Airdrie announce Ben Wilson exit as striker joins The New Saints for club record fee

Striker Ben Wilson has completed a move from Airdrieonians to The New Saints in a club record fee for the Welsh side.
The 23-year-old striker has joined the side the Diamonds defeated in the 2024 SPFL Trust Trophy final for an undisclosed fee, although it is understood to be worth six figures to Airdrie.
Wilson made a big impression when he arrived in Monklands last summer, netting a hat-trick on his competitive debut in a thumping 8-0 win over East Kilbride in the Premier sports League Cup. He also netted in each of his first four games for the club.
But the former Cliftonville man has now completed a switch to the Welsh Premier side, who unveiled the striker with an announcement video this afternoon.
A club statement from Airdrie read: "Following a successful season in the Championship, striker Ben Wilson has moved to Welsh side TNS for an undisclosed fee.
"Northern Irish frontman Wilson notched 17 goals in his solitary season at the Albert Bartlett Stadium, finishing as the side's top scorer following his move from Cliftonville last June."The 23-year-old's exploits caught the eye of Cymru Premier champions TNS, who were keen to add to their firepower ahead of another European campaign."We wish Ben the best of luck as he begins a new chapter in his career, and we thank him for some big moments in the season past."

The 48-year-old has joined Matt Sherratt's new-look backroom team for this summer's two-Test tour of Japan on secondment from Harlequins. Wilson is well acquainted with Welsh rugby having previously coached Wales U20s, the Dragons, Scarlets and Cardiff. The Welsh Rugby Union are currently searching for a new head coach after Warren Gatland's departure midway through the Six Nations, with Scotland defence coach Steve Tandy among the contenders. Wilson has been heavily linked with a permanent coaching role in Wales but the Harlequins boss poured cold water on such suggestions. He has worked with Sherratt previously when he was head coach of Cardiff but the tables have turned, with the Harlequins boss now working underneath his friend. "I was really excited to get the opportunity, Quins were brilliant to allow me to do it," said Wilson. Article continues below "It falls right in my break in terms of finishing with Harlequins and reviews. "It would be a pre-season break for me and us as a group. When I finish this project I get off a flight and back into work at Harlequins. "I first worked with Matt at Bristol and then having seen how good he was I was desperate to bring him to Cardiff. "Then we had a pretty good time together and then we went our separate ways into different projects after a pleasing end by winning a bit of silverware together with Cardiff. "We work well together and dovetail a fair amount, but we are responsible for different areas. I'm very respectful of who is in the head coaching role. "He was very supportive of me in our period together at Cardiff, and likewise with me now. "He's picked up some great experience here and put in some great foundations in a short space of time during the Six Nations." The Welsh rugby landscape has changed significantly since Wilson left Cardiff in 2018, with the men's national side having lost a record 17 Test matches on the bounce. The future of the four professional clubs is also up in the air, with the WRU considering cutting one if not two teams. But Wilson is adamant there is enough talent in Wales to drag themselves out of the hole they find themselves in. "I think of the 100-cappers that have left Wales or retired from international rugby," he said. "We've had the same at Harlequins that we've lost some key players for a number of reasons last year. "We made a commitment to a three-year project and this year we've blooded some youngsters. "You take a little bit of pain on the way but by blooding those youngsters and giving them the experiences that they need. "But you blood those youngsters, bring them through and give them the opportunities, I think you'll see the fruits of that long term. "I know at Harlequins we'll be better for doing that this year and other projects similar. "At Cardiff when we won some silverware, the Tomos Williams' and Jarrod Evans' who played in that final were young kids who we brought through the year before. "They took a bit of pain but that pain came to fruition in the future. "I think it's the same here at the moment. "A number of experienced 100-cap players have left. "What you want in an ideal system is a conveyor belt where the next group are ready and that's I think the project is at the moment is to get more of that group ready to not just play international Test match rugby but to win. "That's the key - it's to win. "I think that's partly what's happening at the moment." Wilson also believes the job of coaching Wales is an exciting one despite recent troubles. "I think there's an exciting project future-wise for whoever will come into that role as head coach," he said. "There's an amazing facility here and platform to build from. "There's an hour and 10 minutes from the Dragons to the Scarlets. "That's a huge advantage and I think using that advantage in Wales and bringing four regions together and aligning as much as possible has got to be the project for the future. Shane Sutton departs Newtown to join hometown Robins
KNIGHTON Town Football Club has completed the marquee signing of Shane Sutton. The 36 year old joins the Ardal North East League club from JD Cymru North club Newtown. Sutton departs Latham Park as one of the club's modern era legends having played a key role in the golden era under the helm of Chris Hughes which saw the Robins regularly qualify for Europe. Sutton enjoyed several spells at Newtown with stints at Presteigne St Andrews and AFC Telford United following his release by Shrewsbury Town in 2007. Sutton will remain a Robin though with Knighton Town known as the Radnor Robins. Knighton Town boss Harry Stokes said: "We're all happy to have Shane on board to help me and the other coaches out, he's been on the club committee for a few years now and has spent some free time helping us out on the coaching side of things. "Shane is also running some junior training camps this summer for the young kids of Knighton. "With Shane's family commitments and work commitments he may not be available all the time which is why this move makes sense for him." Sutton becomes the latest exit from Newtown with fellow defender Dominic Smith also departing this week for JD Cymru Premier club Caernarfon Town and follows Dylan Downs, Calvin Smith, Desean Martin, Zeli Ismael, Jason Oswell, George Hughes and Aaron Williams out of the door.

New Ewro2025 Schools Resource Launched Ahead of Cymru's EURO Debut

The Ewro2025 classroom resource is a free, bilingual resource launched by British Council Wales in collaboration with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and with support from the Welsh Government. Designed for learners aged nine to 13, the resource connects football to the classroom using the excitement of Team Cymru's journey to Switzerland as a springboard to explore themes like identity, gender equality, teamwork, language learning and European culture. Shared to schools across Wales, the UK and Europe, the resource places sport at the heart of learning – encouraging pupils to see themselves as part of a wider European story, full of shared values, diverse cultures, and boundless possibilities. Developed with educators and input from the FAW, the pack includes interactive lessons that explore the forgotten history of women's football in Wales — which was banned from 1922 to 1970 — and celebrates how far the game has come. Pupils can explore football-specific vocabulary, discover European languages spoken at the tournament, and reflect on gender representation and the legacy of this summer's tournament. I hope this resource inspires young people – especially girls – to be proud of who they are, to dream big, and to see how language, sport and culture can open up the world.' Ruth Cocks, Director of British Council Wales, added: 'This resource brings language, culture and sport together in a way that truly connects with young people. It's about sparking curiosity, building confidence, and inspiring pride – whether pupils are discovering a new language, engaging with football for the first time, or reflecting on their place in the world and what they could go on to achieve in the future. 'As Cymru prepares to take on the Netherlands, France and England this July, our resource invites students to be part of the journey – whether in the classroom or at home. It reflects the values at the heart of Welsh identity: inclusion, equality, fair play, and a warm croeso to all. We hope it inspires excitement and a sense of belonging as the nation celebrates this historic moment.' Minister for Culture and Sport, Jack Sargeant, said: 'This educational resource, funded through the Welsh Government's Euro 2025 Partner Support Fund, provides an opportunity to create lasting change across Wales and to celebrate a historic moment for Welsh sport. By connecting Cymru's Women's historic UEFA WEURO debut with classroom learning, we're encouraging young people to explore language, culture and gender equality as well as inspiring the next generation of footballers. 'As Cymru takes to the pitch in Switzerland, we're ensuring the impact of this achievement extends far beyond the tournament. To support teachers in using the resource and to further engage schools in the excitement of the tournament, British Council Wales will host a series of webinars – including a dedicated teacher session on Thursday, 26 June. A Football Association of Wales spokesperson said: 'The FAW is very proud to collaborate with the British Council on the powerful Ewro2025 schools resource. This project is a brilliant example of how combining football and education can inspire learning, connect cultures, and empower young people. 'Alongside the resource, the FAW is distributing School Engagement Supporter Packs to every school in Wales. These are designed to help pupils feel truly part of Cymru's UEFA Women's EURO 2025 journey, build excitement in classrooms and playgrounds, whilst encouraging the next generation of supporters and players. '200 schools will also have the opportunity to apply for School Equipment Packs, supporting the long-term development of girls' football. Together with the British Council, we're committed to ensuring the impact of this historic moment reaches far beyond the tournament, leaving a meaningful legacy and inspiring more young people to get involved in the game.'
