DBacks' Jordan Montgomery said he wasn't recovering after games or sessions and imaging revealed damage that required surgery.
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, another disastrous turn of events for the veteran starting pitcher.
Montgomery said he had not been bouncing back from his outings well this spring and went for an MRI expecting to learn he had a minor issue in his elbow. Instead, he needs the second elbow reconstruction of his career. He also underwent the procedure in 2018.
Montgomery will miss the entire season and likely a chunk of the 2026 season.
This comes on the heels of a miserable 2024 season in which Montgomery posted a 6.23 ERA in 117 innings and lost his spot in the starting rotation.
'Kind of like a roller coaster,' Montgomery said of his past 12 months. 'But I'm a believer, and I believe that everything happens for a reason and that my life is made for the good of me.'
The Diamondbacks agreed to a deal with Montgomery just days before the start of the regular season last year. The contract paid him a guaranteed $25 million for 2024 and included a player option for 2025. Montgomery exercised that option after the season and is in line to make $22.5 million this year.
'I was probably just trying to throw too hard too soon,' he said. 'I was throwing bullpens really hard, and then get in a game and tense up trying to make the perfect pitch. That's never good for your arm. I was throwing some pretty good stuff. It was there.'
Montgomery was set to open the year in a relief role after right-hander Brandon Pfaadt was named the fifth starter over the weekend.
Still, the injury is a blow to the Diamondbacks' rotation depth — and it dashes any hopes they had of recouping value from the contract.
Montgomery said Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery next week.
'Meister's great,' Montgomery said. 'He's done a lot of guys' second TJs and there's people out there with three. Hopefully this is my last one and I can have a fresh arm and get a couple of more years.'
