
H&M profits drop but sales expected to bounce back in June
The Swedish group – the world's second largest stock market-listed fashion firm – posted a 17% fall in operating profits to 5.91 billion Swedish krona (£455 million) for the second quarter to May 31.
But it beat expectations, helping H&M's shares jump 7% in Stockholm on Thursday morning trading.

This came despite a slightly worse-than-forecast performance for sales, which edged just 1% higher in the quarter due to store closures.
H&M said with the store closures stripped out, sales rose by 3%.
The firm gave an upbeat outlook for June, guiding for a 3% jump in sales, which marks a significant rise on the 6% fall seen a year ago.
But it also flagged more discounting in the third quarter compared with a year earlier.
H&M said earnings were impacted by higher costs of clothing due to a stronger dollar, as well as investment into its 'customer offering' and giving 'customers even more value for money'.
Chief executive Daniel Erver said: 'Our plan, with its focus on the product offering, the shopping experience and the H&M brand, is confirmed by the progress we see in key parts of the business.'
He added: 'In uncertain times with cautious consumers we monitor macroeconomic and geopolitical developments closely and continuously adapt both the customer offering and the business to meet our customers' needs in the best way.'
The group said it was keeping a close eye on 'developments in global trade and trade restrictions'.
'With good flexibility in the supply chain and through the pricing of the customer offering there are opportunities to adapt the business to changed conditions,' it said.
H&M closed 153 stores in the year to May 31, leaving it with 4,166 worldwide.
In the first six months overall, it said operating profits fell 22% to 7.1 billion Swedish krona (£547 million) as net sales lifted by 1%.

As if this weren't enough, M&S must also brace itself for class action data lawsuits after private data, including millions of customers' household information, telephone numbers and dates of birth, was leaked as a result of the attack. The impact financially is staggering. The losses to the British high street stalwart look set to be unprecedented – Bank of America Global Research predicted the losses to equate to £43m per week, and estimated to run to more than £400m in total – acting as a harsh wake-up call for every business to think more about the technology it relies upon. And this is without taking into consideration the reputational damage an incident like this can cause. The PR spin about technology – always on, always working – has made it a business essential. After all, technology never has an off day, it doesn't make mistakes. It doesn't get ill, tired or burnout. It doesn't get distracted from the task at hand by an unscheduled meeting or an unexpected phone call. It completes the task efficiently and accurately, and moves on to the next. Until it doesn't. So how can it go wrong? Stuart Machin, CEO of M&S, described the security breach as the result of 'social engineering' which came about from 'human error' via a 'third party' although this has yet to be confirmed by the company's internal investigation. In other words, we are the weakest link. We open emails, click on links, share passwords, leave laptops on trains… the list goes on. While it is people that operate the technology, there will always be risks, it is unavoidable. As M&S continue to repair, the smart businesses will now be using this incident as a learning exercise. Every business, regardless of size and sector, is a potential target, so what can we learn from this? Are we protected? How would we respond? These are the questions we must ask ourselves. The fact is, when it comes to cyber protection, the work is never done. A constant stream of new threats are defeated by even newer solutions, and protecting your business goes far beyond strong passwords and the latest virus protection. The experts all agree that businesses need multi-layers of protection to secure their systems, combined with insurance. Are you thinking ahead? We're told that M&S had carried out a cyber attack simulation the previous year and could tap into the learnings from this, responding quickly and effectively. Its business continuity plan kicked in, minimising further damage. Yes, cyber insurance is essential, but as many business owners have found, it is costly, complex and limited with what it will deliver. Explore the options carefully and with caution. While we focus on our systems, of course we must also focus on our people. It is our responsibility to equip staff with the knowledge they need to recognise threats and the tactics used by cyberhackers to ensure your business has a culture of security awareness. There is no doubt that technology is our friend, but let's never forget that it can quickly turn to work against us, as well as for us. H&M seeks to lure US shoppers as fast-fashion rivals hike prices due to tariffs
LONDON/STOCKHOLM, June 26 (Reuters) - H&M is trying to win shoppers from rivals in the United States by holding prices steady while Zara and Shein raise theirs, as U.S. tariffs disrupt the fast-fashion industry that relies on imports of low-cost clothes from China, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. H&M CEO Daniel Erver said on Thursday constantly changing tariffs had created turbulence, with the world's second-largest listed fashion retailer planning for multiple scenarios. In an interview, he told Reuters that the challenge in the coming months is "to understand the consumer sentiment, which we see has dropped in the U.S. due to all the turbulence... with the fact that some will be forced to raise prices more, and what (that creates) as an opportunity". "Different competitors are acting in different ways, some more aggressively, some more cautiously," he added. H&M has around 500 stores across the U.S., its second-largest market after Germany in terms of sales, accounting for 13% in 2024. As U.S. tariffs add to costs for retailers, relative price positioning is front of mind for executives, and the timing of price increases is key, with companies watching the competition closely to see who will blink first. For H&M, which is trying to improve its profitability, sticking to current prices for longer carries risks as rising costs eat into margins. But it also provides an opportunity to take market share from rivals. "Maybe they are going to raise prices in the U.S... but just to a lesser extent as compared to competitors," Pareto Securities analyst Alexander Siljestrom said. H&M can also mitigate the tariff impact by shifting production of U.S.-bound clothes from China, which faces the highest tariff rate, to Bangladesh and elsewhere, he said. Across categories including dresses, jeans, and shirts, the average U.S. price at H&M's bigger competitor Zara was up by 28% this month from a year ago, according to data, opens new tab from price tracking firm EDITED, while prices at H&M in the U.S. were on average down 3% year-on-year. Zara prices were up across the board in June compared to January this year, EDITED found, while H&M has kept prices more or less stable, even though its chief financial officer Adam Karlsson said in March that price hikes were likely to offset tariffs. Shein, which sends clothes direct to U.S. shoppers from factories in China, has also had to raise prices and suffered weaker customer growth since Trump ended the "de minimis" duty-free treatment of low-value parcels. As it aims to improve its supply chain and get new styles to stores faster, H&M has spent the last 18 months consolidating its supplier base, Erver said, aiming to order more from a smaller number of big suppliers who also operate factories in multiple countries. "We look at each individual order to decide what's the best sourcing market depending on the craftsmanship, the skills, the pricing situation, but also now more than ever the geopolitical situation with trade barriers," he told Reuters. "That has led us in certain cases to take the decision to move things to different markets." H&M also aims to be below full capacity with all of its suppliers, so it can easily increase production if needed when an item sells well, Erver said. As part of its "nearshoring" strategy of sourcing products from suppliers closer to main consumer hubs, H&M is looking to increase its supplier base in markets like Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco for Europe, Erver said. H&M will also add suppliers in Brazil, where it is opening its first stores in the second half, he added.

Clothing prices rise in US as Trump tariffs kick in, H&M boss says
Clothing prices are beginning to rise in the US as Donald Trump's tariffs on imported goods start to have an effect, according to the boss of H&M, one of the world's biggest fashion retailers. Daniel Ervér, the chief executive of the Swedish retailer, said: 'In the US, we are starting to see some competitors increasing prices. Different competitors are acting in different ways. Some more aggressively and some more cautiously.' He said it was unclear how the market would develop as there was a 'fast-moving situation' on tariffs, as the Trump administration had changed the rules on several occasions. Nevertheless, Ervér said H&M was aiming to be 'very, very competitive' on price, fashionability and sustainability. He said the group's wide range of sourcing locations meant it had 'good flexibility' to mitigate the impact of any tariffs imposed by the US on goods imported from certain countries so that it might have an advantage over some competitors. Despite rising costs on wages, tariffs and other factors, H&M made clear there was pressure to keep prices down as shoppers were keeping a tight rein on their spending amid global turmoil and rising household bills. Ervér said: 'The customer is very price sensitive.' The group, which owns brands including Cos, & Other Stories and Arket as well as its main chain, said it was likely to have to discount more than last year around the world in the coming months as some retailers were already having to cut prices to prompt uncertain shoppers to splash out amid global events. The comments came as H&M revealed that sales had risen just 1%, in local currencies, to 112bn Swedish kroner (£8bn) in the first half of the year as it closed 4% of its stores. Operating profit slid nearly 17% to 5.9bn Swedish kroner.
