Is it time for a new, globally recognized men's professional golf ranking system?

Khaleej Timesa day ago

As we approach the third Major of the 2025 season, the US Open at Oakmont this week, it seems the perfect time to reflect on how much the golfing landscape has changed since the inaugural LIV Golf event at the Centurion Club near London in 2021,
With LIV Golf attracting high-profile players and a bigger global schedule, the PGA Tour has made several adjustments - most notably by increasing prize purses and introducing other innovations.
As a result, the influence of LIV Golfers in the global golf conversation cannot be underestimated.
Take Joaquin Niemann, for example, winner of last week's LIV Golf event in Virginia, marking his fourth victory of the 2025 season. Despite being ranked just 79th in the current Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), many industry observers view him as a legitimate top 10, if not top 5, player in the world.
This disparity presents an ongoing challenge for the golf authorities: to acknowledge this evolving reality and adapt accordingly - or risk becoming outdated.
It's a puzzle that will only grow more complex with time.
Let's not forget: this time last year, Bryson DeChambeau won the 2024 US Open, his second career victory in the championship. What impact did that have on the narrative surrounding LIV Golf and its standing relative to the PGA Tour?
One major obstacle for LIV players continues to be limited access to OWGR points, which have traditionally served as the key metric for qualification into the Majors and other prestigious global events.
But those rankings now appear increasingly out of sync with performance. In response, some Majors have shown flexibility, extending special invitations to ensure strong fields.
Consider this: Dubai-based Adrian Meronk played in all four Majors in 2024. In 2025, he currently looks set to miss out on all of them.
Is it time for a new, globally recognized ranking system across men's professional golf? The debate is only just beginning.

Tijjani Reijnders becomes Manchester City's fourth signing ahead of Club World Cup

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders ahead of this summer's Club World Cup in the US. Reijnders, 26, joins from AC Milan for a reported fee of €55 million and has signed a five-year contract which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030. The midfielder was signed before Tuesday's pre-Club World Cup transfer deadline and will be available for the tournament alongside fellow new recruits Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki who also joined the club this week. Reijnders said: 'I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City. City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities. "Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years. 'It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League. This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps. 'I am really looking forward to getting going, meeting the other players and showing the Manchester City fans what I can do.' City's director of football, Hugo Viana, added: 'We are very happy that Tijjani has joined us and we're excited for him to join Pep's squad. 'He arrives here with extensive top level experience in Europe, both at club level as well as on the international stage with the Netherlands. 'Tijjani adds extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield and working with Pep and our coaches will only see him go from strength to strength.' A Netherlands international with 22 caps, Reijnders began his professional career with PEC Zwolle before moving to AZ Alkmaar, where he made 128 appearances. He joined AC Milan in the summer of 2023 and went on to play 104 times for the Italian side. He enjoyed a stand-out 2024/25 campaign, scoring 15 goals in 54 appearances. His performances earned him the Serie A Best Midfielder award and a place in the Serie A Team of the Season. City's latest transfer activity continues an overhaul of the squad that began with the January signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

This Week in Golf: U.S. Open at Oakmont and top tournaments around the world

The next seven days promise drama, dreams, and the roar of the crowds as golf's global spotlight turns toward one of the game's greatest stages. Whether you're a major-hunting fanatic, a fan of rising stars, or just looking for feel-good fairway stories, this week in golf has something for everyone. Here's what to look forward to on courses around the world. Golf's toughest test returns in grand fashion From June 12–15, the eyes of the sporting world lock on to Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, host of the 125th U.S. Open Championship. Known for its slick greens, punishing rough, and no-nonsense setup, Oakmont has long been a crucible for greatness. Expect thrills and heroics as the world's top golfers chase immortality in one of the sport's four majors. The likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, and a hungry field of challengers will battle nerves and nature in pursuit of the U.S. Open trophy, one of the most iconic trophies crafted by Tiffany & Co., the renowned American luxury jeweller, who is also one of the world's most prestigious trophy makers since 1837. The original U.S. Open trophy was first awarded in 1895. It's not just a tournament - it's golf at its punishing best. Europe's Stage: The Kaskada Golf Challenge Across the Atlantic, the Czech Republic hosts the Kaskáda Golf Challenge - a proving ground for the stars of tomorrow. This Challenge Tour event tees off at the scenic Kaskáda Golf Resort in Brno, starting June 15. For Europe's next generation of pros, this is more than a paycheck - it's a stepping stone to the DP World Tour and beyond. While the U.S. Open grabs headlines, the Kaskáda Challenge reminds us that every great player starts somewhere. Women's Schedule Meanwhile, the Women's game features two tournaments but one purpose. The stars of the LPGA Tour roll into Blythefield Country Club, where power meets precision in this fan-favorite event. Past editions have featured stacked leaderboards and final-round fireworks — and this year promises the same. More than a tournament, the Meijer LPGA Classic supports the Simply Give campaign to feed local families in need - proof that golf can uplift both on and off the course. Also lighting up the leaderboard this week is the Ladies European Tour, as it heads to Belgium for the Hulencourt Women's Open. It's a golden opportunity for rising stars and LET regulars to grab some momentum as the season heats up. From Pennsylvania to Prague, Michigan to Belgium, the week ahead showcases golf's diverse global spirit. At the pinnacle sits the U.S. Open — where history waits to be made. But just beneath, the rhythm of professional golf continues to pulse through every tee time, every putt, and every dreamer stepping onto the first tee. So grab your coffee (or your clubs), clear your schedule, and tune in. This week in golf promises magic. Valentine's day at competitive Jumeirah Golf Estates OMA Emirates June Medalford

Bradley Valentine rose to the occasion on Saturday, 7th June 2025, capturing the June edition of the OMA Emirates Medalford at Jumeirah Golf Estates with a composed five-under-par round of net 67. Claiming victory on a back-nine countback, Valentine edged out a strong field of 84 players to earn the top honour on the Fire course. 'I struck the ball well today and felt in control throughout the round,' said Valentine. 'The Fire course was in fantastic shape, and I'm really proud of my score of seven net birdies and a net eagle certainly helped!' Valentine's triumph headlined a day of top-tier competition, as Jumeirah Golf Estates hosted its monthly tournament in partnership with Unique Holding. Ideal early-summer conditions and the pristine quality of the Fire course - thanks to the outstanding work of the Agronomy team - set the stage for strong performances across all divisions. Cameron McWhinnie, Assistant Golf Services Manager, praised the collaborative effort behind the event: 'We're very thankful to OMA Emirates and Unique Holding for their ongoing support of these events. Most importantly, our gratitude goes to the members—your enthusiasm and involvement make these tournaments truly enjoyable for all.' Schoombie Takes Gross Medal In the Gross Medal Division, Mark Schoombie fired an impressive three-under 69 to take the title, just ahead of Tom Neale, whose 70 was edged out on countback. Division A (handicap index 10.4 and below) saw Tom Morgans take the top spot with a net 68, finishing just ahead of Adam James (69) and Priyan De Mel (71). Joshua Burton delivered a standout round of net 67 in Division B (handicap index 10.5 and above), narrowly missing the overall title to Valentine on countback. Andrew Turnbull followed with a net 69, and Richard Bernans placed third with a net 73. In the Ladies Division, 2026 Lady Captain Michelle Walsh-Hall came out on top with a three-under net 69, securing victory on a back-nine countback. The Junior Division highlighted emerging talent as Abdulla Darwish posted a level-par net 72 to take the win. Moments later, his father, Mohammed Darwish, delivered a net 69 to capture the senior's title - making it a day to remember for the Darwish family. Harrison tops Stableford Division In the Stableford Division, James Harrison led with 41 points. Though a mid-round ruling removed him from medal contention, he showed great composure to claim the Stableford prize. Willemijn Roeterdink followed with 39 points, taking second on countback. The event wrapped up in the Jumeirah Golf Estates Ballroom with a vibrant prize ceremony and buffet, celebrating another successful OMA Emirates Medalford in Dubai's premier golfing destination.
