, the brothers who set out to find the missing baby. Mia Maelzer plays Jhumpa, the lady whose child is abducted. Stolen premiered on Amazon Prime on 4 th June and since then has been gaining popularity amongst viewers.

Stolen director Karan Tejpal says films with 'good person doing good things and winning' are boring: 'We are all flawed'

Director Karan Tejpal's Stolen has finally found its way to reach the Indian audiences. Two years after it won viewers over in film festivals across the world, the film is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. In a chat with HT ahead of the release, the debutant director opened up about his filmmaking choices and more. Stolen stars Abhishek Banerjee as an urban man accused of stealing a baby from a railway platform, and how he and his brother are embroiled in a situation from which there is no escape. Interestingly, the film chooses Abhishek's Gautam, the more morally ambiguous character, as the protagonist. The younger brother, Raman (played by Shubham Vardhan), is more morally upright, but not the central character. Explaining that choice, Karan says, 'That is a more dramatic story to tell, and hence, you are drawn to it more naturally. If you tell a story about a good person who does really good things and then wins at the end, it may be slightly boring.' Connecting the choice to relatability, the sophomore filmmaker says, "Why we wanted to tell a story about a flawed character is because all of us are flawed, whether we accept it or not. In our private thoughts, we are extremely flawed, which is why we relate to such characters. Almost all filmmakers want to start with a flawed or under duress character so you can build from there." In an age when small independent films with offbeat subjects are struggling to find audiences, Karan chose Stolen for his debut. When asked why, he shrugs and says, "I just knew this one way to go. So, it's not like there was any choice for me." Stolen, backed by Anurag Kashyap, Nikkhil Advani, Kiran Rao, and Vikramaditya Motwane, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

'Baby, We're Ordering That Pill': 15-Year-Old Girl's Secret Chats Shock Brother, Reddit Reacts

Last Updated: A teen's private WhatsApp chat left open on a laptop led her brother to discover a troubling relationship, prompting concerns about family responsibility and youth vulnerability The responsibility of raising and guiding children does not rest solely on parents but extends to every member of the family. A supportive and open home environment is vital to help young people navigate the complexities of adolescence. However, not all feel safe enough to share their struggles. In today's digital age, many youths are increasingly influenced by external forces – peers, online communities, or manipulative individuals – who may lead them astray. As a result, instead of turning to their families, some choose secrecy, hiding important aspects of their lives out of fear, confusion, or misplaced trust. In a recent case, a young man uncovered disturbing information about his sister after she inadvertently left her WhatsApp account logged in on his laptop. Shocked by what he read, he turned to social media to share his experience. Disturbing Details Shared Online A Reddit user, posting under the handle @babidi_bada_boom-500 in the group r/indiasocial, detailed a harrowing experience involving his 15-year-old sister. Accompanying the post was an image of the WhatsApp interface, revealing the source of his distress. The user explained that his sister had accessed WhatsApp on his laptop and failed to log out. Upon opening it, he found private messages, presumably from her boyfriend, that left him stunned. 'I feel my family has failed, I have failed as a brother, and my parents have failed in raising my sister. I cannot describe the pain I feel after seeing this," he wrote. The user stated that he recognised the name of the boy his sister had been speaking to, someone he had previously warned to stay away due to inappropriate behaviour. He was particularly distressed to find the boy persuading his sister to convert to Christianity and noted that his sister appeared complicit in the exchange. The WhatsApp conversation also alluded to the boy procuring medication, implying the couple may have engaged in unprotected sexual activity. While uncertain about the exact nature of the medicine, the brother was deeply troubled and turned to the online community for guidance on how to proceed. First Published: June 06, 2025, 14:27 IST
