Telangana student with fake education certificates deported from US, arrested
A 28-year-old student from Telangana's Nalgonda was apprehended at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) after being deported from the United States.
Based on his alleged admission to the immigration officials that he had used forged documents to secure a US visa, the managing director of an education consultancy firm in the city was arrested later.
The accused student, Pakeeru Gopal Reddy, was arrested on June 1 by the RGIA police.
According to the FIR, due to poor academic performance, Reddy had fraudulently obtained fake academic degree certificates through Dhanalaxmi Overseas Consultancy, located in B N Reddy Nagar, Hyderabad.
Based on his alleged confession, original passport, travel documents, and the forged degree certificates, the police arrested Katoju Ashok, 29, of Sri Dhanalakshmi Overseas Private Limited on Monday, June 2.
According to police, Reddy travelled to the US for a two-year master's programme at Webster University, Missouri, about 17 months ago and returned to Hyderabad after a year.
'He completed one year of the course and came back and overstayed here for five months. When he returned to the US, the immigration officials checked the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System), and it was found to be inactive. They deported him,' V Sreekanth Goud, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shamshabad division, told indianexpress.com.
According to the police, Reddy used fake degree certificates from Madurai Kamaraj University to get a US visa.
The immigration officials at the airport said that he allegedly confessed to using fraudulently obtained documents to travel to the US.
'We arrested Ashok and seized 150 forged mark statements, provisional certificates, and recommendation letters of Madurai Kamaraj University and Osmania University, Rs 10 lakh cash, etc. He has confessed to sending 15 students to the US in the last five years by charging around Rs 1 lakh,' a police officer said.

IMFL prices to rise up to 85% as Maharashtra cabinet approves excise hike; rate on country liquor increased to Rs 205
The Maharashtra state cabinet has approved an excise tax revision, significantly increasing the price of ordinary whisky and rum by Rs 90-100 per quarter bottle, while premium IMFL brands will see a smaller increase of Rs 30-40. M UMBAI: The minimum price of Rs 115 for a quarter bottle (180ml) of ordinary whisky or rum will rise by Rs 90-100 with the state cabinet approving a revision in excise taxes Tuesday. While it is a rise of 78-85% for ordinary Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), the hit on the pocket is softer for premium IMFL brands, which will cost Rs 30-40 more that the minimum price of Rs 330 today for a quarter, or a rise of 9-12%. Besides a 14% excise increase for country liquor, the cabinet also approved a rise in the licence fees for permit rooms. Manufacture of a new grain-based foreign liquor, to be called Maharashtra-made liquor (MML), was also approved. The state govt, which has been looking for ways to increase its revenue to fund schemes and election promises like the Rs 1,500 per month Ladki Bahin dole for women, hopes to mop up an additional Rs 14,000 crore with the excise hike. The meeting that cleared the proposals was chaired by CM Fadnavis. A secretary-level study group had been formed to increase the revenue of the excise department. This group studied the best practices and policies in other states and submitted its recommendations and reports to the govt.

Rs 2cr in cash and jewellery stolen from north Kolkata flat as family sleeps; thieves ate almonds during heist, went for almirah with jewellery'
KOLKATA: Burglars broke into a five-bedroom apartment in a building on Ultadanga Main Road close to Hudco crossing early on Monday and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 crore. The family members, who were asleep during the break-in, told police they suspected insider involvement as the burglars were aware where the jewellery was kept and did not touch costly electronic items lying around. The apartment is owned by 62-year-old businessman Sushil Kumar Bajaj, whose son, Shubham, told police that the accused entered the first-floor apartment through a window in the prayer room after cutting and removing the iron grille. With the keys dangling in the almirah, the accused had no problem accessing the gold and diamond jewellery kept inside. Cops said a wedding had taken place at the house more than a year ago and the family members had not returned the jewellery to the bank locker. The break-in was discovered around 6.15 am when Shubham's mother noticed the window grille in the prayer room was missing. Besides Rs 2 lakh in cash, jewellery that were stolen included a gold set of necklace, earrings and bangles weighing 80-100 grams and valued at Rs 70 lakh. Among several other jewellery pieces missing were diamond-studded bangles worth Rs 5 lakh, five pairs of diamond-studded gold earrings worth Rs 5 lakh, 10 gold chains valued at Rs 15 lakh, a gold bracelet worth Rs 1.5 lakh and several gold and diamond rings worth at least Rs 15 lakh. 'These weren't just valuable items, they included family heirlooms,' said a family member. Shubham said he suspected an insider could be involved. 'They did not touch the electronic items that lay scattered around our flat. They knew where the almirah with the ornaments was and even ventured into the kitchen and ate some almonds,' he said. 'Our life's savings have been stolen. My father has serious heart ailments, and my mother is diabetic. We need to keep cash with us for sudden hospitalisations. Last month, too, my father spent days at a hospital in Alipore. I remain busy with my job. I married a few months ago and these were very much all we had as our savings,' he added. Police are examining footage from CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood and have deployed a forensic team to collect evidence from the crime scene, an investigating officer said. An FIR under BNS 305 (theft in a dwelling house) has been lodged at Ultadanga police station. The detective department is also helping with the probe. This incident has raised concerns about security in the Ultadanga area. Residents of neighbouring buildings expressed concern at the daring theft that took place despite the presence of family members in the house. Security has been tightened in the surrounding areas and cops have urged residents to enhance their security measures and install surveillance cameras.
