Hong Kong's former top sprinter takes on the new king in Sunday's Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) on Champions Day
Lucky Sweynesse's owners are hoping a year of patience will pay off in Sunday's Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) at Sha Tin.
Owned by the Cheng family, Manfred Man Ka-leung's sprinter has been off the track since winning the Group Two Sprint Cup (1,200m) at Sha Tin in April 2024, where he beat subsequent Chairman's Sprint Prize winner Invincible Sage.
Lucky Sweynesse himself won the 2023 Chairman's Sprint Prize in a record-equalling campaign in 2022-23, where he matched Beauty Generation's record of eight Hong Kong wins in a season.
This year's warm favourite Ka Ying Rising is also aiming for an eighth win of a remarkable campaign, something Lucky Sweynesse's connections will be hoping they can play spoiler on Sunday.

Patience has been key for owner Cheng Ming-leung and they will hope to be rewarded when their four-time Group One winner returns from left fore fetlock surgery.
'As a racehorse owner, patience is the key and we always have high hopes for our horse,' said Cheng. 'Though he had to be sidelined for a long period, he recovered well and all along his situation was very stable, and we kept the faith that he will return one day.
'I am excited to see him make a comeback on FWD Champions Day, the same meeting when he scored in the same race two years ago.
'Having said that, I didn't rush my trainer but full credit to Man – he and his stable team has done a great job to turn things around. The horse is fully recovered now and is ready for the challenge.'
Lucky Sweynesse is not there to just make up the numbers, with Cheng buoyed by recent blistering trials.
'His performances in his recent trials were very impressive,' Cheng added. 'It looks the horse has a good heart and we are all delighted to see him coming back to his best.
'We always have high hopes for him and hopefully he will have a forward showing this time. I have confidence that he will finish in the frame.'

Hong Kong hails ‘overwhelming support' for legalising basketball betting, proposes 50% levy on profits
The Hong Kong government has hailed 'overwhelming support' from scholars, athletes, and youth groups for its plan to legalise basketball betting in the city, following the conclusion of a one-month public consultation last month. Ninety-four per cent of the 1,063 submissions received by the government between April and May 'expressed support or positive views' on the proposal to regulate basketball betting under the Betting Duty Ordinance, according to a paper submitted by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau to the Legislative Council on Thursday. Those who supported the legal amendment said public demand for basketball betting has 'increased significantly,' and a regulatory regime can protect bettors' rights and interests. The government proposed in April to amend the ordinance to grant the Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs the power to issue a basketball betting license to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). The regulatory regime will mirror the existing one for football betting, the government said. In the paper released on Thursday, the government proposed imposing a 50 per cent levy on the net profits from basketball betting. Citing responses from supporters of the legislative proposal, the government said the HKJC may donate its additional revenue to welfare and charitable purposes. The tax revenue generated may also help the government allocate more resources on social welfare, supporters said, according to the government. Financial Secretary Paul Chan first unveiled the government's intention to regulate basketball betting during his 2025 budget speech in February. He said the legalisation could tackle illegal gambling and raise tax revenue amid the city's estimated deficit of HK$87.2 billion. The finance chief projected that regulating basketball betting could generate HK$1.5 billion to HK$2 billion in tax revenue. The government acknowledged on Thursday that 36 submissions – or 3.4 per cent of the responses collected – opposed the proposal. Those who objected raised concerns about the adverse impact of basketball betting on the youth, adding illegal gambling still existed after football betting was legalised. Responding to the concerns, the government said in the paper that the impact of betting activities on young people has been 'steady' in recent years. The proportion of bettors aged between 18 and 21 also 'consistently remained below two per cent,' the government said quoting the HKJC. Some suggested the government to prohibit individuals aged between 18 and 25 from placing bets online, while others proposed imposing restrictions on the amount and number of bets that can be placed by young people. The paper submitted on Thursday is set to be discussed by lawmakers on the Legislative Council's Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports on Monday. 'Disastrous move' In February, the Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights criticised the government's plan to regulate basketball betting, saying that giving a green light to basketball betting was a 'disastrous move.' The group said popularising sports betting could 'lure' young people to bet with their limited financial resources that should otherwise go to other needs. Gambling loss may also result in psychological pressure and guilt, which may deter individuals from seeking help, it said, warning that gamblers could enter a 'vicious cycle' where they turn to lending agencies or engage in criminal activities.

Tom Marquand up for the fight as Dubai Honour aims to halt Voyage Bubble's bid for history
The 27-year-old is hoping to break his Group One duck in Hong Kong on the four-time top-level scorer Tom Marquand has huge respect for Triple Crown-seeking Voyage Bubble but thinks Dubai Honour has the right credentials to give the United Kingdom back-to-back wins in Sunday's Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) at Sha Tin. Marquand and Dubai Honour are yet to win a top-level prize back home but the pair come alive when sent abroad, winning three Group Ones in Sydney and another in France. 'With his racing style and the way he's matured – and the way he can switch off during his races – the mile and a half has just become perfect for him. 'That said, you can't forget a horse like Voyage Bubble – he's a horse who performs at a high level all the time and class can stretch a horse through. It would be very naive to think that the distance alone will get him beat. 'Being involved in these types of races is a lot of fun, I – and Dubai Honour, too – have been lucky to clash against some proper champions. It's not quite as fun when you're not winning them, but it's still an enjoyable thing having a horse that's up for the challenge to take on these types of races. 'Dubai Honour and Voyage Bubble are the talking horses and the ones to beat based on the level of form they bring and the consistency. 'You can never forget a Hong Kong Derby winner like Cap Ferrat but I just think the fact these boys can boast top-level form on multiple occasions is what sets them apart and makes them such an attractive match-up.'

Frankie Lor leans on Zac Purton again as Savvy Twinkle looks to break his duck at Happy Valley

The Capitalist gelding is yet to win in five career starts, but posted his best effort yet when second to the in-form Super Sixty at the track and distance of Wednesday night's race last month. Savvy Twinkle was rousted early by Alexis Badel and snaked his way to the rail to lead after 300m, before only being collared in the final 100m after a game rally. That experience will stand him in great stead and despite facing a wide draw in barrier nine, Lor is confident of a big run from the four-year-old. Super Sixty rallies up the inside! The son of Sebring Sun – known as Acappella Nova pre-import – was beaten on debut in Australia but won his subsequent two starts, scoring over 1,200m at Eagle Farm and 1,350m at Doomben. The Red Hare ran well to finish third in a recent barrier trial at the Valley, racing greenly but always under a tight hold. And Lor is hoping for a big run from him on his local debut, though the draw in stall nine could have again been kinder. 'He's a little bit nervous in the mornings but when he starts cantering he's very quiet,' said Lor. 'He needs to learn a bit more but when I've trialled him, he's been good. 'I think he's OK off a rating of 67, but the draw is a bit unfortunate because stall nine is a bit wider than I'd want. 'I have put the earmuffs on him because he's a bit nervous and I think that will help him. He's got a good chance if overcoming his draw.' Lor has bounced back from a slow start to the campaign, which saw him go winless in the first month of the season until Master Trillion broke the drought on October 6. With 42 winners, he sits just two behind third-placed Ricky Yiu Poon-fai and is not too far off the pace overall, with 14 separating him from title leader John Size.
