Shubman Gill, India's new Test captain, aims to secure their first Test series win in England since 2007, inspired by Virat Kohli's proactive leadership.
India Test skipper Shubman Gill has said that he learned a lot from the 'proactive' leadership of Virat Kohli and would look to imbibe those values when he leads India out against England for a gruelling five-match Test series starting June 20 in Leeds, in what will be his first assignment as Test captain.
A transitional India will search for their maiden Test series win in England since 2007, and the first game is scheduled to take place at Leeds on June 20.
With Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from Tests, the captaincy spot was wide open and with Kohli too following the former, Gill now has a big responsibility of not just leading but also handling the team.
'When I played under Virat, I think his proactiveness in Tests with the field or with the ideas or with his thinking was something that I liked and that I picked up. If he thinks that, okay, this plan is not working, he would immediately have another plan, communicate to the bowler what he wants from them," Gill said while speaking to Sky Sports.
'They just want me to be able to express myself as a leader. I mean, that's what they have told me, there are no expectations. They are not expecting me to, you know, do something that I'm not capable of," Gill said.
'But you have some kind of expectations from yourself as a leader and as a player. So those are the expectations that I have from myself," Gill added.
The star Indian batter revealed that he hid all the leadership talk even from his father, his biggest source of support in his career.
'I don't even think he (father) dreamt of me being the Indian Test captain, like even myself as well. All I remember when I was young, all my dreams were to play for India and win matches," Gill said.
'So yeah, he called me when the news broke out, I think a couple of days before. But I knew sometime before (the news flashed), but I didn't tell him because I wanted to tell him when it's official," Gill added.

Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir told to drop Jasprit Bumrah from IND vs ENG 1st Test; ‘You've got to be very strategic'

After Sourav Ganguly, former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg urged the Indian team management to use Jasprit Bumrah 'strategically' during the upcoming five-match Test series against England, keeping his workload management in mind. There has been a lot of chatter recently regarding ho to use Bumrah against England. The recent chatter comes after the Indian premier pacer suffered a back injury in the fifth and final Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year and sit out of action for close to two months. In fact, he also missed India's triumphant Champions Trophy campaign. With just four days to go before the first Test in Headingly, Hogg want Bumrah to play definitely at Edgbaston (second Test) and Lord's (third Test) and miss the first game if needed. "You've got to be very strategic with those three Test matches," Hogg told RevSportz. 'Where are you going to get the most benefit out of him? Because he can turn the game, he can turn the series on its head. So you want to make sure that you play him at Lord's, definitely, and probably Warwickshire (Edgbaston).' 'And I don't know where you'd play him in the other three Test matches, but you want to make sure you play him in those crucial games. I probably wouldn't even play him in the first Test match, actually,' added the chinaman who played seven Tests, 123 ODIs and 15 T20Is for Australia, before urging India to play some mind games with England. "I'd just go, 'Right, England, we don't have Bumrah.' And you could just see England thinking, 'Oh, they don't have Bumrah – that's good, we don't have to face him.' But then they're going to start worrying about him in the second Test match. And if he turns the tide in the second match, then all of a sudden England are playing catch-up. So I'd add a bit of by-play there," stated Hogg. With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from the longest format of the game recently, Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are two of the most senior players in the side. The England Test series also starts a new era under new captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Although Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar have made it clear that there is no expectations from Gill, the 25-year-old will certainly be under some kind of pressure, leading his country at the top level for the first time in his career. Previously, Gill had captained India against Zimbabwe in a T20I series back in 2024.

UTT 6: U Mumba TT Clinch Maiden UTT Title With Commanding Win Over Jaipur Patriots

U Mumba TT etched their name into the history books, clinching their maiden Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) title with a dominant 8-4 win over Jaipur Patriots in the Season 6 grand finale on Sunday, thanks to a stellar team performance. Wins for Lilian Bardet and Bernadette Szocs gave U Mumba an early lead, before Szocs and Akash Pal swept the mixed doubles 3-0 to take them to the brink. Teenager Abhinandh PB sealed the title with a clutch game win in the fourth match. Although Yashaswini Ghorpade didn't feature in the final, her standout semi-final display epitomised U Mumba's collective strength this season - hallmarks of a campaign expertly managed from the dugout by coaches John Murphy and Jay Modak. For their performances in the final, Akash and Szocs were named the Indian and Foreign Player of the Final, respectively, while Jeet Chandra claimed the Shot of the Final. Bardet set the tone for U Mumba with a gritty comeback against Kanak Jha in the opening rubber, turning a one-game deficit into a 2-1 win. That momentum carried into a marquee clash between the league's top-ranked player, Szocs and India's highest-ranked paddler on the international circuit, Sreeja Akula. Szocs showcased elite defence and composure under pressure to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory, handing Sreeja her first loss of the season. Szocs returned alongside Akash to dominate the mixed doubles, cruising past Jeet and Britt Eerland in straight games. With each game increasingly one-sided, the U Mumba duo went from 5-5 to 11-5 in the second game and closed out the third with the same scoreline. With the tie on the line, Jeet kept Jaipur Patriots alive with a composed start in Match 4, winning the first two games against U Mumba's Abhinandh. But the 17-year-old U Mumba paddler held his nerve in a tense third game; locked at 6-6, Abhinandh surged ahead 10-8 before sealing it 11-8, clinching U Mumba TT's first-ever UTT title with an 8-4 overall win. Dempo Goa Challengers' skipper Harmeet Desai and U Mumba TT captain Bernadette Szocs were named the Male and Female MVPs of UTT Season 6, respectively, for their standout performances, while the Shot of the League went to Adriana Diaz for her stunning winner against Krittwika Sinha Roy in Kolkata ThunderBlades' league stage tie against Goa. The final was graced by several dignitaries and distinguished guests, including UTT co-promoters Vita Dani and Niraj Bajaj. Also in attendance were TTFI Secretary General Kamlesh Mehta and Arjuna awardee Monalisa Mehta, along with ITTF Group CEO Steve Dainton and ITTF Foundation Director Leandro Olvech. IndianOil was represented by senior officials, including Sanjib Behera and Ashok Jain. The evening also saw participation from Rakesh Khanna, Sameer Koticha, and Kiran Bir Sethi, with each guest playing a ceremonial role in honouring the season's standout performers.

VVS Laxman's role in intra-squad game clarified as Gambhir's absence sparks coaching rumours: 'Target is to win in ENG'

The presence of former India cricketer VVS Laxman, who is officially associated with the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, in the intra-squad game in Kent on Saturday amid the absence of head coach Gautam Gambhir, who returned to India the same day owing to personal reasons, sparked various speculations. One of them pertained to whether he was filling the role of Gambhir until his return. Not to forget, Laxman was reportedly the first choice for the BCCI officials as Rahul Dravid's successor for the head coach role. Laxman has extensive experience playing in England. Donning the Indian white, he has been on three tours of the country—2002, 2007, and 2011—scoring 586 runs in 19 innings, including five fifties. He has also played 23 other first-class matches in England—16 for Lancashire across the 2007 and 2009 County editions and seven others were tour games for India. Hence, Laxman, who has been filled in as a temporary replacement for the coaching role over the last two years, would be an excellent choice as Gambhir's replacement. But a Cricbuzz report said he is not in England for that role. While he may be spotted at the intra-squad game and could even have a word with the support staff members, his role was "nothing more." It added that he is likely to leave England soon. "He has gone there for some other purpose, not on any assignment with the Indian team. He travelled to London from Lausanne," a BCCI source told Cricbuzz. Another source added, "The target is to win in England, and he may have spoken to the coaches and selectors present here, and perhaps even attended the intra-squad game. But he holds no official role with this team." Yet another source said, "He went to Switzerland and simply stopped by in London to spend time with the boys. It was always part of his plan." It has been learnt that Laxman went to Switzerland for a conference. The intra-squad game ended on Monday, implying it was merely of three days of action in Kent, where Shardul Thakur and Sarfaraz Khan scored their respective centuries. The five-match contest will begin on June 20 in Leeds. The Indian players will have a day off on June 16, before they leave for Headingley on Tuesday.
