Palmer pulls strings as Chelsea crush Real Betis 4-1 to win Conference League, complete historic sweep of all Uefa trophies
WROCLAW, May 29 — Chelsea roared back to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final in Wroclaw on Wednesday, becoming the first club to complete a clean sweep of European trophies.
Manuel Pellegrini's enterprising Betis caught the favourites cold with an early goal from Abde Ezzalzouli against a flat-footed and listless Chelsea.
But Enzo Maresca's second-half substitutions injected energy and Cole Palmer changed the complexion of the game in a five-minute spell, setting up Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson to score.
Substitute Jadon Sancho made the game safe in the 83rd minute as the Spanish side faded in their first European final and Moises Caicedo added gloss to the scoreline.
Chelsea are the first club to win the full set of five UEFA club tournaments — the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup and the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup.
They have also won their first silverware since Todd Boehly's consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022, following an era of unprecedented success for the club.
Boehly was on the pitch at the end, savouring the win that seemed unlikely when Betis were in control in the first half.
Chelsea have ended the season with a flourish after also securing a place in next season's Champions League following a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
Maresca, in his first season at Stamford Bridge, said he hoped Conference League glory would be a launchpad for the club.
'The club have invested lots of money in the last three or four years, so they are also waiting for results,' Maresca told TNT Sports.
'Hopefully this can be a starting point and from tonight, from this season, (we are) building something important.'
The Spanish side went ahead in the ninth minute through Ezzalzouli, who scored the goal against Fiorentina that took his side to the final.
Malo Gusto lost the ball and it broke to Betis captain Isco, who produced a clever pass to find Ezzalzouli on the edge of the box, with the Moroccan drilling a left-footed shot across Filip Jorgensen.
Minutes later Marc Bartra tried his luck from distance but this time Jorgensen was equal to the task, producing a flying save.
Urged on by their massed ranks of fans, Betis went close again when Johnny Cardoso's shot from inside the box was deflected behind.
The Premier League side were enjoying the bulk of possession but struggling to create meaningful chances, with Betis defending well and Isco, a five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, pulling the strings.

Maresca brought on James for the struggling Gusto at the break and the English side looked livelier.
Pellegrini was forced a change when goalscorer Ezzalzouli was forced off, with Jesus Rodriguez coming on to replace him.
Maresca also made a number of other changes, including bringing on Sancho, but it took two moments of magic from Palmer to turn the tide.
The England man produced a pinpoint inswinging cross from the right that found onrushing Argentina midfielder Fernandez, who got between two defenders to head the ball past Adrian in the 65th minute.
Suddenly Chelsea's tails were up and the fans behind the goal were in full voice.
Five minutes later Palmer twisted and turned before producing another superb cross that Jackson bundled into the net.
Jackson should have scored a second goal but a heavy touch allowed the Betis goalkeeper to gather.
But Sancho made it 3-1 when he combined with fellow substitute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and finished from an angle and Caicedo added a fourth from the edge of the box.
Victory for Chelsea breaks an astonishing cycle of wins for Spanish teams.
Taking into account World Cups, European Championships, Champions League and the UEFA Cup/Europa League, of the previous 27 men's finals involving Spanish teams, all 27 had had Spanish winners.
Four Spanish club sides had been defeated in that time, but in all cases by fellow La Liga sides.
Earlier, the centre of Wroclaw was packed with fans from both clubs, with green-and-white clad Betis fans outnumbering their English rivals.
Poland's Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said police made 28 arrests after supporters clashed in the city's market square. — AFP

The EU's climate commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, confirmed plans to present an EU climate target for 2040 on July 2, during a meeting with EU countries' representatives on Wednesday, diplomats familiar with the closed-door talks told Reuters. The proposal will set an EU goal to cut net greenhouse gas emissions 90% by 2040, compared with 1990 levels, the diplomats said. However, the EU executive plans to add flexibilities to that target, which could reduce what it demands from domestic industries. The flexibilities include setting an emissions-cutting target for domestic industries that is lower than 90% and letting countries buy international carbon credits to make up the rest, to reach 90%, the diplomats said. A European Commission spokesman declined to comment on the plans. The commission has promised not to weaken Europe's ambitious climate aims, despite mounting criticism from governments and lawmakers concerned about the cost for European businesses, which are struggling with high energy prices and looming US tariffs. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent. The commission has delayed its 2040 climate proposal for months, and has weakened other green laws in recent months to try to calm the political pushback. EU countries are split over the 2040 goal, which they and EU lawmakers must approve. Finland, the Netherlands and Denmark are among those backing a 90% emissions cut. Opponents include Italy and the Czech Republic. Germany has backed a 90% target if countries can use international carbon credits to meet three percentage points of the goal. The commission is also considering softening requirements for countries to cut emissions in specific sectors – giving them more choice over which industries do the heavy lifting to meet the goal, the diplomats said. The 2040 goal will aim to keep EU countries on track between their 2030 emissions target – which they are nearly on track to meet – and the EU's aim to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Sabalenka powers into French Open fourth round

(AP pic) PARIS : World number one Aryna Sabalenka's French Open quest continued as she powered into the fourth round with a 6-2 6-3 victory against Serbia's Olga Danilovic on Friday. The Belarusian dominated her opponent from the start and although she faced some brief resistance in the second set, she easily set up a meeting with 16th seed Amanda Anisimova of the United States. 'I am super happy with the win, Olga is a fighter and I knew it would be a fight. She played like a top 10 player; pretty soon she will be in the top 10,' said Sabalenka. Sabalenka started in ruthless fashion, racing to a 5-0 lead but Danilovic avoided the bagel by winning the sixth game on serve, going on to pull a break back. The resurgence was shortlived, however, as Sabalenka wrapped up the opening set with another break of serve. Danilovic put up a decent fight in the second set but there was no comeback on the cards as Sabalenka broke for 5-3. The three-time Grand Slam champion wrapped it up with an unreturnable serve on a half-empty Court Philippe Chatrier – a common occurrence on early matches at the French Open.

Norris shrugs off gremlins with record lap for Monaco pole

(AP pic) MONACO : Lando Norris shrugged off his gremlins and revived his world championship bid on Saturday when he became the fastest driver in the history of the Monaco Grand Prix to claim pole position for Sunday's classic race. Driving with impeccable judgement, pace and purpose, the 25-year-old Briton clocked a best lap in one minute and 9.954 seconds to outpace local hero and last year's winner Charles Leclerc of Ferrari by 0.109. It was the first time any driver had lapped the sinuous barrier-lined Mediterranean street circuit in less than 70 seconds and came only seconds after Leclerc had appeared to have secured his fourth Monaco pole position. For Norris it was his first Monaco pole, his second this year and the 11th of his career – and a critical advantage for the slowest and shortest circuit of the season where only 10 drivers have won from lower than third on the grid since 1950. While a disappointed Leclerc lamented traffic that hampered his first flying run, affecting his overall rhythm, Norris was buoyant after ending a dismal run in qualifying and falling 13 points behind McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in the drivers' title race. 'The team has done a fantastic job so thank you to everyone here and back at the factory,' he said. 'These days don't come easy and I am proud to give something back to them. 'It's been a long time coming. I feel good and I don't think you realise how good this feels with quite a few struggles over the last couple of months, especially here in Monaco. It's a beautiful place and the hardest track probably to do it. 'Up against the home-town hero (Leclerc), I'm very proud of the whole team so I am pleased after all the hard work in the last few months.' Norris's McLaren team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri was third ahead of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari. Hamilton though was later hit with a three-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen. As a result Red Bull's four-time champion moved up a place to fourth, with remarkable rookie Isack Hadjar of RB and Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin on the third row, ahead of Hamilton. Norris agreed that his mentality had been a key part of his success after admitting to self-doubts in recent weeks. 'Honestly, that's the tricky part and to consistently find a lap time because you know it's what the others are going to be doing and improving more and more. 'You've got to take a similar amount of risks, but when you get to Q3, the final lap is just about who can risk a little bit more and commit a little bit more. 'It was a nice and well put together lap and it feels very good when you cross the line and you know it's all paid off.' He said he had not considered the mandatory two pit-stops strategy required on Sunday. 'Honestly, at the minute, I have no idea. I'm going to enjoy today and I've worked hard for today. I'm happy with qualifying and I'm going to live the moment a little bit and then I will focus on tomorrow.' Team-mate Piastri, who leads him by 13 points after seven of this year's 24 races, admitted he had endured a messy two days of practice and qualifying. 'I think I've hit more walls this weekend than I have in my whole career so it's been untidy. I've been struggling to get into the groove a little bit and I think in qualifying I was much happier with things and I felt pretty good. 'We've been doing some digging this weekend and to come out with this result is a decent effort.' He added: 'We're in good positions, but it's still going to be an exciting race tomorrow with the two-stop so let's see what happens.' Last year's winner and local hero Leclerc said: 'I'm just frustrated. We know we don't have the car for wins this year.'
