British royal family lead VE Day commemorations from Buckingham Palace balcony
Buckingham Palace's famous balcony hosted the British royal family's VE Day commemorations 80 years after King George VI first marked the Second World War's end from the same spot.
The historic moment saw thousands flock to The Mall in 1945 and the scenes were repeated on Monday as crowds gathered to greet Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla and watch an RAF flypast after an armed forces parade through London.

Members of the monarchy sat with veterans as the current crop of servicemen and women, including Nato allies, marched past in recognition of those who served to defeat Hitler's Nazi regime and bring peace to Europe.
Later Charles stepped on to the balcony with Camilla and was joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, to acknowledge the cheers of well-wishers and watch the aerial display led by a Second World War-era Lancaster bomber.
Charles' naval No.1 dress uniform reflected the outfit worn by his grandfather George VI on VE Day – May 8th, 1945 – who with the Queen Mother made eight balcony appearances to satisfy boisterous crowds at the palace gates.

Planes roared overhead during the aerial display and William chatted to son George, while Louis was seen moving his head from side to side apparently trying to get a better sight of the planes.

Louis, who recently celebrated his seventh birthday, seems to revel in these public moments and pulled a face of awe as the RAF aircraft flew overhead.
At one point the Waleses, except Charlotte, leaned to the left as the planes, featuring workhorses like a C-17 Globemaster alongside Typhoon FGR4 fighters, flew down The Mall, with the Red Arrows providing the finale.

The space between economy and first class was hastily converted into an operating bay. Curtains were drawn, medical kits opened, and the lounge area sterilized. 'I was on the X Factor - nothing was real and the judges were actors'
The X Factor has been a staple of British television since it launched in 2004, and now a former contestant has spoken out on what really goes on behind the scenes of the show The X Factor has been on our screens for many years, showcasing fresh talent every year. For many Brits, it's a yearly tradition - that one show we can all get behind when it returns. But one former contestant has now broken his silence, and what he says about the show might just make you see it in a different way. Wagner, who became a wildcard favourite back in 2010, didn't quite make the final - but he still managed to leave his mark until he was booted out of the quarter final. That season saw Matt Cardle crowned as the winner and One Direction launching into stardom. ''The judges are actors', he claimed. 'It was a reality TV show but nothing is real... Everything is planned in advance and my contact with Louis was just for cameras.' He also went on to reveal his vocal coach felt more of a mentor than his mentor Louis. During his time on the show, critics launched an internet campaign for him to win the show, just as a way to 'p*ss off Simon'. But his journey came to an end, when he was voted out in sixth place after a sing off with Mary Byrne. He went on to say that his vocal coach felt more like a mentor than Louis Walsh and he's not even convinced the judges even picked the songs. 'I'm sure the producers would pick the songs for us,' he said And the critique is allegedly just as scripted. Wagner claimed producers would ask the vocal coaches for feedback and then hand it over to the judges to deliver on air. 'They would look at the camera, but every now and then they would look away and read the script. Some would look more than others!' he said He also suggested the panel - once made up of Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh - slowly changed into "anyone can be a judge". 'The script was to make sure the entertainment would keep going because they couldn't rely on the judges to be witty or quick thinking.' At the time, Simon claimed an the attempt to derail the show had failed. 'There were people out there trying to derail this show, we've put this show back in the hands of the public.' But Wagner says otherwise 'It's not democracy, it's showbusiness', he said. 'They knew that they wanted to promote One Direction and everybody else were just extras in the play.' He claimed that on the day he was sent home, a merchandising staff member told him he'd sold out of his official merchandise and had been leading the vote; however there is no suggestion the votes were rigged. Wagner also revealed that Louis faked interactions between the pair. In every episode, Louis kept mispronouncing his name, saying it like Wag-nah rather than the correct Vawg-ner. 'It was a joke that Louis agreed with me!" Wagner explained. "He said 'I'm gonna call you Wagner all the time and you're gonna say Louis, my name is Vawg-ner'". He said: 'That was fun and it was Louis' idea. It was smart.' However despite his claims, it is clear The X Factor helped to launch household names like Little Mix, Olly Murs and Alexandra Burke. But over the years, stories emerged about the show's darker side - with some former stars alleging scenes were staged to boost ratings. Despite missing out on the top spot, Wagner made the most of his fame - raking in cash from personalised video messages for fans. 'From the videos I would get £100,000 a year', he said. But when the money started to dry up, he switched careers - trying his hand at running a hair transplant in Brazil. It wasn't for him, and he eventually returned to the UK to launch his band - Kings with Wings: The Wagner Rock Band - a name inspired by his love of birdwatching. 'I got lots of bookings', he said, 'but I felt so awkward singing She Bangs, because my God, that is a stupid song but people love it.' Meghan Markle's awkward joke to Kate met with 'yawning silence' at huge event
In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry recalled how his sister-in-law the Princess of Wales asked his new wife Meghan Markle what she thought of her first Trooping the Colour in 2018 - and it seems the response was awkward It's just days before one of the biggest events in the royal calendar - Trooping the Colour. It sees all the royals out in force for the annual Sovereign's Birthday Parade followed by them Firm appearing on the Buckingham Palace balcony. In recent years, spots on the balcony for the RAF flypast have been reserved for working members of the monarchy only - however, this wasn't always the case. And before quitting as working royals and carving out a new life in the United States, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were regulars at the major event. Meghan's first appearance was in 2018, just weeks after she tied the knot with Prince Harry in a fairytale ceremony in Windsor Castle. But in Harry's controversial memoir, Spare, it was revealed Meghan tried to crack a joke with her sister-in-law Kate, but it led to a "yawning silence". At that year's event, Meghan looked stunning in a baby pink dress and matching hat, standing proudly next to her new husband who was dressed in his military uniform. And while Meghan was seen chatting with Kate, William and Camilla, Harry claims things were far more awkward behind-the-scenes. Harry claims that once they stepped back inside, Kate asked Meghan what she thought of her first Trooping the Colour and she replied: "Colourful". Harry writes: "A yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole". The Sussexes attended Trooping the Colour the following year, but since that they've not been on the balcony with the rest of the royals. And it seems Meghan has another important event to go to on the same day of Trooping this year. It has been revealed she will speak as the guest of honour at a museum's Night of Wonder in the US, as part of her work championing community wellbeing. Meghan will be joined by other high-profile guests at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, as the space is transformed into an enchanted nocturnal garden. The event will feature live music and installations representing local ecosystems and the LA landscape, and guests will be treated to a farm-to-table dinner that uses ingredients from the museum's nature gardens. The duchess's mission to advance community wellbeing and uplift young women "dovetails with the museums' approach to connecting community and science by fostering meaningful educational experiences that empower young minds", the Office of Prince Harry and Meghan said. Among the programmes shared on the website of their charity, the Archewell Foundation, is The Welcome Project, where Meghan focuses on addressing "the social isolation recently resettled women experience around the world and building more inclusive and connected communities". NHMLAC's president and director Lori Bettison-Varga said: "We are proud to honour Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, a native Angeleno, whose work to advance community wellbeing and expand opportunity, especially for underserved communities, aligns with our equity-focused approach to developing science literacy for the next generation, including through our Stem and Steam Pathways programmes."
