Season of madness in the age of terror

Season of madness in the age of terror

Arabian Post03-05-2025

Matein Khalid
He was a handsome young Gen-Z kid from Dubai, son of a Sindhi family long settled in the UAE, only a few years older than my twins. I can just imagine him as a toddler, all decked out in Babyshop diapers, then a little guy having his birthday bash with his classmates at McDonalds or Kidzania, as an IHS student on a school bus in Oud Metha Road. Then a young college graduate, I can imagine his parents' sheer joy when he married his beautiful bride and who would have ever thought that their last picture together would be a testament to a lost youth and a doomed love. He made one fatal mistake that cost him his life and a lifetime of grief for all those who loved him in a life cut short by merciless animals with guns who decided that he and 25 other innocent human beings must die, just because they hated his religion.
Neeraj Udhwani's life was stolen by a cabal of terrorists in an exquisite Kashmir resort town called Pahalgam, his murder, an act of political symbolism in the lethal game of nations by murderers who have broken every shred of decency that defines the human condition. Dr. Lambert, my old prof., used to say 'there is one compelling reason why we should study international politics' – 'this stuff kills'. Neeraj is with God now, as is Dr. Lambert. RIP.
The powerless have always been defined in terms of the powerful in India and Pakistan, two states created amid the bloodlust of one of history's most obscene spasms of violence in August 1947, the summer of Partition. Kashmir was the jewel that both successor states to the British Empire wanted to annex to their tarnished, bloodstained crown in the name of a phony Two Nation Theory. In an ancient land that encompassed a thousand nations, 330 million Gods, religious/cultural syncretism and a society that is a laboratory of human diversity and communal coexistence.

Yet as in 1965, 1971, 1999, 2001, 2008, 2016 and 2019, India and Pakistan are mired in the pantomime of war that will claim countless more lives on both sides just to appease the sacred fury of mindless nationalism. 25 centuries ago great souls like Mahavira and the Gautama Buddha walked the face of the earth and we now live in the age of space travel, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Yet we have not lost the primal urge to kill and murder to sacrifice the young and the innocent in the name of vengeful deities, like the tribe of hereditary stranglers known as thuggis who committed mass murder of strangers on the remote roads of late Mughal India in the name of the Goddess Kali.
Why does this undercurrent of bestial violence disfigure the kaleidoscope of the subcontinent's history? Why was the tryst with destiny so hollow and the freedom at midnight such a cruel illusion if the endgame was to have midnight's grandchildren massacred in terrorist outrages from Peshawar to Colaba, Kashmir to Balochistan, Dhaka to Jaffna?
Modi will launch a retaliatory strike and General Munir, the Luminous One, has every political incentive to climb up the escalatory ladder to whip up the nationalist zealots who legitimize his praetorian regime. Balakot was a close call but sanity prevailed on both sides before either reached the point of no return. Yet who knows if a miss calculation now could lead to a tactical nuclear strike by a Pakistan high command that has never abandoned a first use capability doctrine? Will the ultimate act of terror be a mushroom cloud over a subcontinental battlefield or God forbid an entire city via a nuclear weapon fired in blind anger or primal fear? If this is freedom at midnight, India and Pakistan can have it. May the Gods destroy the miasma of evil that swirls in the netherworld of our ancestral motherlands' pathological power politics. John Lenon was so right in Imagine, all we are saying is, give peace a chance!

Moody's credit downgrade is a macro game changer. What now?

Matein Khalid While I was not surprised by Moody's decision to cut the sovereign credit rating of the US from Aaa to Aa1 since I have done my best to warn my friends in this post about the King Dollar's vulnerable underbelly on debt/deficits, I am surprised that the credit rating agencies is willing to risk the wrath of Trump White House with this move. After all, Trump could well invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to handcuff Moody's entire executive board for an enforced sojourn in Club Fed or even declare or shut down the credit rating agencies for this un-American act of lèse-majesté. However, nothing good will come out of this move for risk assets or the US dollar. US Treasury bond yield will rise, the S&P 500 will tank on Monday and the Republicans now a neo-Maoist personality cult for Tariff Man rather than a pragmatic, rational political party will go ballistic in their political outrage. The timing of this move is Godawful. The S&P 500 Index is up a stellar 20% since Trump did a U-turn on China tariff and the need to sack 'Mr. Loco/loser' Jay Powell from the Federal Reserve. It will also amplify the existing decline in both consumer and business confidence as well as increase credit/liquidity risk premia in the stressed FHA mortgage debt, auto loan, credit receivables, student debt, junk bond and asset backed securities market in an economy that must refinance $9.5 trillion by this winter. The Moody's move will also reinforce the embryonic megatrend towards a strategic asset allocation shift by global investors out of greenback assets, the dominant theme in post-Liberation Day financial markets for moi. See also My bearish King Dollar and black gold trades are money gushers! I did not need Moody's to enlighten me that something was dangerously wrong in a $28 trillion economy with $35 trillion in debt and almost $2 trillion in annual budget deficits that Uncle Sam, the world's monetary emperor, literally wore no clothes. The global sovereign debt market is full of miss priced credit and the US is only the tip of a very dodgy intercontinental iceberg where serious money can be made by the leveraged cognoscenti at the expense of the trusting, patriotic, my country right or wrong loony-tune lambs. Nicolo Machiavelli wrote – 'do not put your trust in the false promises of princes' after a lifetime navigating the murderous politics of Renaissance Florence. As a citizen of a Third World state under military diktat that just received a $1 billion IMF thank you gift from Trump last week for being part of a brilliant people, especially since I got 4-degrees from the same Penn/Wharton, I can only say thank you POTUS, we love ya! Moody's will increase the pressure on money managers to take profits in US equities and corporate bonds. Since Moody's has cast the first stone into the US Treasury bond market, the benchmark for risk in debt, the shockwaves of the credit downgrade will spare not even the most obscure outpost of the global financial village. The only consolation is that unlike the case in August 2001, even Dr. Louis Pangloss would have priced in a skeptical risk premium on the tsunami of Treasury supply in the pipeline, given fiscal voodoonomics in Washington and the ominous drum beat of the trade war. Even though none of this is new to the Wall Street cognoscenti, higher interest rates on Uncle Sam IOUs, possibly a 5% yield on the 10 year US Treasury note, means a bloodbath for global debt markets and a spike in volatility that will shred private bankerji crafted, fiendishly complex structured note, which will be explosive landmines in investor portfolios. Fly, Robin, Fly. Up, up to the sky. See also What next for global risk assets and dollar rates? I expect the mother of all swap trades out of T-bonds into non-dollar, non-paper and safe haven assets as the cost of debt service for the planet's borrowers just went up dramatically. This also means illiquid assets like private credit and real estate could prove leprosy in the months ahead, especially in dollar pegged currencies where devaluation cannot act as a macro shock absorber. It was a little uncharitable for Moody's to stiff Trump with this credit bombshell after he just won $2 trillion in commitments to invest in the US from three Gulf petro states. It would be a national disaster if Qatar yanked the yummy $400 million gold plated Boeing 747 that Trump desperately needs as his post-retirement aerial Presidential Library to jet across the world. Young man, there's no need to feel down. I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground Matti trade du jour? Short greenback, bear steepners in Bondland, short crazy val US equities, short Tesla (TSLA) since you are nothing but a hound dog since DOGE only cut the flab by $150 billion and not the $2 trillion Elon promised Planet MAGA. Short Mag-7, short real estate, short private credit, long gold, long crypto, long sterling, long EM. Also published on Medium. Notice an issue? Thriller in Geneva and Trump in Kashmir!

Matein Khalid The smoke signals from Geneva came even faster than the one in the Vatican that announced the arrival of Pope Leo XIV on the world stage. If the US-China trade marathon was a Bollywood movie, Scott Bessant would be dancing wet and wild with the Chinese Vice Premier Lifeng in their Jet d'Eau or kowtowing on those little abraas that criss-cross the Rhône river since it is too hot to throw lovey-dovey snowballs at each other in the ski resort of Crans Montana. The decline in the Swiss franc and Japanese yen in the depths of the Dubai night confirmed to me that Trump and Beijing were both telling the truth. A trade deal of sorts had been inked in Switzerland even if the world does not know its details yet. The spectacular Trump brokered ceasefire in the Four Day War in the skies above the subcontinent and POTUS-47's brilliant offer to mediate the '1000 year old Kashmir' conflict means a certain Nobel Peace Prize for Donny T even if Ukraine, Gaza and Iran fall apart. It also means, it was right for me to go full throttle on succession of risk on trades led by tripling existing positions in Meta, Blackstone, Raytheon and the Aussie dollar, the prime beneficiary of a new trade modus vivendi and PBOC monetary stimulus/fiscal lollipops. The world will not escape unscathed from the worst trade war since Smoot Hawley tariffs almost 100 years ago. Global investors have been liberated from untold billions in value since Liberation Day. The world's ports have been devastated by the slump in container shipping and the Black Death in disrupted factories and supply chains. The Western network of alliances, constructed from the rubble of Nazi occupied Europe and the death rattle of imperial Japan's greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere (Tojo's Asian EU) has been gutted by the nationalist venom of MAGA's economic high priests. King Dollar had lost its invincible aura and is now on the run against Auric and hopefully now Dr. Copper since I am also mesmerized by the tangible value I see in FCX. See also America's shining city on the hill has stopped shining Earnings growth is no longer a given and Ford, Mattel et al have even given up the very idea of full year earnings guidance. Since my macro metrics warn me on recession risk, I will also go long the US Treasury note duration tracker TLT as a cheap hedge at 4.38%. A tactical short on gold is also logical since the yellow metal is overbought and the risk on Euphoria due to the Geneva spirit is all too real. Only one discordant note on this Green Monday Mubarak. Why is Modi so sullen and silent in his Gujju bunker? Now that he has been so decisively upstaged by Trump and proven a blatant liar by French/US intel on the spectacular air war waged by the PAF against the Rafale/Sukhoi/Armadas he had so lovingly assembled from Srinagar to Pathankot, Bathinda to Halwara? I was abused by his trolls since I knew that the pilots of the PAF were maestros of air combat and even the chest beating jingos of the Indian media, led by Awful Arnab, the Bingo with the Lingo, has been forced to acknowledge that Akhund Bharat now appears to the world as Absurd Bharat. Not to worry, Trump's olive branch will overcome the miasma of hate that pollutes the very air in India and Pakistan. I at least have done my little bit to foster peace between our two great nations as I fell in love with and married not only an Indian woman but a direct descendant of Emperor Shah Jahan. I expect a money making carnival tonight in New York with 3-4% rise in the S&P 500 and a 4-6% rise in Nasdaq. Gold should fall at least $120 an ounce and the King Dollar should kick some serious derriere against the yen and, above all, the Swissie. Even the Eurovision contest had to be moved from Zurich to Basel so that fans could stay in cheap hotels/Airbnbs across the Rhine in France or the Fatherland. I would love to hear about some of your fave European equities ideas as I want to move beyond my golden oldies BNP, Shell, SAP, Heineken, Siemens, the Poland tracker, Leonardo and BAE Systems. I would not touch Dassault with a barge pole since I bet Modi will order his bankers to short the hell out of the guys who sold him aero-junk like Rafale, quelle horreur yaar!!! Steak, ketchup and Arabic coffee: what Donald Trump eats on trips abroad

US President Donald Trump is preparing for the first official visit abroad of his second term, during which he will visit the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Travelling to another country can wreak havoc on an eating schedule, so how does Mr Trump handle meals on foreign visits? Mr Trump has spoken several times of his love of American fast food. Expounding on the wonders of McDonald's in a 2016 CNN interview, he called the restaurant's offerings 'great stuff'. The President is also a big fan of steak and was the face of his own meat brand for several years through 'Trump Steaks'. He reportedly enjoys his steaks well done and prefers to eat them with ketchup. For dessert, Mr Trump has been known to enjoy pie, chocolate cake and ice cream. To wash it all down, the President is apparently a big fan of Diet Coke. According to the Wall Street Journal, during his first term, he used a call button on his desk in the Oval Office that would alert an aide to bring him a can. The button was reportedly reinstalled when he returned to office this year. But what happens when he travels abroad? In 2017, during his first term, his first official visit overseas was to Saudi Arabia. On arrival, he was treated to traditional Arabic coffee alongside King Salman, who taught him how to shake his cup − the traditional technique of asking a server to stop pouring. Mr Trump, however, asked for a top-up after finishing his first cup. Mr Trump's Saudi hosts later pulled out all the culinary stops, offering the President's favourite steak with a side of ketchup alongside the more traditional chicken kabsa and gorsan − Saudi stew. Caviar, foie gras, risotto and date ice cream were also on the menu. The US President headed to Israel after Saudi Arabia, where he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At a dinner at the Prime Minister's residence, Mr Trump was treated to an American-themed spread, with celebrity Israeli chef Moshe Segev serving up sliders with rice and kale chips, as well as ketchup made from beets and aioli mustard. Salmon, red curry and a sprout salad were also served during the meal, with an array of desserts arriving on a plate featuring the silhouettes of Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu. Similar to food in the US, cuisine in the Middle East is based on one thing Mr Trump loves − meat. But what happens when no meat is on the menu? During his trip to India in 2020, Mr Trump dined with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is a vegetarian, several times. A White House aide famously disclosed to CNN that they had never seen the President eat a vegetable. According to the Hindustan Times, Mr Trump turned down sampling the vegetarian menu on his first day in India, and even declined apple pie and ice cream for dessert. Meat was on the menu at a later state dinner, but it's unclear what − if anything − Mr Trump sampled. As he begins what is sure to be a series of visits overseas at the start of his second term, it remains to be seen whether Mr Trump will stick with old favourites or branch out to new experiences at the dinner table.
