5 zombie movies like 28 Years Later

Digital Trends4 hours ago

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's new film, 28 Years Later, brought their iconic zombie franchise back to the spotlight. Centering on a new group of survivors long after the Rage virus that has devastated the United Kingdom, 28 Years Later sets up a sprawling and exhilarating tale of action and horror that will surely heighten people's appetite for good zombie movies.
Thankfully, fans of the film can treat themselves to several similar zombie movies that have been released over the years. Given how popular the zombie subgenre has become, it can be a challenge for one to narrow down their viewing choices when there are so many options available. However, those who loved 28 Years Later should now have these five films at the top of their watchlist.
Recommended Videos
REC (2007)
This Spanish horror film follows a reporter and her camera operator when they are quarantined inside a building where a virus is spreading, turning those inside into zombies. Similar to 28 Years Later and its shaky iPhone camerawork, REC presents its story with 'found footage' taken by one of the characters, making for an immersive and heart-pounding viewing experience. Though Boyle and Garland's new film is far less claustrophobic than REC, the latter also seems to incorporate a supernatural element into its terrifying depiction of the zombie apocalypse.
REC is available to stream on Tubi, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
Overlord (2018)
This zombie movie begins with a group of U.S. soldiers who end up fighting for their lives in a dangerous land already ravaged by war: Nazi-occupied France. There, they discover the Third Reich conducting human experiments on villagers, turning them into savage members of the undead. Both Overlord and 28 Years Later feature a healthy dose of over-the-top gore and action to satisfy hardcore zombie fans, all while presenting the horrors of war and violence carried out by humans and zombies alike.
Overlord is available to stream on Tubi, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
I Am Legend (2007)
Loosely based on Richard Matheson's classic novel, I Am Legend centers around a scientist seeking to find a cure for a virus that has wiped out most of humanity and mutated the survivors into vampiric cannibals. Please note that the film's alternate ending, which was replaced with the one seen in theaters, is widely regarded as the canonical, superior conclusion. Like 28 Years Later and its predecessors, this modern adaptation of I Am Legend explores grief, loss, and humanity's potential for evil, with some characters appearing to act even worse than the zombies, making for an especially dark and thought-provoking narrative.
I Am Legend is available to stream on Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Army of the Dead follows a team of former mercenaries who try to rob a casino in Las Vegas years after a zombie plague has ravaged the city. Like 28 Years Later, director Zack Snyder's action-packed zombie film follows its heroes as they leave the comfort of their homes to explore a zombie-infested land. It also features different breeds of zombies, including the slow-walking shamblers and the quick, intelligent Alphas, adding different levels of terror and action to the story. Snyder's film even mirrors the fantasy-inspired aesthetic of 28 Years Later, with the Alpha zombie, Zeus, ruling over his undead army in the ruins of Las Vegas like a medieval king.
Army of the Dead is available to stream on Netflix.
28 Days Later (2002)
This is a fairly obvious choice, but fans of 28 Years Later should catch up on the film that started Boyle and Garland's whole horror franchise. Led by actor Cillian Murphy decades before Oppenheimer, 28 Days Later follows a man who wakes up from a coma in a post-apocalyptic London, where he is forced to survive against hordes of infected zombies and radical human survivors. 28 Days Later is known for popularizing super-fast zombies with the frenetic, frightening visuals replicated in the threequel. While 28 Years Later takes place long after the initial zombie outbreak, the original film also explores how people try to rebuild and maintain society while blurring the line that separates humans from the infected.
28 Days Later is available to stream on Pluto TV, Fandango at Home, Google Play, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video.

Prince William celebrates birthday with puppy photo

A photo of the Prince of Wales with another generation - this time of puppies - has been posted on social media by Kensington Palace to mark his 43rd birthday. The picture, taken by the Princess of Wales, shows Prince William with their family's Cocker spaniel, Orla, and three of her four recently-arrived puppies. The message for Prince William was signed online "with love", with the initials of Catherine and their children, George, Charlotte, Louis, and "the puppies", plus a paw print emoji. The picture was taken in Windsor earlier this month. There was also a message online for Prince William from the official account of the Royal Family, saying "Happy Birthday to The Prince of Wales!", plus some celebratory emojis. An accompanying picture, of the prince sitting on a stone wall, was taken while he visited farmers and food producers on the Duchy of Cornwall - a parcel of land William now owns - in May. Orla was given to the royal couple by Catherine's brother, James Middleton, in 2020, shortly after the death of their previous dog Lupo. The dog - seen walking behind William in the picture - gave birth to four puppies in May. Spaniels are well known for their affectionate behaviour and the picture shows the puppies clambering around the prince. In the puppy picture, the prince looks relaxed in a pair of jeans and trainers - an informal moment after recent showcase occasions, including Trooping the Colour and the Order of the Garter procession. He also visited a project linked to his Earthshot environmental prize which creates a type of sustainable dye that can reduce the fashion industry's use of harmful chemicals - so colours can really be green. Catherine did not appear at Royal Ascot earlier this week, with royal aides saying she had to find a balance in how she returned to public events. In January, the princess revealed she was in remission after her cancer diagnosis last year. On Friday, she sent out a message about her support for children's hospices - saying they helped families who were "heartbroken, fearful of the future and often desperately isolated". And now her photo has marked her husband's birthday. While Prince William was born in mid-summer on the longest day of the year, his father King Charles has been praising those in Antarctica experiencing the shortest day of the year. He recorded a special message for the BBC's Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast, which sends a morale-raising message to scientists working in remote research stations in the depths of their winter. The King praised the work of researchers tracking climate change. Princess of Wales pulls out of Royal Ascot appearance Prince and Princess of Wales share new photos for Father's Day

JoJo Siwa Says She Felt Pressured into Coming Out as a Lesbian: 'I Kind of Boxed Myself in'

JoJo Siwa is reflecting on her coming out experience "I kind of boxed myself in," she told the Daily Mail's YOU Magazine in a new interview Siwa is currently dating Chris Hughes, who she met while starring on Celebrity Big Brother Siwa is opening up about her coming out experience. In a new interview with the Daily Mail's YOU Magazine, the Dance Moms alum reflected on previously feeling pressured to come out as a lesbian. "When I came out at 17, I said: 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care [about gender].' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure," Siwa, 22, told the publication. She noted that she felt the pressure came "in a weird way" from "inside the [LGBTQ] community at times." "From people I know, from partners I've had," said Siwa. "You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian', you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid." In 2021, Siwa came out as LGBTQ, but during her appearance on CBB earlier this year, where met now-boyfriend Chris Hughes, she reflected on her sexuality again. "I feel, like, so queer, do you know what I mean?" she told Danny Beard, her costar and a RuPaul's Drag Race UK alum. Added Siwa: "I've always told myself I'm a lesbian, and I think being here I've realized: 'Oh, I'm not a lesbian, I'm queer.' And I think that's really cool." She added that she was "switching letters," referring to the letters in LGBTQ. "I've dropped the L and I've gone to the Q baby! That's what I love about sexuality," said Siwa, to which Beard, 33, responded: "You are Q, honey. And you know that British people love a queue!" is now available in the Apple App Store! Following the end of CBB, Siwa and her then-partner Kath Ebbs, who identifies as non-binary, broke up. One month later, Siwa and Hughes, 32, showcased their friendship, posting snaps from a getaway in Mexico, along with a photo of them cuddling together. On June 2, Siwa confirmed that she and Hughes were dating in an interview with The Guardian. "It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way," the "Karma" singer told the outlet.
